Do you believe in miracles?

All 48 people, in tee times starting at 12:24pm, finished yesterday.

The last group out, playing on the edge of darkness, brought back the winning score in the scramble.

A truly amazing effort was put in by everyone, even more incredible due to the fact that: most had never seen the course or known its nuances; 25 mph winds and cold took their toll, although some people brought their own hand and body warmers; and all this while taking in the views on this uniquely, mountainous course, and racing the sun so that we all could finish. A fun course, with a very helpful staff, and lots of variety for the ladies in the proshop, which we will keep on our annual schedule in the future.

We welcomed Cheryl, Deborah, Jack, Lynn, Jeanne, Loren, and Connie and hope they will all come back and join us again.

Joe Candee came all the way from Albany, NY, to help lead his team to victory. We'll hope to see him again later this winter.

There were a number of memorable shots yesterday but the highlights included: for the first time ever, 14 people won 14 different proximity prizes, including: Barbara Keeler putting her name on three proximities, while George Purnell and Donna Swenson had two; and, not to be outdone, Kathy Hartmann's 69' putt and John Day's 320 yd. drive that was 10' shy of the green on a par 4! Well done.

For the results, see below.

We have a survey question for you.

In the past, we have tried to play some 'games' on the golf course, using different formats for fun. Some people have asked about this since we are supposed to be a fun, social group that plays golf.

How would you feel if we tried some fun formats from time to time ?

For those of you who have participated in some fun formats, your recommendations would be appreciated.

We are continuing to upgrade our schedule, adding on some new and exciting places to play.

Our tentative 2008 schedule is now posted on our website, at: singlesgolfftl . Keep an eye on it as we will be making adjustments as we finalize agreements, with more outings including food afterwards.

On Saturday night, January 19, at 7pm, we will have our annual dinner to kick off the year at Buca di Beppo in Ft. Lauderdale. After the holidays, it's always good to see our old and new friends again. We've added a little spice on this year's program, including three new items on their menu.

- Saturday night poolside BBQ buffet, starring ribs n' chicken. $25, inclusive.

- Sunday night dinner buffet & dance, $26 inclusive.

We will all chip in for the DJ on Sunday night.

Deer Creek provided the backdrop for another memorable and historic day for our chapter on Mother's Day yesterday.

It marked the end of 5 years of having fun, making new friends and playing golf for our group. I hope that it has been as rewarding for you and it has been for us.

We have to thank Lauren and the members of Events and Adventures for joining us again. They are always most welcome to join us for any of our outings. As a group, we will see them again at the Boca Country Club on October 14, if not sooner.

Thank you also to our resident LPGA Teaching Pro, Nancy Stuart, for giving some mini-lessons on the range before hand. Nancy, who conducts her clinics at Boca Dunes on Saturday mornings, always makes our outings a little more fun.

As we prepare to start our 6th year next month, one thing was quite evident again yesterday- we need more people, like Sharon, Carolyne and Barbara, to assist in order to make the most of our outings and to keep our chapter going strong.

While some of you were noticing the light show in the sky, some of our old friends dropped in on us and made some fireworks of their own.

More than 6 people made putts from 25' and beyond, topped by Jean Wiegel's 51 footer on #9. Jean also put her name on a couple of proximities, (under Paris Hilton's of course), and brought her friend, Kathy Ryan, all the way from Chicago, who put her name on two more signs. If two gals from Chicago weren't enough, Carolyne Trombly, the pride of Minnesota, started her round with a birdie, ended with an eagle and carried Mike and Dave around on her shoulders all day.

Here are the results, some of which took some ol' fashioned algebra and Barbara's calculator to figure out:

Scramble

1st: Becky Stevicks, Jim Despirito, Don Gardner, Frank Bonora* (with a record low 6.75 !)

2nd: Carole Cohen, Rich Levy, Carole Weinberg, Steven Goldberg* (7.8 !)

3rd: Kay Mica, James Bonds, Carolyn Cilla, Rich Magnetta*

Schamble

1st: Carolyn Trombly, Carolyn Trombly, Mike Doddy, Dave Mundy*

March 2007

The days just don't get much better than our day at Inverrary on Sunday. A course in good condition, with fast greens and the kind of weather you wished was ours everyday.

The snow storm up north brought Janet and Florence from NJ and Rick from Philadelphia. When the airport closed in Philly, Tom was kind enough to step in for his snowed in buddy, Rich Schonwald. I'll bet that they weren't in a hurry to get back to the airport. Linda and Sandy joined us for the first time and we'll hopefully see them again too.

Meryl was our player of the day, coming off the injured reserve list recently, and, with a hand from 'Coach Mike', never looked better on the fairway and practically didn't miss a putt from on or off the greens.

Here are the results:

Al Amore and our friends from ASGA Orlando are organizing an outing in Naples for all of our friends in Florida and beyond. Here's some information for you.

Orlando Spring Event!

April 20 - 22, 2007 - Naples, Florida

Naples is located on the beautiful Gulf Coast of Southwest Florida. Golf and accommodations will all be inside the Green Links Condos at the Lely Resort with golf on the magnificent Mustang and Flamingo courses.

Flamingo Island by Robert Trent Jones, Sr.

One of the game’s most prolific and innovative golf course architects, Robert Trent Jones, Sr. designed Flamingo Island to emphasize the hallmarks of his architectural style.

The course is characterized by extensive sculpting and shaping of the land. He implemented strategic deployment of water as a playing hazard and a scenic complement to the course as well as the use of multiple teeing areas with large, contoured greens. This combination of design elements yields 18 holes of pure Robert Trent Jones, Sr. magic.

