Deputy Director; 2. Director of RICESalary: ?24,942 (FTE: ?62,355)BACKGROUNDRICE – The Research Institute for the Care of Older People has been helping older people live better lives since 1985. Our vision is to make growing older better by undertaking clinical research to improve the diagnosis, medical treatment and care of dementia and other health problems that are particularly relevant to older people. RICE is an independent, registered charity dedicated to essential research and providing support for people with dementia, their families and carers. We provide the contracted NHS Memory Service for the Bath and North East Somerset (BaNES) area. Our internationally renowned dementia research and treatment centre is located in a purpose built facility in the grounds of the Royal United Hospitals, Bath. The main focus of our research has been memory problems and dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s disease, but our research activities are now expanding to include other important health problems of older age. We are building strategic partnerships with the University of Bristol and the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust to further clinical research. Many of our other trials are undertaken in partnership with pharmaceutical companies. THE ROLE You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team (doctors, nurses and psychologists) working across a range of clinical and research activities at RICE. The work in our NHS contracted Memory Clinic helps us to identify and work with suitable patients for clinical trials, to develop ideas for research and to use the findings to help develop new treatments and inform best practice. Potentially the role offers longer term opportunities for the right person, combining clinical practice and research activities, and we are happy to provide training within the role as appropriate.Hours of work are normally 8.00am – 6.00pm, with 30 minutes lunch, but some flexibility is required. Occasional out of hours work may be necessary, for example as dictated by drugs trials. CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Memory Clinics Assess and diagnose patients attending the Memory Clinic Initiate and monitor treatment where appropriate Work closely with the nurses and psychologists within the RICE teamLiaise with GPs, mental health teams and other agenciesAssist with reviewing patient referrals Clinical Research Studies Assist with patient and volunteer recruitment Determine patients’ and volunteers’ suitability for research studies Provide medical supervision of patients and volunteers Supervise drug administration Report serious adverse events to relevant authorities , and provide follow upUndertake mandatory training for your role in each trialTake part in a rota carrying the (rarely used) emergency mobile phone for clinical trials Attend Investigators’ and other relevant meetings as appropriate Liaise with pharmaceutical company representatives for the duration of a clinical trial Ensure studies are carried out according to the protocol and relevant guidelines including Good Clinical Practice EDUCATIONAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Help to ensure that patients and carers are as fully informed as possible about their illnesses and benefits to which they are entitled. Be willing to give talks to carers attending Carers’ CoursesVisitors to the unit Explain the work of the Institute to visitors, including other health professionals and members of the public Health professionals Assist with professional educational meetings, the teaching of medical students and other occasional visitors to the Memory Clinic Outside organisations Represent the Institute at external functions and describing the work of the InstituteTraining of new staff Be willing to share skills and contribute to the training and supervision of all new medical, nursing and psychology staff Personal development Take responsibility for personal development and education Maintain up-to-date clinical skills in resuscitation and related activities Maintain standards of Good Medical Practice Undertake annual appraisal and work towards 5 yearly statutory revalidationOTHER RESPONSIBILITES Write clinical reports and assist with others when necessary The post holder is required to familiarise themselves with all RICE policies and procedures and to comply with these at all times. Be familiar with and work to all the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and assist in ensuring that they are kept up to date Abide by legal rules and statutory regulations relating to practice , including Mental Health LegislationAll staff must have eligibility to work in the United Kingdom. All staff are required to undergo DBS checks. Confidentiality must be preserved as detailed in the GMC “Duties of a Doctor”. Confidentiality must be maintained on any information – verbal or written – that is learned as part of the RICE research programme. PERSON SPECIFICATION You must have eligibility to work in the United Kingdom. All staff at RICE are required to undergo DBS checks. EssentialDesirableFully registered and in good standing with GMC with at least 2-3 years post registration experience. At least 1 year experience working with older adults, in hospital medicine, psychiatry (preferably old age psychiatry), a memory clinic or appropriate community setting such as General PracticeStrong team playerExcellent communication skills, verbal, non- verbal and written with both service users and other professionals Ability to function autonomously as well as part of a multi-disciplinary team Can demonstrate evidence of commitment to clinical governanceMember of a professional indemnity organisation (MDU or MPS)Enquiring mind, self motivated to learn and teachCar DriverExperience and familiarity with memory clinics and a range of clinical assessments and treatments for people with dementia and memory impairment. Experience of participating in clinical trials and/or other research programmes and projects.
