Shopping Surveys Before and After Implementation of the Healthy Corner Store (HCS) ProjectThe HCS survey was conducted at Bongs and “Parkside” (old Dairy Mart location/name) in December 2011 prior to the “grand opening” of Bong’s Healthy Corner changes on March 9, 2011 and Parkside’s grand opening on September 9, 2011. The pre HCS changes survey included 40 respondents. The post evaluation was conducted at both stores in November 2011 and included 35 participants. In both surveys the majority of respondents were from Bongs due to the significantly higher foot traffic. The final results are not statistically significant because of the small total number of surveys but they do show interesting perspectives. Another evaluation that was conducted as part of this project was a one day purchasing observation at Bong’s Convenience store. The results of this will also be included in this summary report.QuestionBefore HCS changesAfter HCS changesCommentHow often do you shop at this store?46 % daily37% dailyIt depends when you conduct the survey. Food Stamp benefits come out the first and 9th of the month. During this time many shoppers come in daily. At the end of the month the results could be quite different. What do you typically buy?68% milk47% snacks47% bread66% bread60% milk60% sodaObservation of typical purchases showed:#1 Sugar Sweetened Beverages #2 Costco muffins/candy#3 Unhealthy snacks (chips, cookies, etc)How often do you buy fruit and vegetables at this store?18% often/every 46% occasionally48% often/every40% occasionallySurvey results are not reflected in produce sales. Produce sales are approximately $600 per month (less than 2% total sales volume)How many fruit and vegetables do you eat in a typical day?7% zero28% one45% two8% zero54% one23% twoOn average one in four people eat recommended 5 fruit and/or vegetables per day. This survey shows approximately 5% of this population eat the recommended amount.Would you come here to use your WIC vouchers?YesYesIn both surveys almost everyone said yes although actual WIC participation is very low compared to the number of clients who received their WIC checks at the West Central Community Center walking distance from Parkside Grocery and Meat Mart.Although no statistical conclusion can be drawn from these surveys. It is interesting to note an apparent increase in awareness that fresh fruits are sold at Bongs and Parkside. Also, the need to increase fruit and vegetable consumption is apparent based on the very low consumption levels. Reported typical purchases are also interesting compared to actual purchase observations. In the post surveys respondents admitted buying sugar sweetened beverages (sodas) frequently. It may be that the need to purchase milk or bread brings people into the store but what is typically purchased most often may be more subconscious.Observation of Bong client purchases August 5, 2011 (8 hours)Findings: ItemTotal CountTotal Transactions 319Fruit/Veggies10Whole grain 2Low fat Dairy13Healthy Snack food60Unhealthy Snack food94 (30%)Soda/Sweeten beverage196 (61%)Alcohol 72Tobacco73Candy/Muffins 96 (30%)Other Findings Transactions/hour 37.5Total Items purchased 616Total Healthy Items Purchased 85Percent of Healthy Items Purchased 14% Definitions: Low fat dairy: Any dairy product that is 2%, 1%, low fat, or non-fatHealthy Snack: Nuts, Cliff bars, granola bars, water, sunflower seeds, Lunchable, burritos, 100% fruit juice, V8, soup, baked chips, trail mix, vitamin water, string cheese, Unhealthy Snack: Chips, whole milk, meat type stick (beef jerky, peperoni stick, jerky chew etc.) , high calorie frozen foods, ice cream, high sugar cereal, cookies, Soda/Sweeten Beverage: Energy drinks, soda, coffee drinks (i.e. Starbucks Frappuccino), sweetened tea, non-fruit juice, Kool-Aid. ................