The Mustang by Lee Trevino

Lee Trevino’s philosophy of making the game challenging but fair even for average golfers is evident on this masterful championship course.

Designed with a forgiving layout where a player can recover from a bad shot, this course will have you coming back time after time. Twelve lakes decorate the landscape and extensive bunkering is found throughout. However, Trevino designed generous landing areas and fair entries to the greens. At 7,200 yards from the back tees, it is a course that provides varied and spectacular conditions for players of all skill levels.

This Sunday, October 1st, at 12pm, we're making our annual stop on the tour at Emerald Hills CC, in Hollywood, which is one of the top two private courses in Broward County.

We'll be having our "Second Chance Tournament" too. Everyone needs a second chance from time to time. Between the tee box and the green, if you don't like your shot, drop a ball and play another. You can do this one time on each hole. But you must play the 2nd ball if you use it. Use your SFLA PGA Golfpass, which they've accepted in the past, (and give us $5 for prizes), or send us $59 for members and $64 for non-members. Please remember that our 1st and 2nd time guests are allowed to play at member rates. We'll have dinner nearby afterwards, possibly at the Hollywood Ale House.

We had great weather and lots of fun in what will probably be our last appearance at Oak Tree on a rare Saturday, a make-up day for a rainout in July. The bulldozers are moving in on October 10, to build homes on this nice course. It will be missed.

It was nice to have dinner afterwards at Buca di Beppo too, where we have our annual dinner. Next year, it will be on Saturday, January 13, when we will kickoff our new season.

Here are the results from this rather casual round:

Oct 15: Deer Creek, Deerfield Beach 1pm $47/52

(Remember that we have a 64 max there, so sign up early)

What an absolutely beautiful, historic day we had at the Boca Country Club yesterday. 84 people came and broke our record for a one-day event ! We enjoyed great weather, a challenging course with fast greens, a lot of hospitality from the staff, free Gatorade and water, and had a fun day. Almost 70 people made it to the Neighborhood Sports Grill afterwards and had more of a chance to get acquainted.

A BIG THANK YOU to Phil Brodt, for arranging for us to play at this wonderful place. We'll 'comp' your round too, if you can help us get on to a very nice place. Please let us know.

Here are some of the highlights of the day:

- 29 new people came out for the first timeeee. Events & Adventures brought 15 people and The Executive Womens Golf Association sent 6 members too.

- One of the new E & A guys guys showedddd up unannounced, forgot that there was water beside his green, and, while measuring his putt, did a back flip into the lake; (the East German judge gave him a 5 on the dive).

- In her very first outing with us, and on hher very first drive of the day, Donna Swenson hit her ball within two blades of grass of the line, to win the straightest drive. For good measure, Nancy Campbell was 1/4" away for second. Well done, ladies !

- A more relaxed Joe Feller, playing a schaaaamble, almost made his first hole-in-one on #5, into a 2-club wind, over water, getting inside Mike Doddy, who was only 3' away. Nice going, guys !

- Welcome Chantal Keable, who in her first oouting, had the low score for women and her name on three proximities. Tres bien, Chantal !

- Thank you, Nancy Stuart, our resident LPGAA Teaching Pro, for working with our people on the range before the outing and inpiring her team to a low gross of 64 in the scramble. Call Nancy at 561-628-7354 if you need help with your game.

August 2006

The sun came out at Hillcrest yesterday and made for a great day. We had some close competition with our scramblers shooting 65,(2), 68, 69... while our stroke players were shooting 87, 88 & 89. Then we got to watch Tiger put on an exhibition on the back 9 of the PGA during dinner.

We met Beth Kassel, Claudia Zeien, Tracy Murrell and Deborah Walker for the first time and they will all be most welcome members someday. Beth made quite an impression, being a 10 handicap after playing for only two years ! If we introduce her to our friend, Jim McLean, she might be on the tour someday !

Joel, take a bow. After attending the first three days of the PGA at Medinah, (he actually missed the final day to join us- that's what you do when you have Joy in both your heart and your cart), Joel was so inspired that he hit his first shot 3' from the pin, put his name on all 4 of the proximity signs and led his team to victory. Tim almost made a hole-in-one just to win the prize on #3.

Here are the results:

Scramble

1st : Cara Roberts, Jeff Bager, Joy Carter, Joel Allen*

2nd: Susan Ames, Ed Boen, Barbara Walley, Jack Mouradian

*** We're now in our 5th year as an ASGA chapter. For us to grow, there has never been a greater need for more people to assist us in presenting the best product we can. We will be bringing flyers and business cards to post and pass out at our future outings. We are also looking for other singles groups in town with whom we can have joint outings. If you, or your friends, have affiliations with other groups, including online dating services, we would welcome your assistance in bringing us together for an afternoon on the course. Of course, if you know of anyone who is a member of a private golf club, we would love to add them to our calendar, which we try to upgrade each year.

We're setting up a new Board of Directors so please call or drop us a line if you can pitch in.

Our first meeting will be in early September. ***

60% chance of rain ? Tropical Storm Chris heading out to sea? Apparently, the Golf Gods wanted us to play the brand new Plantation Preserve course with lush fairways, sandy bunkers and fast, rolling greens. Although it looked ominous while we were on the range, it turned out to be a beautiful day.

Just another reminder that you never know about SFLA weather in the summer, so just go for it !

Our first dinner at TGI Friday's turned out pretty well too- the giant happy hour drinks didn't hurt either.

