I AM SECOND

I AM SECOND

Purpose-

“I am Second is a movement meant to inspire people of all kinds to live for God and for others. Actors. Athletes. Musicians. Business leaders. Your next-door neighbor. People like you. The authentic stories on provide insight into dealing with typical struggles of everyday living. These are stories that give hope to the lonely and the hurting, help from destructive lifestyles, and inspiration to the unfulfilled. You’ll discover people who’ve tried to go it alone and have failed. Find the hope, peace, and fulfillment they found [In Christ].” -

Through prayer and listening to God I have composed this 10 week session curriculum based on the dynamic personal testimonials of . My hope is to bring a fresh look at our faith through studying real life examples from celebrities that have given their lives for Christ and made their lives second to Him. By the end of this study, the students should have a better understanding of how to have a personal relationship with Christ not just on Sunday school hour or in our church building or around their parents, but that same hunger and faith integrated into their daily lives such as school, home, with friends, and in their personal lives where they think they are all alone.

What I like about this curriculum is that it has a snow ball effect. As we progress through the curriculum it is building -gathering momentum toward becoming active high-energy disciples. The role of I am Second slowly starts to leak into living their lives rather than just being an identity. I cannot wait to see this play out in their lives, and I am truly whole-heartedly excited about the ending lesson 10 seeing the outcome of this 10-week-challenge.

I AM SECOND

Lesson 1 - Letting God take control of my life. -Pride

Opening Game-

2 possible ideas:

Hook up the Xbox 360 play the kinect racing game while the crew is finishing eating. Play a tournament style of the fast play.

Minute to win it: Have a 60 second count down On the PC () Get 2 or 3 people; before the game tape the floor three times to create 3 individual tracks. Grab 3 hollow plastic eggs and pieces of cardboard. In sixty seconds without touching the egg they have to race their egg through the track as fast as they, when they reach the other side they must return. Keep going with this process as fast as you can and as many times as you can. The winner will be the one who completes the most total circuits.

HOOK-

Show the opening of Disney’s Cars, where Lightning McQueen races, but for himself.

Q/A:

• What mistake did he make? –didn’t rely on the pit stop/ wanted to win the race all on him.

• What was his biggest flaw? –pride /self-centered ego.

LESSON-

Explain for a bit the new theme and present the clip

Show the trevor-bayne clip.

Read: “One was a crash. I had an H2 hummer that I flipped into head on traffic. Three cars hit it in the roof. It took the top of the steering wheel off and the top of the seat off. I shouldn’t be sitting here, but he gave me another chance to open my eyes. Yet I still didn’t see it, I didn’t see the miracle that had happened.  What ended up happening was, He let me slip away from the thing that mattered most to me at that time, which was racing. I was saying, “I got this, I got this.” So He kind of pulled the rug out from under me.  I had been racing 42 weekends out of the year, 3 times a week, and I was supposed to be racing Nationwide the next year, big time, it was going to be the best year of my life and I ended up sitting still on the sidelines for 6 months because we didn’t have sponsorship. At that point I was like, “Okay, I understand exactly what is going on here; God was in control the whole time and I tried to take control and pushed Him aside.”

• Does anyone feel like they sometimes they get so caught up with what they are doing in their lives that they feel like they ‘tried to take control, and pushed Him aside’? Explain.

• “I want you guys to get in your small groups and work on some verses were we can see what the bible says about putting God first in our lives.”

REFLECTION-

Divide small group into three teams and explain that they have some verses to read in each group. Have the group discuss what they get from the verse and find ways to find not just what the verses mean, but ways to apply their verses into their daily lives. Have each group come up with a joined meaning for their bible verses, and at least three examples of ways to bring it into their daily lives.

Team 1- will read:

2 Corinthians 12:9

Psalm 3:1-8

Team 2- will read:

Proverbs 16:9

Proverbs 1:33

Proverbs 3:5

Team 3 – will read:

Isaiah 48:17

Psalm 32:8

When the groups are finished reading group the whole group back together in a circle, and have each team explain their verses (they don’t have to read them out loud) and present their ideas on how to live out their faith.

