TABLE OF JULIAN DAY NUMBERS, 1950 ? 2100
INTRODUCTION The Julian day number is a uniform time scale often used in astronomy and related applications. It is defined to be the total number of days elapsed since 12h UT (universal time) on Monday, January 1, 4713 B.C. (on the Old Style, or Julian, calendar). The Julian day number is often convenient as a uniform time axis for plotting, or as a simple method for computing the number of days between two calendar dates. The following pages give the Julian day numbers at 0h UT for each day for the 151 years between 1950 and 2100. The three digits at the top of each column should be added in front of the number tabulated. For example, the Julian day for January 1, 1950, 0h UT is 2433282.5. A fractional day may be added to the Julian day numbers tabulated. For example, for 18h UT on January 1, 1950, the Julian day number is 2433282.5 + 18/24 = 2433283.25. To find the Modified Julian Day (MJD), subtract 2400000.5 from the Julian day number. For example, the Modified Julian Day for January 1, 1950, 18h UT is 33282.75. To find the day of week for any date, add 1.5 to the tabulated Julian day number and divide the result by 7. A remainder of 0 indicates a Sunday, 1 a Monday, 2 a Tuesday, 3 a Wednesday, 4 a Thursday, 5 a Friday, and 6 a Saturday. For example, the tabulated Julian day number for January 1, 1950 is 2433282.5. Adding 1.5 and dividing by 7 gives 347612 with a remainder of 0, so this date is a Sunday.