For those of you who missed the proceedings before the outing... it was unofficially "Sharon Kent Day" on Sunday. Sharon, one of our original members, works for the City of Plantation and has helped to supervise the planning, construction and ongoing operation of the course, as well as many other facilities in the city. We couldn't have played there without her help yesterday and will continue to do so every year.

And now over to the History Channel... nearly five years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting and playing with Sharon and Linda Williams, (who you better be nice to or you'll never get a permit through the City of Davie), at my first outing with the original FTL chapter of ASGA. I had so much fun on that memorable day that I decided to eventually relaunch the chapter in June 2002 and the rest is history.

I know how much this club has meant to me. It changed my life and only for the better. I am very grateful for the all the friends I've made and nice people I've met. Please thank these gals when you can because none of us would have had the good fortune of meeting each other without their help and enthusiasm.

By the way, Sharon, Linda and I played in a foursome together for the first time on Sunday since we first met. With Dan Winter's help, we may have tied or broken the club record coming in at 64, or 8 under par, in our scramble, just to say thank you to Sharon.

Here are the rest of the results:

Mike and Arlene had a pretty good day but the Spirit award goes to Hildy and Jim. When the wind blew their scorecard across the fairway and into the lake, we had our first legitimate reason for a lost scorecard. If you want to see footage of their race to catch the card, go to: espnclassic/scorecardchase/panicattack , and you'll catch some history; (if you miss it, Hildy, thanks to her spinning class, wins ! )

Our next outing will be at Hillcrest CC in Hollywood on August 20, at 12pm. This course was built on coral and drains better than any around, which is why we play there every August. July 2006

It was nice to see Heron Bay again yesterday. Unfortunately, while we watched Tiger win the British Open, the rains came and soaked the course. Thankfully, our wonderful band of banchees weren't ready to call it a day, so we took off for Oak Tree and played as much as we could, before the weather found us again. With dinner afterwards, we managed to salvage the day and have some fun too.

Our courses in August are the best draining ones we play, so let's hope for a change for the better.

On August 6, at 130pm, we will be playing the brand new Plantation Preserve course. Parkland and Miami Beach have the same lush, sea dwarf paspalum grass. The price is $53 for members and $58 for non-members. Dinner afterwards will be nearby.

Thank you Carl, our new board member, for pitching in with registration.

Congratulations to Donna on becoming a grandma for the first time. Breaking 100 is becoming more commonplace for her now. She also had her name on three signs.

Firing at the pins... a number of people had their names on multiple signs, including Joy, Jack, Dan, and Joel. They all took a backseat to Fran though, who broke our record putting her name on FOUR signs. Way to go girl !

Fran was so happy that she started talking about hosting another holiday party in December. Stay tuned...

Our next outing will be on July 23 at the TPC @ Heron Bay, in Coral Springs at 1pm. It will be our first time there, where, until a few years ago, they hosted the annual Honda Classic, where a number of us volunteered. It may have the best practice facilities in the area, thanks to their hosting of a PGA Tour event, so come a little early to take advantage of them. The price is $58 for members and $63 for non-members. Dinner afterwards, (optional), will be nearby and finalized asap.

Welcome back, Mary Ellen, our star of the day, leading her winning team and putting her name on three signs !

*************************

While Tiger put it in cruise control down at Doral, we had a very nice afternoon at Pembroke Lakes.

We welcomed Mari Day and Frank Billera to their first events, who both played well, but the star of the day had to be our webmaster, Paul Cosentino. Although he's only been playing once or twice a year, he found his game, with the help of some 'newer' clubs, and led his team to victory. The Smithsonian later called to ask him to donate his clubs to their historical exhibit. Apparently, like a few other areas of life, it is just like riding a bike. We hope to see more of him this year.

Dinner at Stevie B's, while watching Tiger tame the field, was over par, as usual.

Here are the results:

Sharon, Carol and Joy Carter deserve a note of thanks. Carrying up to three guys on their team took some doing, but someone had to do it. Our gals must have been off Tiger hunting on Sunday.

This Saturday night, the 25th, we are going to the Don Carter Bowling Center, near Glades & 95, in Boca Raton, on Saturday, February 25, at 8pm. The price is based on: # of games or hours of play and whether you have food included. We are exploring a number of dinner options nearby at 6pm for those who are interested. Burgers, sandwiches and pizza lead a menu of usual bowling alley food fare, for those who are so inclined.

So, in our first attempt, and everyone from Miami to WPB and beyond is invited, we need to know if you want to bowl and if you wish to grab a bite beforehand, as we have to reserve lanes in advance. For those who sign up, (and we have 15 already), we'll let you know by Thursday where we are going to eat at 6pm.

FYI... the bowling ranges from $4.25-$4.50/person/game or $21-$29/hour for the lane; we'll have 4-6/lane. Shoes are $3.75. Best deal: "Pizza Bowl", $52.95/ 2 hours of bowling, shoes, 1 large 1 topping pizza, 1 pitcher of Pepsi. Each lane will share their own bill. Pay as you go.

Please RSVP by Thursday, February 23.

Mother Nature apparently did not see the partly cloudy forecast for last Sunday and sent the liquid sunshine instead. We just made the most of it. Everyone there will get a $10 credit towards a future round too.

We do have to thank some of our friends from far away for helping to make the round and Buca dinner that much more fun. Donna Orlando, founder of our NJ chapter; Harriet Laing, from Toronto; and our new friends from Daytona Beach, Barb Sternett, and Michigan, Patricia Burry and Linda Kantz. Apparently, Patricia brought her foil and held her own with Larry too.

