AG-ACNP Job DescriptionJamie McGuireWright State University AG-ACNP Hospitalist Job DescriptionRoleThe Adult Gerontological Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AG-ACNP) practices as an independently licensed practitioner within the scope of practice outlined by the APRN Regulatory Model (AACN, 2012). In accordance with the Ohio Board of Nursing, said practitioner must maintain a current, valid Certificate of Authority and a current standard collaboration agreement with an active licensed physician. The AG-ACNP Hospitalist role can assist in moving patients throughout the hospital effectively and efficiently, maximizing resource utilization, meeting national guidelines, while improving the quality of patient care (Rosenthal & Guerrasio, 2010). As outlined by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the AG-ACNP is responsible for diagnosing and managing acute and chronic illnesses while emphasizing health promotion and disease prevention. The AG-ACNP orders appropriate diagnostic work up and interprets findings to derive the appropriate plan of care for each individual patient. Additional major parts of the AG-ACNP role include teaching and counseling patients and their families (Kleinpell, Hudspeth, Scordo, & Magdic, 2011). Specific RoleThe AG-ACNP shall collaborate and support an assigned Internal Medicine Section physician and carry out hospital duties at Kettering and Sycamore Hospitals, LifeCare, Dayton Rehabilitation Institute, and Kindred Hospitals.