Lesson 2- Romans 12:2 “Shifting”

Opening Game:

Hypocrite game- Get everyone into a line. Tell them that they are all going to be both working as a team AND against one another. The rules are this: that everyone is in the line; one person comes up and does a random act like bouncing a basket ball. The second person in line comes up and asks, “What are you doing?” The person bouncing the basket ball answers back something completely opposite and hard (to try to throw off their opponent) from what he/she is doing. The first person leaves the ‘stage’ and returns to the back of the line. The second person has to then try to act out what the first said they were doing. And the game continues….the element of the group working together is that like the ‘wave’ they try to attempt this as fast as possible. They will be timed; at the end challenge them to go faster after you tell them their time.

HOOK-

Personal testimonial from my life in art and how I was living for myself and living in the world of art, partying, rich and not living for God, then going to church youth group and playing the pastor’s kid/ teaching the preschool Sunday school teacher at Bethel, but not living the life as I should. Tell then how that I got sick, and my faithful walk to the stop sign. Talk about how I was a total hypocrite until the lord stepped back into my life and transformed me from the inside out with the saying: freedom is in the refining not the Defining. And by starting to take my faith seriously and living for Christ started to change moving away from the world and moving to what Christ wanted for my life.

“The man that we are about to watch, felt similar to me; he was not living for God, but found himself on the fast track to life. Wally had all the money, pleasure, and fame in this world but found that without God it was worthless…let’s check it out.”

LESSON-

Watch the clip from Wally

REFLECTION-

Our verse today is from Romans 12:2- “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Go over the verse with the students and walk through its meaning. When the students understand it a bit and “talk-it-out” in conversation type format. Explain the craft.

Before the lesson there will be poster Board and old magazines gathered up. Each group MS & HS will be working on or two poster board(s). Write out the verse in Marker in the center of the board. Then both you and your group work together to find all the symbols of what could categorize as “the way/pattern of this world”. We will be making a collogue; so cut out the things and glue them all around the verse. After the project talk about why they chose the things they did and open to discussion how these things can distract or take them away from Christ. Feel free to ask them to identify their own struggles with what they find themselves desiring or being apart of that might make them Christian hypocrites // How they can overcome these obstacles (Test and approve of what God’s will is).

TOOK-

Gather all together in a circle and put the poster in the center. Have the group pray for their fellow student’s from to overcome their struggles together. Leader end praying that God can come into their lives and transform them with His will.

*At the end take the collogues and hang them up on the wall down stairs in the main area.

I AM SECOND

Lesson 3- I am second –no matter what

Opening Game:

???’s Only: Split the group into two teams and line the teams so that the two first people in the line are facing against each other. Now the ref is in the middle of the two, and the score keeper is facing the ref. The game is that the Ref will tell them that they are at a location or theme (make it only about football, or money oriented) and the two have to hold a conversation about said topic only, they can only ask questions. They must answer their opponent’s question with another question and maintain the storyline without breaking it, taking too long, or repeating the question. When there is a break the score keeper will give the person a point for their team that remains in the competition.

HOOK-

Let’s talk about Bradie-James, who played for the Dallas Cowboys. Bradie-James is a lot like the average football player. He makes 8,754,840 in salary, with a yearly extra signing bonus of 8,000,000[i]. Like most who make it the NFL, he was the best player in his High School team, and by his freshman year in college at LSU, he made, James had 41 tackles, three sacks, and one interception. The following year, he recorded 110 tackles and five sacks and was named to the second team All-SEC team. James was also was named the Defensive MVP of the 2000 Peach Bowl.[ii] By the time he did make it into the pro’s he was already recorded one of the best players in his college year. He is the representative of most professionals from the outside, by his car –his house –his friends you could never believe his friends would mock him behind his back. See his there was a change in Bradie-James life, as a Christian he made a commitment to be a disciple of Christ and for a football player, that means living a lifestyle that is very different from what is to be expected. He did not go out spending tons of his money, rather he gave it away for breast cancer research in honor of his mother. He did not go out and drank at the major parties, rather would go home early so he could attend church the next day. Often in the down times of practice he skipped going out to eat with the other players and would pray, read scripture. Again he was an average player and so others would look at him and ask, “Why do you not do the things? What makes you think you’re so special?” Let’s now take a look at how he’d respond.

