After some welcoming remarks and highlights about what’s new for this year’s tournament, we had a wonderful presentation from key note speaker Jacob Tuckfelt, Esq., a Warwick attorney. Along with his analogy of the attorney as the “conductor” of the witnesses, he offered useful tips on preparing for a trial. For example, he suggested making a tree-like chart of questions for examining opposing witnesses, branching off with a few possible answers and how to address them. We also conducted the traditional lottery for Rounds 1 and 2 on Saturday, March 15th, and enjoyed a pizza party. Each team received two case booklets and a CD of the 2014 Mock Trial Tournament, a civil case, The People of the State of New York vs Penn HydraGas, Inc., and Mitchell Tomley, CEO. Each team also received advanced registration forms for Rounds 1 and 2. Special thanks to Nancy Faddis-DeCerbo and Pam White from the BOCES for their help and to Judge Klein for lining up our key note speaker. The following teacher coaches graciously volunteered to role play the witnesses for the January 14th Simulated Trial at the Goshen Town Court, from 4-6pm:Witnesses for the PlaintiffWitnesses for the DefendantMickie McDonald, victim and hog and dairy farmer –Michael Dunleavy (Port Jervis)—ILL NEEDS A REPLACEMENTMitchell Tomley, defendant and CEO of Penn HydraGas, Inc. –Kristina VanDeMark (Marlboro)Dr. Ryan Toolittle, geology professor, co-owner of an EPA-approved testing laboratory and Executive Producer of the documentary films Gas Country and Gas Country II.—Anthony Verboys (Monroe-Woodbury)Dr. Shawn Marshall, geologist with the Natural Gas Institute—Michael Truncale (NFA) Bobbie Jones, former chemical engineer of Penn HydraGas, Inc., a member of Pennsylvania’s and New York’s green environmental group (Stop All Fracking Forever [SAFFE]) and the water quality engineer of the Village of Milivar Water Authority.—Amy Patino (James O’Neill)Billie Jo Simpleton, Deputy Director of the Business Development Council of Pennsylvania and former Vice President of Operations for Penn HydraGas, Inc. --UNFILLEDWe still need a teacher-coach in the role of Dr. Ryan Toolittle and Billie Jo Simpleton, along with two alternates, one for the plaintiff and one for the defense. Please contact me asap if you are willing to help out. If unforeseen circumstances cause your team to withdraw from the tournament, the final deadline for withdrawal is February 1st. It is imperative that no team withdraw after this date, as it is unfair to the opposing team, after all its hard work, to jeopardize its chance to perform. This year’s Mock Trial Tournament features a change in time limits (see page 14 of the booklet) and the addition of a timekeeper from each team for each trial. Consequently, trials may last an additional 30 minutes. The BOCES will provide a clock for each trial. Please be sure your time keeper has the page with a large “1” (located in the Appendix of the booklet) to hold up when one minute remains for an attorney. Lottery results for Rounds 1 and 2, Saturday, March 15th, 9:00am-4:00pm at the Orange-Ulster BOCES, are as follows:ROUND 1 (9:15am-11:45am)ROUND 2 (1pm-3:30pm)Plaintiff Defense Plaintiff Defense 1 Goshen 6?
