PROGRAMS & PATHWAYS VOCABULARY SCRAMBLE

Description of Activity:

• Active learning that gets students out of their seats

• Match terms with descriptions and learn more about programs, pathways and related careers

• Cooperate and communicate with others to get the job done as quickly as possible

• Reading and thinking is required to match the terms

• Students seem excited and teacher is thrilled to hear students using the vocabulary

Object of the Activity:

• Turn in matched terms and descriptions

• neatly glued to construction paper

• in alphabetical order

• all group members’ names and period on the back.

• Complete the assignment in a given amount of time or faster than a competing class (optional)

Preparation:

1. Copy one vocab sheet for each group of 3 to 4 students—Ex. For 24 students you would need 6 or 8 sheets

2. For each class, use a paper cutter to cut all terms and definitions to separate them

3. Place cut up definitions and descriptions in a bag or box and shake to “scramble” them.

4. Take slips out of box or bag and divide them somewhat evenly based on the number of groups you have (each group doesn’t have to have the exact same number of slips).

5. Paperclip together for easy distribution

NOTE: Each clipped grouping will have some terms and or definitions that are the same which makes students have to communicate and cooperate as they trade so their group can complete the activity.

6. Supplies

a. Glue sticks (enough to have one per group)

b. Construction Paper (preferably a different color for each group, but if not, that’s fine)

7. Determine ahead of time how you want to divide into groups

Before you begin:

1. Each group has all the required supplies

2. Each student has a job (getting slips they need, organizing slips to glue, gluing)

3. Students know that you will hand it back to them if any matches are incorrect or if you can’t judge because of messiness.

4. There will be no running, rudeness or keeping papers hidden. It’s not a competition to see which group finishes first.

5. Students don’t begin until you give the signal