Since a rather cold day in January three years ago, we've had our "Polar Bear Club". We now have our "Mighty Ducks" too, thanks to Linda, who didn't mind missing the snow up north; Jim Despirito, Bob Mahoney and Margie Salach, the only group to play through the rains to finish.

Well done, Paul, leading a team with four women into 2nd place.

Brava to Barbara Rielly for helping to lead her team and get two closest to the pins !

Oh yeah... Mike Doddy made an eagle on his second shot of the day on the par 4, first hole ! What a way to start a round ! He must have been inspired !

What a great way to end 2005.

Many thanks to Fran Parker for hosting our first Christmas Party in her beautiful home and for doing such a wonderful job of organizing everything. Thanks also to Gina Swoope for leading us, as only she could, and getting us all to interact and sing a cavalcade of Christmas songs. We must also pay homage to Gina and Mary Lee Werner, who reminded us that each song had 42 verses too !

Now if only we could figure out how the word 'virgin' appeared in every line that Mike Doddy sang. Thank you Mike for bringing originality into the proceedings.

As always, it was nice to see how good our group looks in clothes. I don't think that any other ASGA chapter can touch us in that department.

For those who found their way home and back to Colony West in the morning, we had a great day to play our "2-person Scramble". Old and new friends joined us from afar, with Bill McLean returning from Scotland; Jerry from Toronto; and Dave from Jacksonville; and in their first outings with us, Peter from Toronto and Jean from Chicago. In fact, Jean was our big winner, with 2 closest to the pins and a straightest drive. Trish, just back from a 2-month vacation in Pinehurst, and Mike had a pretty good day too, taking the team trophy.

Here are the results:

2-person Scramble

1st: "Team Virgin"- Trish Bobbing & Mike Doddy*

2nd: Arlene Rothman & Jerry Caplan*

3rd: Judith Schleifstein & Peter Godfrey*

Low gross: Jean Wiegel, Doug Maran 67

Straightest drive: #9 Jean Wiegel, Ed Boen*

(we need more names on those signs...)

Longest putt: 50' by Peter Godfrey*

4-person Scramble

1st: "Team Hooker"- Beth Hitchcock, Kathy Hoffman, Barbara Walley, Kaspar Anderes.

Thanksgiving is a very special time of the year for me and our group. I am reminded each time we get together how thankful I am that I got involved with this group and for the friends I've made. For this, I will always be thankful.

Pat came all the way from New Jersey to join us again and thanks to Bill, she got there. Leave it to Cathy- only she could've made it to the outing on a shredded tire. Brava ! Congratulations also to Bill, Beth, Kathy and Pat for breaking our scoring record with a net 13 !

Speaking of congratulations... our friend and esteemed former prez of the WPB group, Kevin Raymond, announced his engagement on Thanksgiving eve to Carolyn Rowe, whom he met on an ASGA weekend. All the best to two very nice and deserving people.

A lil reminder that anything is possible at an ASGA outing.

Welcome Al and Jack and we'll hope to see you at some of our outings in the future. It's always nice to see some of our old friends too- let's hope that they come back to visit us again soon.

Barbara Rielly was our star of the day, with low score, closest to two pins and having the longest putt. All this and she needs work on her shoulder !

Other highlights included: Joyce's dancing exhibition at dinner and let's thank Jim and Mike. With the club repainting the 'red tees', Jim and Mike decided to 'show us the way'. Well done, guys !

Our next outing will be a joint event with the WPB chapter at Boca Lago, in Boca Raton, on September 11, at 1pm. The price is $45 for members and $50 for non-members. This is a very nice and challenging, private course just off the turnpike and just south of Glades Road, so it is located right in the middle of Palm Beach and Broward & Dade counties. Dinner afterwards, (optional), will be at the Boca Ale House nearby.

BL Telephone: 561-487-9273

Address: 8665 Juego Way, Boca Raton

Directions: Turnpike to Glades Road. Go west under the overpass and turn left at the first light, Boca Rio Road, (it comes up real fast). Go south to the 2nd light and turn right at the sign into the CC. The turnpike will be on your left. Follow that road and the clubhouse and parking lot will be on your right.

Please excuse life & Katrina for the delay in this mailing. Here's hoping that you will all get through the storm OK. Quite a reminder, again, about how we miss the things that we don't appreciate enough, like air, light, the frig, phones, cable, + ... How fortunate we are when we do have them.

The Parkland event on August 21 is now sold out.

It was another absolutely beautiful Sunday in Hollywood yesterday, especially for the 3 Barbara's on "Barbara Day", who all came in first place, for low score, low team net, and low team gross.

In addition to welcoming two of the Barbara's, Blake and Chuck also made their first appearances memorable leading their team to an 8 under par ! Well done and we'll look forward to seeing all of you again soon.

Next stop on the tour... AUGUST 21 PARKLAND

We're going to play the private, Greg Norman course at Parkland , next to Coral Springs, on August 21, at 12pm. They've limited us to 40 players and 28 have signed up, as of 8/8 . This is the newest course in the area and, if you've played one of his courses, like ChampionsGate in Orlando, you know that you're in for a real treat. Challenging and beautiful... like some people we know. The price is $66 for members and $69 for non-members, (didn't want to break that $70 barrier this year). Get your checks in now... first come, first served.

FYI... Parkland GC now wants a 7-day advance number from us, so please get your checks in by the 15th !

