Downloading ebooks and audiobooks

for Nook Tablets

You’ll Need: your library card, smart phone or tablet computer, and the Overdrive Media Console installed on your Nook Tablet (downloadable for free through the Nook app store).

Some Overdrive Basics

4 Titles max can be checked out at the same time, with no renewals.

Checkout Periods – you get to choose! 1-3 weeks for ebooks and audiobooks.

If a book is popular, there might be a queue but you can sign up to be notified when it is available.

There’s no need to return a book but you’ll want to remove it from your device after you’re finished reading—see the last step of “Checking Out an eBook” for instructions.

Setting up the Overdrive Media Console App

1. After downloading the Overdrive Media Console, open the app. You will be in the "bookshelf" view and there will be one test audiobook (seen below) already on your shelf. Tap on the "options" icon at the bottom of the screen (a circle with three horizontal lines in it, highlighted by the arrow below) and choose "Get Books" from the options that appear.

2. You will now be in the "Get Books" view, where you will add the NOBLE system to the list of libraries you can download ebooks and audiobooks from. Tap on "Add a Library" at the bottom of the screen.

3. Enter in the library’s name, city, or zip code to search for the Peabody Institute Library and tap on “search”.

4. Tap on the star next to “NOBLE: North of Boston Library Exchange” so it turns yellow. You can now tap on the NOBLE listing to be taken into the catalog.

5. You are now in the online catalog for ebooks and audiobooks. If you need help navigating the catalog, see the accompanying section “searching the catalog” for more help.

Checking Out an eBook or Audiobook

1. Once you have found an item to check out, click “Borrow”. If the title is not available, you will see “Place a Hold” instead. You can change the amount of time you’d like to borrow the title underneath the “Borrow” button if you’d like.

2. This will take you to your bookshelf, where you will see other titles that you have checked out as well. Tap on “Download” to the right of the title.

3. If this is your first time downloading an ebook, you will be prompted to sign in with your Adobe ID. If you do not already have an Adobe ID, tap on “Get ID.” This will be a process you will only need to go through once.

4. If you need to create an Adobe ID, you will be taken to the Adobe website where you will fill out the form below. Be sure to uncheck the box asking to sign up for their email promotions, located just above the “create” button.

5. After creating your Adobe ID, you will need to tap twice on the back button in your browser (located in the upper-left corner, signified with a triangle pointing to the left). You will again see the page below, which lists your checked out items. Tap on “Download”.

6. You will again be prompted to input your new Adobe ID by tapping on “Settings”. Once you have entered your Adobe ID, tap on authorize. Your book will begin to download.

7. Tap on the “options” icon, revealing the option to go into “Bookshelf” view.

8. You will now be in the “Bookshelf” view of the Overdrive Media Console and the item will be downloaded. Tapping on the ebook/audiobook will allow you to begin reading/listening.

9. If you would like to return the item early, tap on the plus sign to the far right and tap on the “Return/Delete” option.

Searching the Catalog

A. This menu bar will always be present providing you with a link to your account, access to a simple search box, an advances search directly underneath it, or the option to return to the home page.

B. These columns allow you to browse by genre and interest and are divided into audiobook and ebooks.

C. A series of highlighted titles, which may or may not be available at that moment. Note that the icon in the upper-right of the cover indicates whether it is a book or an audiobook as well as whether it’s available or not (a black icon means available, light grey unavailable). Clicking on the bookmark below the cover will add the title to your wish list.

D. Below this you’ll find other options like “always available” ebooks and more categories of highlighted titles.

The Advanced Search

Advanced searching is your friend! Do you want an ebook or an audiobook? Are you looking for something right now rather than waiting for it to come later? Advanced searching will separate the wheat from the chaff.

A. The format option allows you to view only Overdrive app ebooks, which are labeled as Adobe or Open EPUB and PDF ebooks. Adobe ebooks are popular works of recent fiction and Open ebooks are mostly classic works of literature. For audiobooks, you’ll want to choose the MP3 audiobook.

B. Selecting “Show only titles with copies available” assures you that you won’t be teased with books which you’ll have to queue for.
