What: Desatoya Herd Management Area Wild Horse Gather

Where: Approximately 77 miles east of Fallon, Nevada in Churchill and Lander Counties, Nevada

Planned number of horses to be gathered: 450 wild horses

Planned number of mares to be treated with the fertility-vaccine PZP and released back to the range: Approximately eight mares among a total of 19 horses released back on the range (40 % mares and 60% stallions).

Planned number of horses to be removed from HMAs: 431 excess wild horses

Population to be left in HMAs: Approximately 127

Planned duration of gather: The gather will last up to fourteen days.

Reason/s for the Gather: This gather is being conducted to adjust the wild horse population size to within the appropriate management level (i.e. 127-180 wild horses), to restore a thriving natural ecological balance, and to sustain healthy rangeland resources.

All orphaned foals that require special care will be sent to the Northern Nevada Correctional Center for care.
