This is a whole time post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals. Applicants must be eligible for full Registration with the GMC at time of appointment.St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust A ?338 million (PFI) investment has re-built and modernised both Whiston and St Helens Hospitals, resulting in modern state of the art health care facilities for the treatment and care of patients. St Helens Hospital was completed in 2008 and Whiston Hospital in 2010. The hospitals include 887 inpatient beds with state of the art CT and MRI facilities existing on both hospital sites. CT and MRI scanners at St Helens have also recently been upgraded including installation of a high field 3 Tesla MRI scanner. The DEXA scanner is also located at St Helens Hospital.The Trust provides a full range of acute inpatient, outpatient, day case and emergency services to local communities of St Helens, Knowsley, parts of Halton and Liverpool. The Regional Plastic Surgery and Burns Unit also extends its services to the whole of Cheshire, Merseyside, North Wales and the Isle of Man.As a Trust, our aim is to provide a high quality service to all patients. Whiston Hospital Whiston Hospital a busy teaching hospital which provides a comprehensive range of acute Medical and Surgical Services, Emergency Services, Maternity Services, Paediatrics and Medicine for Older People. The Regional Burns and Plastic Surgery Units are also based on this site. There is a Critical Care Unit consisting of ICU, HDU, CCU and an onsite Cardiac Catheter Laboratory. The stroke consultants deliver 24/7 thrombolysis to eligible patients presenting with acute stroke. There is a 30-bed Stroke Unit which accommodates both acute stroke patients and those with rehabilitation needs. St Helens Hospital St Helens Hospital is an Ambulatory Care Centre providing Intermediate Care and Day Surgery. Rheumatology, Dermatology and Diabetes services are based on this site and within easy reach of other acute specialties at Whiston Hospital. It is situated on the edge of Merseyside, between the open countryside of Cheshire to the south and Lancashire to the north.Manchester City Centre is a short 23 miles from Whiston Hospital; accesses to motorway networks are a short 5 minute drive (including M62 and M6). Both Whiston and St Helens Hospitals are within easy reach of the City of Liverpool (20 minutes by car), and access to motorway networks (including M62, M6, M57 and M58) is also convenient. Department FacilitiesThe Women’s Health Directorates is based at Whiston Hospital with some outpatient services and day surgery at St Helens hospital. The Unit contains 53 obstetric beds, a Special Care Baby Unit of 15 cots (Level 2), and a Gynaecology Ward which has 25 beds. There is a well-appointed Labour Ward Suite adjacent to 2 dedicated Maternity Operating Theatres. All in-patient care is undertaken at Whiston Hospital. Some ante-natal and gynaecology clinics are sited elsewhere and you will be expected to possibly be involved in these. General ante-natal and gynaecology clinics are carried out in the maternity out-patient area. There are specialist clinics such as colposcopy, uro-dynamics, assisted reproduction, bleeding in early pregnancy, outpatient hysteroscopy, minor procedures and a feto-maternal assessment unit.Obstetrics The unit delivers approximately 3,800 deliveries a year, peripheral clinics are held at Halton Hospital, Highfield, Haydock and Newton-le-Willows. There is a good working relationship with the Midwives in the unit; the unit has developed the concept of Core Midwives on Labour Ward and the Fetal Maternal Assessment Unit, which is situated in the outpatients’ area, offers specialist investigation facilities for high risk obstetric patients. An ECV (External Cephalicc Version) service is provided. There are Consultant Anaesthetists who have a special interest in Obstetric Anaesthesia; these include Dr John King, Dr Peter Yoxall, Dr Helen Binns, Dr Janet Slee, Dr Caroline Smyth and Dr Clare Athwal, Dr Sandra Fisherl. There are multi-disciplinary policies and procedures developed between Obstetricians, Midwives, Paediatricians and Anaesthetists, and all the main risk areas have policies.Gynaecology There are Specialist Clinics in the Unit, such as Colposcopy, Bleeding in Early Pregnancy, Out-patient Hysteroscopy, Minor Procedures and Uro-dynamics. Minimally invasive procedures are carried out, such as endometrial ablation, Novasure ablation, balloon ablation, hydrothermal ablation and laproscopic procedures. The Theatre facilities include camera equipment and all standard surgical instruments.The Work of the Department There are approximately 3800 deliveries and 3,000 gynaecological operations per year. There are specialist interest clinics and they include early pregnancy assessment, colposcopy, ECV, urodynamics, medical obstetrics, Teenage pregnancy, infertility and combined oncology. There is a feto-maternal day unit. The operating theatres have facilities for minimal access surgery. Clinics are held at Halton, St Helens, Newton-le-Willows, Widnes and Haydock.Friday afternoons are reserved for teaching and Strs are expected to attend the Mersey deanery regional teaching programme. There is a rolling programme of monthly audits and individual Strs would be expected to contribute towards audit. There are third and fourth year medical students from the University of Liverpool.Medical Staff The Unit consists of 10 Consultants, 3 Associate specialists, 2 Specialty Doctor, 5 Specialty trainees - STRs3–7 (Registrars), 7 STRs1/2 (Senior House Officers), and 2 FY2 Trainees. The Registrar staffs are linked to the Mersey Registrar Rotation. The Unit also receives Medical Students from the University of Liverpool. Duties and ResponsibilitiesIt would be expected that any successful candidate would take an active role in the service provision of the Department. In addition they would be expected to help in the running of the Department. This would involve active participation in education and audit as well as help with the organisation of the rota. The exact timetable would vary depending on which firm the LAS was attached. It is hoped that the attachment would depend on the individual training needs of the Doctor. The core sessions of the ANC, Gynae clinic, Labour ward and Theatre will form the basis of the rota with additional service and educational sessions.AccommodationWhen on-call a suitable room will be provided.