LESSON-

Watch the Clip.

• Last week we talked about Romans 12:2, how was Bradie-James changed by that verse?

• What did he say he was able to do when people persecuted him for his faith?

• Does anyone get persecuted for their faith? How do you deal with it?

• How did Bradie-James rise above the persecution to play the game for Christ?

• What can you take away from this, if you are an athlete?

Bradie-James lived life differently, treating his faith first over all the riches and fame. His faith and living for Christ was more precious to him than anything else. This is what Christ commands of us to treat our faith. He is a perfect example of what Christ calls us to do. Let’s take a look at Matt. 13:44-45.

REFLECTION-

Often times we don’t live like Bradie-James, or this verse. Sundays become our feel good days, but when we are challenged to put things like sports, or a social life we tend to push “God” or “Christ” or “Church” aside and put things of this world up front. You’re not going to give these things but we need to learn how to prioritize, and then integrate our Christian faith into our daily lives.

Work of art:

Today we are going to take a piece of what’s in front of you, find things that symbolize the things your interested in such as a piece of a book, or school work, or of basket ball pieces, etc.

*Let the teens pick up parts of what ever suits them, then place up the overhead of the Christian image and have it shine over a large piece of paper. Have the group then use glue and together build a picture. At the end give the remaining pieces to the students as a way for them to remember that they should prioritize there time.

TOOK-

Take the lesson from Quest sheets.

I AM SECOND

Lesson 4- Inspired by Scripture

Opening Game:

“Simply Scripture”- this is a cross between ceraides and minute to win it. Split the group into two. Give each person (OR if in a big group give about 5 people) a piece of paper with a famous bible story and the scripture of where it is from (in case they need to look it up) Each member of each team will have 60 seconds to get their team to know what story they are silently acting out. For each team that can do it before the 60 seconds are up they get a point. Winning team is the ones that have the most points at the end.

HOOK-

Watch the short clip Man in The Hole ()

• Have you ever felt that you had a hole in your life? What did you do?

• In the story the man stuck in the hole tried everything that people thought would get him out of that hole, yet he remained stuck. How was what Christ did to the man different from all the others? –after answer ask: “what did the man have to do in order for Christ to save him “answer is ask for help, and accept Christ’s help”.

Introduce the testimonial about how a man got stuck in a very –very-very deep hole in his life. A hole that for many have no way out…but like the man in the hole Christ came to be his first when he asked.

LESSON-

Watch Christian-Hosoi’s clip.

Instead of Breaking up today, have the group first talk about their thoughts on Christian’s testimonial and how it affected them.

Ask them just how many just go and read the bible on its own in their free time. While they are talking about this, if the volunteers could pass out bibles that would be great! Explain to them that we are going to do something very special today. Instead of just an organized activity, it is going to be a 5-10 minute free time with music on in the background. I would like the students to separate out and get comfortable in areas around the room: could be a floor, under a table on the couch, by the windows, ANYWHERE!!! Just go and discover the Word of God freely.

REFLECTION-

At the end of the time gather back as a whole group and go into a reflection of the experience. Make sure to go through each person and ask them what they discovered with their faith.

TOOK-

Challenge this week is for them to find another scripture story. Anyone they want, and read it, then come in and explain what story they looked up with one thing they learned.

I AM SECOND

Lesson 5- I’ve been fearfully and wonderfully made

Opening game: Apples-to-Apples Spin-off!!!

At the opening give each of the teens an index card, and each a pencil (make it all the same look) Next ask them to write down a description of themselves, which they think is fully unique. It can be a description of how they feel when playing a sport, or a short story of a favorite memory, or what they want to be when they grow up, or a short story of a day in their life….something that is a personal aspect of themselves that they wouldn’t mind sharing and would be written in the first person. Once everyone is finished collect the cards and shuffle them up. Have a youth advisor read out the card. The game is for the whole group to raise their hands and guess who wrote the card. If they guess right, they keep the card. At the end of the game, whoever has the most cards will win.

