No Walls

Icaro Ibanez-Arricivita:If I were an applicant, I would try and see if you are committed, if you’re curious, if you’re creative and you’re interested in Fashion. The university experience will expose you to an incredible amount of interesting people -- from researchers and industry people in the staff, and also a fantastic cohort of students.Regarding portfolio, we are looking at seeing creativity, originality -- how do you solve problems? What kind of things interest you? What are you bringing to the design process? What inspires you? What attracts you? Are you a hard worker? What can you do?So, for the selection, once we have all of your portfolios uploaded online, we will look at them -- it’s always two or more of our fashion team -- so we will open every portfolio, and every CV, and every application, and we will look into them, looking for students that have that creativity, openness and criticality towards their work.We have a very varied outcome -- people, they come to study fashion design because they have this intuition, or this desire to become a fashion designer, and during the years that they study here, they will learn a lot of different skills and be exposed to a wide variety of subjects, and ideas, and processes through their classes. And then at the end, people take so many different paths to work -- from the ones that start their own label, or others that work for big design companies, some others, they find themselves in the marketing world, or in sales, or in trend-forecasting, or pattern making – it’s really, really diverse. I think the fashion industry is one of the industries that has a wider variety of jobs to offer. So I think that is really good and interesting.I think that applicants should do a bit of self-inventory and see what are the areas that they are in love with regarding fashion design or the design industry, because it could be very different. So maybe explore that area of fashion that attracts you the most and work on that -- and start your journal if you don’t have one already with some images, some words and start working. I always talk to my students about fashion being as cooking – so if you can identify some ingredients that you like, start mixing them together and cooking, and then you will see a result that could be your journal or your portfolio. Yes, start diving deeper into the things that interest you -- be critical, be curious. ................
