There has been a great deal in the news about the lack of vaccinations in Canada – the way I would view this is to evaluate how countries who are ahead of Canada in vaccination rates received their vaccines and determine why were are in the position we are in. ?Vaccine Manufacturing?I reviewed from the financial statements of the pharmaceutical companies who have a COVID-19 vaccine approved in at least one country; ??Pfizer-BioNTech, ?Moderna, ?Johnson and Johnson, ?AstraSeneca, ?Novovax, ?CanSinoBIO (China), ?Sputnik V (Russia).? ?I also reviewed the contract manufacturers of COVID -19 Vaccines who have announced they are manufacturing the vaccine for one of the above pharmaceutical companies.? ? As I expected, most vaccine manufacturing occurs in India, the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and China/Russia.?Results – how did the countries who are ahead of Canada receive their vaccines??The results are that the only countries which are ahead of Canada in vaccination rates are;?Countries with domestic vaccine manufacturing (United Kingdom, United States, Switzerland- labeled in Yellow colour font in the chart below)?Countries with vaccine manufacturing OR are apart of the European Union (where there are many countries which have domestic vaccine manufacturing facilities – labeled in Red colour font in the chart below) ?Countries that are a part of the Schengen passport-free zone in Europe where countries can travel freely without border restrictions (labeled in Purple font in the chart below).?Countries which bought the vaccine from China – labeled in Blue font in the chart below)? The only other countries ahead of Canada are ? Maldives and Barbados (who received vaccines from India as a part of their Friendly Neighbour vaccine distribution program) and ?Israel – who sold themselves to vaccine producers as a good test case for vaccine distribution and paid higher amounts to get the vaccines first.?Below is the chart from the March 3rd edition of the New York Times with the countries colour coded as above;Vaccinations by countryDoses administered per 100 peopleTotalPct. of populationPct. of populationVaccinatedFully VaccinatedWorld3.5267,157,770Israel93.68,315,28854.20%39.40%Seychelles82.880,13157.80%25.00%U.A.E.63.36,094,956––U.K.32.121,322,71730.80%1.30%Maldives24123,665––United States23.778,631,60115.60%7.90%Serbia21.51,501,91713.90%7.60%Chile19.53,660,30819.20%0.40%Bahrain19.3302,67119.30%–Malta16.981,88310.90%6.00%Barbados13.538,61513.50%–Turkey119,073,6408.70%2.40%Morocco113,951,32510.20%0.80%Denmark11635,4007.80%3.20%Hungary10.41,011,4057.80%2.60%Iceland9.633,8356.00%3.60%Switzerland9.5805,2026.40%3.00%Norway9.4497,3746.30%3.10%Singapore9.3525,0395.60%3.70%Lithuania9.1254,0466.50%2.60%Ireland9435,8956.10%2.90%Greece8.9957,1395.80%3.20%Poland8.93,383,4265.80%3.10%Estonia8.8116,2766.10%2.70%Portugal8.6885,1096.00%2.60%Finland8.5466,5387.00%1.50%Slovenia8.4174,4936.00%2.50%Slovakia8.4458,1085.80%2.60%Spain8.43,908,7345.70%2.70%Romania81,565,0214.90%3.20%Germany86,604,5785.30%2.70%Sweden7.9801,1785.20%2.70%Austria7.6670,208––Italy7.64,577,2575.20%2.40%Belgium7.2824,2674.50%2.80%France74,675,8874.50%2.40%Liechtenstein6.92,597––Czech Republic6.6702,0234.30%2.30%Luxembourg6.439,1214.60%1.90%Cyprus6.476,1764.50%1.90%Monaco6.22,400––Netherlands5.7990,389––Canada5.42,018,2384.00%1.50%Croatia5.2213,0683.70%1.50%Qatar5140,000––Kuwait4.2175,0003.30%0.90%Brazil4.28,841,0273.20%1.00%Mainland China3.852,520,000––Bulgaria3.5243,7722.90%0.60%Latvia3.466,2442.50%0.90%Andorra3.32,5263.30%–Costa Rica3149,8122.10%0.90%Azerbaijan3293,3603.00%–Panama2.7114,529––Russia2.73,900,0001.50%1.20%Saudi Arabia2.6885,411––Sri Lanka2.6553,821––Argentina2.51,126,1081.90%0.70%Bangladesh2.13,341,5052.10%–Mexico22,583,4351.60%0.50%Jordan1.5150,000––Nepal1.4402,264––Oman1.467,6601.00%0.40%India1.215,620,7491.00%0.20%Indonesia1.13,023,3480.70%0.40%Peru0.9291,2640.90%–San Marino0.82750.80%–Uruguay0.827,630––Lebanon0.745,859––Albania0.514,295––Colombia0.3169,6190.30%–Mauritius0.33,8430.30%–El Salvador0.216,0000.20%–Dominican Rep.0.226,4000.20%–Ecuador0.242,1140.20%<0.1%Montenegro0.21,5310.20%–Guyana0.21,8520.20%–Senegal0.235,2990.20%–Belarus0.220,9440.20%–Myanmar0.2103,1420.20%–Algeria0.275,000––South Korea0.287,4280.20%–Australia0.241,9070.20%–Mongolia0.24,926––Cambodia0.124,3310.10%–South Africa0.170,5270.10%0.10%Kazakhstan0.122,2940.10%<0.1%Bolivia0.110,167––Malaysia0.125,2520.10%–Pakistan<0.172,882<0.1%–Trinidad and Tobago<0.1440<0.1%–New Zealand<0.11,500<0.1%–Honduras<0.12,684<0.1%–Japan<0.134,772<0.1%–Ukraine<0.16,888<0.1%–Paraguay<0.11,000<0.1%–Guatemala<0.12,427––Iran<0.110,000<0.1%–Egypt<0.11,315––Venezuela<0.1157<0.1%–Thailand<0.1319––Note: Some countries do not provide data for the number of people who have been partially or fully vaccinated.Summary ?If you do not live in a place with;??domestic vaccine manufacturing or in a ?political union (European Union) or passport free area (Schengen passport-free zone in Europe) that has domestic vaccine manufacturing or?are willing to buy the vaccine from China?then you have to wait for the vaccines – BUT as my colour coded chart shows – Canada has vaccinated more people (up to March 3rd - chart is sourced from the New York Times on March 3rd) than any other nation except 3 (Israel, Maldives and the Barbados for reasons noted above) that does not have domestic vaccine manufacturing or is willing to buy from China.? ?I wanted to share this with you as I myself questioned why we were behind in vaccinations verses the rest of the World and these were my conclusions.I hope you are well.Stay safe, we will get through this.Don ................