PGC Telephone: 954-753-7737

Address: 10045 Old Club Road, Parkland

Directions: Turnpike or 95 to Sawgrass Expwy. 2 exits to University, where you go North 2 miles. The newly constructed entrance, (in progress), is on your left.

Emerald Dunes, a tough Fazio course, is going private in September and the WPB group is playing there this coming Sunday, August 14, at 1pm; $62, includes food. If you are interested, contact Donna Simmons at dmsimmons1@ and send your check to her., ASAP. We'll be sending a delegation.

What a great day at Doral yesterday. The storms passed us by and buried Ft. Lauderdale. (Reminder- you just never know.) Warming up on the range and giant putting green where Tiger, Phil and all their friends play every March, playing in nearly US Open rough at times, and that island green on 18... makes for quite a memorable day.

OK... show of hands... how many of you made a donation, or two, around that 18th green ? Don't be shy.

Highlights... all our first timers took home hardware yesterday. Welcome to Paul, Roger and Martha from Palm Beach, and Andy and Lisa, who made the drive from Orlando for the weekend; Andy won closest to the pin once, but Lisa, our star for the day, was closest to the pins on three holes ! Brava ! Hey Orlando- are all your "40 handicappers", like Lisa, this good ???

Congratulations and best wishes go out to Barry, on his way to the altar in October, who took the time to play his farewell round with us and led his team to victory in the scramble.

Graduation from ASGA... a goal for many.

Our next stop on the tour is at Hillcrest CC in Hollywood on August 7, at 12:30pm. We always play here in August because, being built on coral, it drains real well. It also has an island green on 18. The price is $47 for members and $54 for non-members. Dinner, optional, will be at the Hollywood Ale House nearby.

FYI...The new Golfsmith store in the Oakwood Shopping Plaza just opened next door to the Ale House and Home Depot. Tell them your with ASGA.

CONGRATULATIONS, KATHY HARTMANN FOR MAKING OUR CHAPTER'S FIRST HOLE-IN-ONE YESTERDAY ON THE 15TH HOLE AT THE DIPLOMAT COUNTRY CLUB IN HALLANDALE !!!!!!!!!!

Apparently, her team, including Kaspar, Rita and Bob played a very inspired round of 8 under par, 64 !!! Bravo !!! It must have been something in the air, as eagles and birdies were flying all day for everyone, with 5 teams within 3 strokes of 2nd place.

Another reminder about SFLA's weather yesterday for all. Even with Hurricane Dennis moving away and an 80% chance of rain forecast, we were most fortunate to play a fine course, in great shape, under pleasantly cloudy conditions, with only a 30-second sprinkle near the end of the round. Everyone who came enjoyed the golf and the dinner afterwards at "Upper Deck", a new sports bar nearby.

Here are the results of the scramble:

1st: Joy Carter, Pat Slagor, Donna Singer, Doug Maran *

2nd: Trish Bobbing, Jon Aluisy, Gina Swoope, Bill Krzaczek

3rd: Suzanne Mesko, Jeff Bager, Sharon Kent, Ken Rogers (tie)

Joy made her first appearance with us and certainly showed that she has 'lots of potential'. A 'joy' to be around too. Ken and Bill, from WPB, joined us for the first time as well and we certainly hope that they'll visit us again sometime soon. Welcome all !

Our next outing on July 24th will be at DORAL, where we'll be playing the GOLD course, with the island green on 18, at 1pm. (Can't promise that we'll get a last minute upgrade to the $265 White course like last year, but you never know; they're expecting to complete their renovation around that time too). The GOLD's renovation has just been completed. The price is $64 for members and $69 for non-members. You get to hit off the same driving range and giant putting green as Tiger, Phil and all their friends did back in March, (included). Dinner afterwards will be at the clubhouse restaurant and bar or at one of the many restaurants/Ale House nearby, (optional).

Please email or call us at 954-435-7333 to confirm and then send your check to:

Whether you joined us for the Marlins game Saturday night/our golf outing at The Diplomat yesterday, thank you all for coming, despite the possibilities. Like all experienced South Floridians know, you plan, you go, you hope for the best, and sometimes you're surprised. Somewhat like dating, we're told.

More importantly, outside of a few of our friends who lost their power this weekend, hopefully we all got through the first hurricane in July in the last 150 years OK. Wouldn't it be nice if it was the last one we saw for a while, a long while?

June ‘05

After all the rains of late, we got a real nice day down at Key Biscayne and found their rather challenging course in pretty good condition. All the iguanas may have helped. When he wasn't zeroing in on every par 3 pin, Tim managed to show us some small reef sharks, which we hadn't seen before. Just adding to the aura of a special place. And only 1 hour from WPB too !

Our next outing is at The Diplomat CC in Hallandale on Sunday, July 10, at 1pm. It's another of our better courses that we can only play in the summer, and you'll like the price too- $47 for members, $52 for non-members. Afterwards, we'll go back to "Gusto's" nearby for dinner, (optional), near the SW corner of Hallandale Beach Blvd. and Federal Highway.

To all of our tennis players... sorry that the weather intervened recently but it was good to hear that many of you got to play and have dinner in Coconut Creek nearby. Thank you Faye Baxter for helping to organize that when the Deer Creek courts were under water. We will try again in the fall when the rains are gone.

****************************************************************

After all the rains, we were quite fortunate to have such a nice day on a great Emerald Hills course, which was in pretty good condition all considered. Hope you enjoyed the "Second Chance" concept too.

