Lancaster, New York

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT REQUIREMENT

FOR PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION

Overview

In New York State, holders of the NYS Professional Certificate must complete 175 hours of professional development every 5 years in order to maintain their certification. Throughout the course of the school year, teachers have questions as to whether or not certain activities count toward these required hours. NYS offers guidelines for districts to follow, but ultimately activities are approved by Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Pupil Personnel Services. The following is intended to assist Lancaster Central School District teachers in identifying professional development activities as they prepare to comply with teacher certification requirements requiring continuing professional development.

NYS Guidelines for Content

According to NYS guidelines, the content of courses, workshops, and other professional development experiences that count towards these requirements need to be directly related to:

• enhancing teacher subject matter knowledge;

• teacher knowledge, use and application of appropriate teaching techniques;

• broadening and enhancing teacher abilities to apply more accurate and appropriate assessment methodologies; and

• enhancing teacher skills in effectively managing individual students and classroom in both heterogeneous and homogeneous settings.

Verification

Verification of attendance is required for all professional development hours for which you requesting credit. Be sure to sign-in for all activities; a sign-in sheet should be provided at all district activities for which professional development hours are approved. Multiple-day conferences require attendance verification (i.e. handout) for each session attended.