HOOK-

Have the group jump into the middle (It would be a good idea to clear some room that day, then with tape put down the numbers 1 – 5 on the ground: Have the 1 be on the left side of the wall, the 5 on the right, the 2 & 4 giving space and the 3 in the middle where the students would be standing originally). Then ask these questions. Have the students run to what number best suits them. If they feel strongly they are /strongly agree –then they are a five. If they feel not at all or weakly /strongly disagree run to the 1; and so on.

1. I feel like I am judged or bullied by the way I dress.

2. Race plays a big part in whether or not someone is cool.

3. I should only date people who look like me or come from the same background as I do.

4. Jesus was white

5. God created us all different, but loves us all the same.

LESSON-

Watch:

REFLECTION-

Pull up the slide Psalm 139:13-14. In the remaining time split into two groups. Have each group line up. The race will be for them to go head-to-head in a game of speed saying the verse as fast as they can. Each time one finishes first the team gets a point. Go until the overall Momentum time is up. Group with the most points wins.

TOOK-

The memory verse will be written on Shadow body bookmarks or wristbands (if I can pull off finding some). If they can be able to repeat the memory verse next week.

I AM SECOND

Lesson 6- Taking off the mask

Opening Craft:

At the beginning when the kids show up the couches are all going to be in a line and in front of that line is a line of tables. Have the group make up taking, glitter, feathers, markers, the whole nine yards and make masks. Tell them the masks represent the you ‘you see yourself as being or the you that you want to be. Have all of them have enough eye pieces that they can see and then wear the mask.

HOOK-

While wearing the mask show the clip:

LESSON-

← Kristin’s testimony.

← Have the students take off their mask and go into a circle, and give their testimonials of how they’ve been with their masks or a time they’ve had to take off the mask.

← Explain that God loves them, for them and not the person that they wish they were.

REFLECTION-

Split the group into 3 smaller groups. Have group A read Acts 10:34-35; Group B read

1 Samuel 16:7; and Group C read Matthew 11:28-30. Have each group write a poem, do a mime, or song that teaches the verses. Then have the groups come back together and 1 by 1 tell the verse and do their thing explaining why they did it.

TOOK-

Whatever scripture was theirs have them try to memorize it. If they are able to do this give them challenge points and memory verse points.

I AM SECOND

Lesson 7 – Humble yourself

Opening Game:

Press Conference: Ask for two sets of four (do two rounds) out of those sets ask for two people to go outside with a volunteer, after you explain the game. “This game is called Press Conference. A famous celebrity of the remaining youth ‘audience’ choice has done something that is totally out of character and is now going to brag about it. However, not only will the famous person (AKA the two people) not know who they are, but they also won’t know what they have done. It is the task of these two groups here to help their teammates out but not give them so big of hints that instantly guess it.” That means that they have to go around the idea but still try to help them out. Both teams will be timed; the wining group is the team that can do it the fastest, but also play fairly. While the two go out, the audience picks who they are and what they have done. Set up a podium for the people to return to.

This game is meant to be the opposite of being humble. Even though it is ridiculous, it shows that often times, the first instinct we have, when we’ve done something awesome is to brag about it or claim it as that we ourselves did it, giving us all the credit. As disciples, however, we should give all the credit to God and humble ourselves.

HOOK-

Watch the video:

LESSON/ REFLECTION- This time BREAK OUT

Middle School:

Read Matthew 5:1-10:

← How is Christ asking us to be humble throughout this passage?

← How do these attributes help us to become humble?

← What are the real life applications to these attributes? In other words, what are some real examples of these attributes?

Read Luke 18:14:

← What does this passage ask us to do?

← How can we put Matthew 5 Attributes in order to humble ourselves? *Try to get the group find at least 3 real ways to put them into practice. CHALLENGE: ask the group to settle on 1 of those 3 and do them then if they come back and explain not only how they did it, but the outcomes they will get the points.

High School:

Read Matthew 5:1-10:

← How is Christ asking us to be humble throughout this passage?

o How do these attributes help us to become humble?

o CHALLENGE is to go take one of these passages and focus on them, then come back and have a evaluation conversation with the youth director on how it went.