On our way to the Hollywood Ale House for the post-game show, we noticed the first "Golfsmith" store in town nearby at the Oakwood Shopping Plaza. They have been selling discount goods online and through their magazine until now. It should be open by July 1st.

And thanks to Bill, who made quite the effort to come and play with his golf bag and suitcase ready to make a flight.

This Saturday evening at 6pm, we'll be having our annual tennis outing at the Deer Creek Racquet Club, across the street from the Deer Creek CC where we play our golf. $15 covers your tennis and BBQ, burgers, dogs and pizza afterwards. We'll play some mixed doubles, allowing our 'pretty good players', including a couple of 4.5's, to play each other, while the rest of us have some fun of our own, rotating every 6 games so that we can get to play with everyone else. Balls will be provided and we have some extra racquets; (you can bring yours too). We'll eat around sundown.

FYI... the fashion police are taking the night off, so if you don't have the latest tennis togs, just do the best you can.

DCRC Telephone: 954-596-5233

Address: 2950 Country Club Blvd., Deerfield Beach

Directions: 95 to Hillsboro west, about 2 miles to Country Club Blvd. Take a right at the light, (if you hit Powerline you went just a bit too far), and you'll find the racquet club sign on your right as you come around the bend, between the townhouses, just before you see the golf club on your left.

Port St. Lucie May ‘05

Thank you for coming from all over the state to join our chapters from Ft. Lauderdale and West Palm Beach for a little getaway over the holiday weekend. We hope that you had fun, on and off the course, and made a few new friends too.

Some of the highlights included: Ellen Butler breaking 90 for the first time; Rich Levy having his cart driving license suspended; a yardage marker on the course, around the 300 yard mark, saying "In your dreams"; and topping it all, was our rather chivalrous Bill Mustin, at the request of his cart mate, Fran Parker, gathering the baby sand hill cranes, (see below), and bringing them back to their parents. National Geographic missed some great footage. Bravo Bill !

What an absolutely beautiful day we had yesterday at Deer Creek. Four formats were played and it looked like everyone had fun. If you liked the place, you can join us again there in October when we return. You'll also be seeing the new group photo we took yesterday on our website soon.

FYI, we've posted our photos from last weekend's dinner at Taverna Opa on the website. You can enjoy them at singlesgolfftl .

Want to prepare for that special dance on your big day ? Paul can help and you can check out his dance partner's website at: .

I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't have a group dance night sometime, or a series of them. We had a number of dancers at Deer Creek. Let us know if you're interested, in any kind of dancing, (don't say break), and we'll see what we can do.

SFLA PGA Golfpass Update: We found out after arriving at Deer Creek that they will be happy to honor them on any day besides event day, when we have arranged a group rate long in advance.

The PGA complex in Port St. Lucie sent us an email over the weekend stating the same concept. Please remember that we do have great rates and guaranteed tee times/shotgun starts.

Some places, like Emerald Hills, have honored them in the past. Be prepared. The true purpose of these passes is to allow us the chance to play nicer courses and in their genuine tournaments for a lot less. They pay for themselves in 1-2 plays and you do get to participate in free clinics, like the one next Saturday morning at Parkland, with Jim McLean, and get free tix to events, like this year's most memorable PGA event at Doral, in which many of us participated.

* *

Memorial Day Weekend update:

48 are signed up as of this afternoon. The resort does have more rooms available and has extended the deadline until next week, May 25. We have found a DJ to work after the BBQ on Sunday night, which may cost us $5 each at the door.

For those of you having difficulty emailing/mailing back the application, all we need is the confirmation and information, which you can list in a simple note. You can come for 1, 2 or 3 days if you like- most will be there for the weekend. We just need to know in advance.

*************************************************************************************************************

Are you ready to start dancing on those table tops again ? With their belly dancers ? We're heading back to "Taverna Opa" this Saturday night at 7pm in FTL. We have the $25 menu ++ and you pay for your own uozo/drinks. Just email or call us at 954-435-7333 to RSVP by FRIDAY 5pm.

Telephone: 954-567-1630

Address: 3051 NE 32nd Ave. Ft. Lauderdale

We heard about the rains, but they never came close yesterday, so we had a very pleasant afternoon at Jacaranda. A big welcome to our newcomers, Suzanne and Lyn, who showed a lot of promise and were certainly very pleasant to be around. If you know of any 4.5 tennis players, Suzanne is looking for someone to play with.

Our next outing is at Deer Creek CC in Deerfield Beach on May 15 at 1230pm. $47 for members and $52 for non-members. Gotta a Golfpass ? Feel free to use it and give us $5 at the door. Please remember that we are limited to the first 64 players that sign up, which we usually get at Deer Creek, so get your checks in early. After their $2 million renovation last fall, you won't want to miss the best public course in the county!

Congrats to Joe Feller for coming in 2nd, missing by one stroke, at last week's SFLA PGA Golfpass tournament at the beautiful, new Parkland GC. Jim Wells was 3'8" from a very difficult pin position and somehow wasn't the closest! Great effort, guys !.

Congratulations to all the great putters of the day. Although they didn't make the 45', 50', or 2 from 54', Sharon and Joyce made fourteen 1-putt greens to lead their team ! But Donna stole the show, taking home 3 prizes, with the help of a member bounce off a tree to win straightest drive. Gotta be good to be lucky ! Brava ladies !

Quite a memorable time for golf we had this past weekend, with Tiger, Phil and the best of the PGA at Doral. And what a show they put on- waiting for the 18th green on Sunday to decide it ! Those of you that went to see it, some thanks to the Golfpass, should be really excited about playing golf again.

