We envision an institute that would focus on the following three areas:

1. Common Core Module writing

a. We will learn from senior teacher consultants who are our leaders in the New York State National Writing Project Literacy Design Collaborative. Institute attendees will learn how to design modules based on Common Core Standards, with the goal of having a module to take back to their classrooms. For East teachers, we will connect these modules to the UbD Unit Planning document used at their school.

2. Research and publishing

a. One of the writing pieces in the Summer Institute will focus on research and/or professional piece designed for an authentic audience. We will support this project in the SI and help fellows take their work public either through a publication or a presentation to their peers.

3. Collaborative writing project

a. Writing project teachers are unique in their perspective on teaching and learning, specifically the teaching and learning of writing. What makes us unique? How does participating in the National Writing Project transform us? For this project, we will examine ourselves and our teaching and write a collaborative piece that we would submit for publication to a journal like Research in the Teaching of English or English Journal or make public in a digital space.

Given our current plans, please respond to the following prompts in a brief informal piece of writing:

1. What have you done to cope with the Common Core in your classroom?

2. Describe how you hope to be transformed through participating in the GVWP summer institute?

3. What research interests do you have in the teaching and learning of writing? How might you use the summer institute to expand on these interests?