Read James 4:1-11:

← How can we today fall into aligning ourselves with the things of this world, making ourselves enemies to God?

← What are the areas that we today as “teenagers” or “Young adults” have pride?

← In verses 7-10 what is being asked? How do we do it?

← In verse 11, what does Gossiping have to do with being humble? What does God call us to do with being humble? Does anyone know of any good examples of how gossiping has gotten in the way with their Christian walk?

TOOK-

Challenge points are in the lesson.

I AM SECOND

Lesson 8- I know where my hope lies... and it's not in being a rock star

HOOK

Opening Game:

Minute to Win it Rock star game: Before the day, prep a large white paper as a guitar, then cut it up into giant puzzle pieces. The student won’t know what they are building at first. Now ask five people to come up to the front. Have them face the wall; Explain that they have exactly one minute to construct the puzzle, that they don’t know what it is. One by one have them turn around and do the puzzle (they will face the opposite wall so they can’t see what their competition is building). At the end the winner will be who ever could do it the fastest.

Lesson- Show the clip:

Read and go through Romans 7:14-25.

1. Have the teens explain what they think it means from v. 15-16

2. How was Michael-w-smith a slave to sin?

3. What is the inner war that fights in all of us? Have them describe what that war looks like.

4. How does Christ rescue us? –go deeper than he dies for our sins, what is the actual process of his rescue. Help the students out here to dig deep into God changing them.

5. Leave it open for a time of sharing in how a specific moment that Christ rescued them from something.

Reflection:

Break into groups of 2 or 3. Give each group a piece of paper and a colored pencils set. Have the group make a picture map (a map with symbols or small iconic pictures of events) to show over the span of their lives hard times and times that Christ rescued them. Once they are done in the remaining time have them share with their friend(s) and then each friend prays for the other.

Challenge: Read Romans 8:18-28

Memory verse is: Romans 7:24-25

I AM SECOND

Lesson 9- Living as I am Second

Opening game: Distraction – Place three chairs in the center of the room. Have one person sit in the middle of the two chairs. Next have two more people sit in the remaining chairs that surround the one in the middle. For 30 seconds have each of the two people tell the middle chair two different stories while the person in the middle listens to each one in each separate ear. After the 30 seconds are up have the middle person try to retell each story. They win if they can successfully tell the frame of each story. Let more people try.

Hook- Watch the clip:

Evaluate the teens thoughts of this “celebrity” (because he really isn’t a celebrity, but a teenager who chose to live as I Am Second)

Lesson-

Have them open their bibles to Acts 2, but have no one read. Instead we are going to try something a bit different. Have bible gateway opened up and let the Audio play it for them and have them read it along trying to imagine the upper room.

When it is done, we will go over the story and talk about the change that happened and how at the beginning God called those, and what did they do? They went out and served. God has called us to be disciples of Christ, and thus like tonight we will discuss how we too can go out and serve.

Reflection-

Have the group work together to settle on one theme thing that they would make a pledge to do in order to make them active disciples. Then help them make a game plan, timeline, and roles throughout the youth group.

Challenge: What they must do their first leg of the timeline with their roles.

I AM SECOND

Lesson 10 – ‘I Am’ Second

When the students walk into the room, there will be an arm chair sitting in a set much like our own I Am Second studios. As the kids sign in and they can take a graphic I’ll have made about their chosen goal of last lesson. Have music playing in the (inspiring tobymac songs)

As soon as snacks are broken out, have the group sit down, do the T.R.E.Y. then show them your hair (The challenge ending) color!!! (hide it in a cap)

Tell them that this movie is a very important movie.

Lesson-

Show the clips – These clips are movie clips homemade of our church’s celebrity about I AM SECOND examples like: Randy, Stu, Janet, Ralf, Chick, etc. All videos are compiled together explaining how these people are Second to God. 10-15minutes

Reflection-

Have anyone that wants to come up and sit in the chair and explain how these past few weeks of I Am Second has changed them, and how they are living their lives as Second. Share their testimony. Have all the Youth volunteers do it as well. 10-15minutes.

Next break out the sharp markers and have each person write down a small testimony on the chair. Then sign it as their name, then I am second.