Yesterday, on another beautiful day, at Pembroke Lakes CC, we saw some of that enthusiasm on the course, especially from those who went to Doral with our group on Saturday. The great ribs at Stevie B's afterwards, while we watched the finale at Doral, helped to make for a fitting ending to a wonderful weekend.

Note: Some courses don't give the gals a big advantage. PLCC did not. That's why we asked the guys to play from 'Blue', so the gals would have more of a chance to feel like they were contributing. We do understand that the distance from the 'White' is more comfortable for some. Our first goal is to have fun. For those who wish to share in the prizes, we only ask that you follow our instructions for the day and present a completed score card at the end of the round to qualify.

A big thank you to Suzi K and her Sensational Singles Group for hosting a very nice Super Bowl party with our group, at her home on the 9th fairway at Emerald Hills, one of our favorite places to play and the nicest private course in the county. Great fun, good food, nice people and quite a setting for a party !

January 2005

Next Friday, February 4, we will be personally submitting our group order to the SFLA PGA for their 2005 "Golfpass". If you want to qualify for the bonuses, like the free day pass to Doral's Ford Championships and half price pass to the Honda Classic at Mirasol, as well as their next free clinic at the new Parkland GC in May, you need to get your checks to us to get the $30 rate, (instead of the $44 rate for the general public).

FYI... Doral has already signed 7 of the top 10 to play this year. Tiger could make it 8.

In addition to the discounts you get to play all over SFLA, Golfpass members can play in real tournaments, at very nice courses, at greatly discounted prices, from May - October, You can also use this pass at some of our events and possibly on our trips to Naples and Port St. Lucie.

We currently have checks for 18 of the 25 that we need to qualify. For those of you who have already sent your checks in, please make sure that we have your address and telephone numbers for each pass that you've ordered.

Otherwise, please send your checks to:

ASGA-FTL, 1201 SW 141 Ave. #104 Pembroke Pines 33027

Repair the course, of course!

In recognition of the divot-ridden fairways at golf courses around the world, we dedicate this instruction article to our good friends in the maintenance shed! They are up at three o'clock every morning trying to keep our fairways lush and inviting (not that we ever use the fairway).

It's relatively simple course etiquette. It takes just a few moments to adjust the real estate you have marred.

Here are some simple tips for you to remember.

After striking your ball off the tee or ground, be sure to:

Replace the divot you chunked up

Pick up your tee

After striking a shot out of the fairway, rough, hazard or other solid ground on which your shot may have fallen, replace your divot with the sand provided, and using your foot, firm up said sand and flatten it to level ground.

When hitting from a sand trap, bring the rake out of your cart, use the rake in the bunker or at the very least brush the sand even with your spikes. Bad karma will come back to haunt you if don't live cleanly!

Put a divot tool in your pocket before each round. If you don't have one, then borrow one. Your marks on the green, should you hit it, are the most virus-prone part of the golf course. They will also interrupt putts and increase greens fees should you leave them and force the golf course staff to deal with them.

Of course, these little tips are not the beginning and end of golf course maintenance, but if you have these down pat while you are on the course, then at least you're a leg up on Joe Duffer. Don't forget, though, that your responsibility is not limited to you but extends to every golfer in your group. Next time play with a woman. An informal survey of golf pros reveals that women seem to care and acknowledge these little nuggets of wisdom better than men, on the whole.

Please let us know if you are attending, so that we can put you at our 2 designated tables; if you are looking for a roommate, ; or if you are looking for someone to share the ride up and back. No sense in 20 cars bringing 20 people.

By the way, there were still a few spots open yesterday afternoon. Call 1-888-GOLFMATE if you are interested.

Our annual dinner will be on JANUARY 8, at Buca di Beppo, in Ft. Lauderdale, starting at 7pm. The price for dinner is $19++. The drinks are yours. It was a fun evening earlier this year and we're hoping for more of the same real soon. You don't have to pay in advance, but you do have to let us know if you are coming , so that the place is ready for us. Just call us at 954-435-7333 or email us to confirm. Your friends are most welcome too.

Our first outing for 2005 will be at Bonaventure CC in Weston on JANUARY 23, at 1pm. The price is $59, which includes dinnerin their clubhouse. We're working on a fun and quick format for the day, to beat the darkness, so if you have any good ideas, please pass them on.

As always, please call or email us to confirm and then send your check to:

What a beautiful day we had at Deer Creek yesterday. I don't think that the weather can get any better. It was good to see everyone having fun on the newly renovated course and at "The Grill" afterwards.

Thanks to Veronica & Bruce from , who have not only joined us to play, win prizes, and have been a great addition to our group, but were kind enough to donate polo shirts and golf towels to our winning teams.

This week, Janis, Sherry and Brenda came out and helped bring home the 2nd place trophy. Of course, Janis was also busy taking home two closest to the pin prizes too. Well done, Janis ! Pat Emler and Sharon Kelly joined us from Kansas City and took home our 'farthest from the 1st tee award'. Greg Hall, Tampa's golf chair and his better half, Lynn Cunningham, (she cheers for the better baseball team), came for the day and helped to take home the first prize.

It was quite a day at The Diplomat in Hallandale on Sunday. Thankfully, the rains held off long enough for us to almost finish the round. Apparently, we have a lot of gentlemen in our group. They all approached the greens... noticed that the club had only put out 1 sign, instead of 2... and they graciously allowed the women to take all the prizes home. Extra points to "Dr. John" for at least putting his name on one sign.

