p Learn About a Saint Who Had Courage

Oscar Romero

Oscar Romero was a bishop in El Salvador during the time there

was a terrible civil war. Government troops were killing people in

different towns. Rich people were making poor people even

poorer. People started forming groups of their own soldiers and

they were killing people who supported the government soldiers.

It was so bad that children could count the dead bodies in the streets every day as they

walked to school.

Bishop Romero started to speak out against poverty, social injustice, and the murders of

so many people. His homilies were broadcast on the radio and many people listened to

his words as he called for peace. Many powerful people got angry when they heard his

message because he was telling them to stop using their power to get rich or to kill

people. But he knew that preaching God's message was the right thing to do so he kept

on spreading the message of justice and peace. He had a lot of courage to do this. One

day while he was celebrating Mass, some soldiers came into the chapel and shot and

killed him at the altar. HIs death -- and his words -- inspired people to bring peace to El

Salvador.

(There is a link to a five-minute video about Bishop Romeros Life on our web page

A movie, called "Romero" starring Raul Julia as Bishop Romero, was released in 1989.

It's well worth the viewing for adults and older children. Too intense for younger children.)
