Introduction

This manual provides guidance for New York State nonpublic school authorities and code enforcement officials pertaining to the requirements for annual fire safety inspections of nonpublic school facilities.

The intent of the annual inspection is to verify that buildings comply with State Education Law, the regulations of the Commissioner of Education, and applicable sections of the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code.

Step-by-step instructions for the planning, inspection, post inspection, and documentation requirements are included in this manual. The requirements in this manual are in conformance with the 2015 International Fire Code (IFC), 2015 International Building Code (IBC), 2015 International Property Maintenance Code (IPMC), and the NYS Uniform Code Supplement.

NOTE: Only nonpublic school student occupied facilities must be inspected (classroom buildings, dining halls, dormitories, etc).