In the future, please feel free to pick up your cell phones and call the proshop, whose number is usually on our scorecards, and inform them that we need two signs on each contest hole.

Now, here's the real test. If any of you guys got close to one of the pins, could you please inform us and we will try to select some winners, out of a hat if necessary.

Here's hoping that all of our first timers had fun and will come back to join us again. It was good to see our friends from Penn State and we'll look forward to seeing them again too.

Here’s a little food for thought from a golf publication …

A little faster, pretty please...

Survey says, number one golf complaint, takes too long. It's torture to either be in or behind a group that takes 5 plus hours to play 18 holes. There are steps that all players can take to complete a round in a more reasonable time.

Even though rules state that the person with the lowest score from the prior hole tees off first, and that the person furthest from the hole goes first, "ready golf" is acceptable etiquette within safety guidelines, of course. Unless you're in a tournament, there is no reason why you can't tee off first if you're the first to the tee. It's always good to talk this over beforehand and make sure your playing partners agree.

Write your scores down on the scorecard in the cart or at the next tee, not on the green you just finished.

Same thing with headcovers, put them on in the cart and put the club in the bag on exiting the cart prior to your next shot. The pageantry of replacing the head cover as practiced by some golfers can drive you nuts.

If two to a cart, drop the rider off at their ball and have the driver proceed to his/her ball.

Always take enough clubs for the shot that might be encountered. If you think it's a 7-iron into the green, take your 6, 7, and 8-iron with you.

When near the green, drop off the person furthest from the hole first, then go park the cart on the cart path near the green.

When near the green, take your putter, as well as your wedge.

Always carry a second ball in your pocket just in case you lose the original ball or need to hit a provisional ball. It saves the time that would be wasted going back to your cart to dig another ball out of your bag.

Try to remember at least approximately where you hit the ball.

If you can't find the ball rather quickly, drop and press on.

Golf is golf, fishing is fishing, on busy days, leave the ball retriever at home and press on. Heck a ball retriever, might as well bring scuba gear if fishing balls is your thing!

No more than two practice swings.

Develop a quick routine, not a quick swing.

Don't try your pick-up lines on the cart girl, wastes time and you have a much better chance of making an eagle.

July 2004

What a great day we had at Doral ! Through all kinds of weather, we got to play the "Great White" and had lots of fun. Those who stayed for the BBQ, dinner and the fireworks had even more. Doral should become a fixture on our annual schedule.

2nd: Carole Clark, Michael Rec, Dale Moses, Dave Lessin

Schamble:

June 2004

Thank you all for making this weekend so much fun. We hope that you liked the golf, food, hotel and the company as much as we did. The warmth we felt in Naples certainly makes our coastal weather seem much cooler. We'll try to make our future west coast swings in the late spring or early fall.

Here are yesterday's results from the Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club:

Closest to the pin: #3 Renee Roulo, Richard Leckey

#7 Renee Roulo, Mike Doddy

#11 Trish Bobbing, Mike Doddy

Longest drive: Sharon Kent & Teresa Cook, (tie); Bob Lascher

Low scores: Donna Singer & Trish Bobbing, (tie); Al Carozza

Renee, it was a pleasure to meet you and thank you for bringing your charm and being an inspiration to us all.

Our thanks also have to go out to all the fathers who came to play on their day and to Trish, who despite all kinds of car trouble going to, and from, Naples, managed to come, bring the party, and take home all of our prizes.

Best wishes also to Donna, who, with Mike's assistance, won every race and chicken fight in the pool and nearly broke that magic 100 mark for the first time, and Kathy and Bob.

Again, thank you all for making it such a great weekend and we'll hope to see you again soon.

A lil something from our mailbag …

"The Unsinkable Molly Brown" aka Carol Clark's story

One of Golf’s Valuable Lessons on golf cart management:

ALWAYS ENGAGE THE PARKING BRAKE AND KEEP FRONT WHEELS TURNED AWAY FROM WATER HAZARDS!!!

On a recent Sunday afternoon Carol Clark and I played in an ASGA (American Singles Golf Association) golf tournament at Pembroke Lakes golf course. While putting on hole # 5 Carol’s cart partner (a man) noticed that their golf cart was moving. He said “Who is taking our golf cart”? With that, we realized that no one was taking it, but indeed it was slowly rolling toward the canal all by itself! Sadly, the cart submerged nose first in about 4-5 feet of water. Apparently the gentleman neglected to engage the parking brake.

We quickly called the Pro Shop and two men came out and retrieved the clubs off of the cart. Needless to say, the golf bags and clubs were very soggy, as was Carol golf purse which was totally submerged in the water. Carol, being the classy and cool woman that she is did not flinch. She simply emptied the water from the golf bag and her purse and we continued on to finish the round! We actually came in third place.

Hat’s off to Carol for keeping a calm, collected persona under such stressful conditions!!!

Pat Slagor

Wildlife Warning For Golfers

The Montana State Department of Fish and Wildlife is advising golfers to take extra precautions and be on the alert for bears while in the Gallatin, Helena and Lewis and Clark National Forests golf courses.

They advise golfers to wear noise-producing devices such as little bells on their clothing to alert, but not startle the bears unexpectedly.

They also advise you to carry pepper spray in case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch for signs of bear activity.

Golfers should be able to recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear droppings on the golf course. Black bear droppings are smaller and contain berries and possibly squirrel fur.

Grizzly bear droppings have bells in them and smell like pepper spray.
