A Democrat and education activist, she has not shown gainful employment over the past twenty years, but has instead held volunteer positions and created businesses to help match students to schools. Hunt and her husband, Estonia-born Olav Nilender (previously Niilend), raised two children in Charlotte, NC. Daughter Katia is a 2018 graduate of University of Central Florida where she earned a degree in Hospitality and Hotel Management. Their son, Jonas, is currently a student at North Carolina State University where he is studying Mechanical Engineering. Her marriage to Nilender is a second for each. She is divorced from Michael Vecchiolla, who lives in Mt. Pleasant, SC, a suburb of Charleston, SC. While we are awaiting divorce records, the two were last a couple at least 25 years ago. Nildender was previously married to UK-born Patricia Ashcroft Niilend. The two adopted three children born between 1974 and 1980. According to their divorce filing, Patricia claimed that Nilender abandoned the family in early 1993, including the children, and provided little financial support until he was ordered by the courts. Their three children were teenagers at the time, and have since faced DUI/DWI, and in the case of their youngest daughter, Jessica, shoplifting, larceny, and personal property damage charges. They appear to have had a significantly different upbringing than the one enjoyed by Katia and Jonas, who own significant financial assets according to their mother’s financial disclosure.Hunt and Nilender were married just seven weeks after his divorce was final, and he formally changed his name a couple years later. The two have a significant age difference of almost 22 years, and he was 50 years to her 28 years when they married. He is only six years younger than her father.Hunt and Nilender appear to live a comfortable life. They own their home outright, a 3,300 square foot home on ? acre in Charlotte. The two have significant financial assets, and we show no record that Hunt has worked since the two wed, beyond her pet education projects. She also currently serves on the North Carolina Charter Schools Advisory Board and the North Carolina Education and Workforce Innovation Commission. She also serves on the board of directors (and previously as chairperson) of the Charlotte Secondary School, a public charter school where her son attended. In addition, she is involved in Generation Nation and the North Carolina Foundation for Public School Children.Despite announcing her candidacy for House District 103 after most candidates for State House in February 2018, Hunt has raised more than $100,000 and ran unchallenged in the primary. She shows more than $90,000 cash on hand. Background and BiographyIdentifying InformationName:Rachel Henderson Hunt (aka Rachel H. Any information reviewed from this request will be included in a supplemental memo.Nilender’s Divorce Niilend filed a complaint for divorce on March 29, 1994 after nearly 22 years of marriage. At the time of the divorce, he and his wife had three adopted children: Stephen A. Niilend (5/12/1974), Amanda E. Niilend (8/14/1979), and Jessica F. Niilend (4/21/1980). They separated on February 22, 1993, and he requested a divorce absolute based on more than one year of separation.Pauline Ashcroft Niiland accepted service on April 5, 1994 and filed an answer and counterclaim on April 22, 1994. She indicated that the children were 19, 14, and 14 years old at the time and were a year younger when he abandoned them in March 1993. Pauline indicated her need for the 1987 Volvo station wagon and the family home (2929 Hampton Avenue, Charlotte, NC) in order to care for their daughter Amanda, but their youngest, Jessica, was returned to the care of the Department of Social Services and was placed at Odom House in Pemborke, NC. Both parties were contributing to the cost of her care. These documents show that Nilenger was employed as an emergency room physician and partner in a company for which he was earning $20,833.33 monthly. Pauline had not worked outside the home for 21 years, and despite her current unemployment, she registered for classes to renew a teaching certificate. Pauline requested at least $1,879.24 per month to care for Amanda. At this time, Nilender had provided limited financial support since their separation. In addition, Pauline listed personal and household needs of $3,355.06 per month plus emergency support. She also requested equitable distribution of the marital assets.A summary judgment and absolute divorce order was granted on June 12, 1994, which permitted Hunt and Nilender to wed in August 1994 and buy a home shortly thereafter.A consent judgment for alimony was dated November 15, 2000. At this time, Pauline was working as a teaching assistant with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System. The parties agreed to alimony at $2,500 per month, which cannot change unless Nilender involuntarily loses his employment resulting in income less than $190,000 per year, one of them dying, Pauline remarrying, her cohabitation, or her 65th birthday. At this time, all of their children were adults. A final order of equitable distribution was dated November 15, 2000.
