Betaglucare

Betaglucare Q & A for Healthcare ProfessionalsWhat is Betaglucare?Betaglucare is a self-care product for managing cholesterol and blood glucose levels, supported by extensive clinical science.Function – What effect does it have?Betaglucare reduces LDL cholesterol by binding with bile to reduce cholesterol re-absorption4Betaglucare also reduces postprandial blood glucose levels by slowing digestion of carbohydrates5, 6What makes Betaglucare different from oats? The oat in Betaglucare is sourced from Scandinavia as the temperate climate in this region is ideal for growing quality oats containing high molecular weight beta-glucan. As a soluble fibre, beta-glucan forms a highly viscous gel when consumed along with liquid. It’s this viscosity that directly influences its efficacy in both reducing cholesterol re-absorption and in delaying the uptake of carbohydrates when consumed along with meals. Betaglucare is processed in such a way that the starch content reduces from 70% to 10% and is therefore a very low GI food in its own right (GI<10).Cholesterol ManagementIn order to gain the desired effects*, one full sachet should be eaten daily, preferably at breakfast and with fluidSuggested ways of consumption: Crisp Oat Hearts: as a meal in itself with milk, add fresh fruit or yoghurt or combine with existing breakfast cereal.Oat Powder: Blended into a smoothie with low fat milk, yoghurt and fruit or added to breakfast cereal.*when eaten daily in the required amount of 3g as part of a healthy diet low in saturated fat.Should I keep taking my cholesterol medication with Betaglucare?Betaglucare is complementary to medications and as such we recommend introducing Betaglucare to the daily diet whilst maintaining existing dosages of medications. It takes approximately 8 weeks for the results to become evident at which point we recommend a blood test and review of prescription medication dosages. Along with lifestyle changes, regular daily consumption of Betaglucare can assist in avoiding progression to prescription medications. How much will it reduce my LDL cholesterol?LDL reductions are in the order of 10-15%, however a more recent study1 determined beta-glucan which is high in molecular weight will deliver 50% to 100% greater reductions than the 10% to 15% reported in earlier studies3 .This is in addition to any other medications/lifestyle changes. How long does it take to reduce my LDL cholesterol? We recommend daily consumption over a minimum 8 weeks before having a cholesterol test.Blood Glucose ManagementThe gel formation creates a lining on the intestinal walls to delay the uptake of carbohydrates from accompanying foods*. It’s therefore necessary to consume it either immediately before or along with meals. Both crisp hearts and oat powder versions contain the same amount of bio-active beta-glucan (3gms). Methods of consumption are as outlined above however the powder form is more suited for postprandial blood glucose management as it is more easily consumed as an accompaniment to major meals in the form of a smoothie.Patients can test themselves two hours after the meal to see the effect on their blood glucose levels. **when 4g of beta-glucan is eaten along with 30g – 80g of carbohydrates How much will it reduce my postprandial blood glucose levels? Results depend on the amount of carbohydrates in the total meal. Studies have indicated a 36% reduction in postprandial blood glucose levels2Side effects:Some patients may experience mild bloating and increased regularity because of the high fibre content (19.4% DI powder & 19.7% DI hearts). Any symptoms are usually mild and diminish within a week with adequate fluid intake. They can then increase their daily portions gradually until they reach a full sachet. Does Betaglucare have any interaction with medications? There are no known interactions with medications.Does it contain Gluten?Oats contain gluten (Avenin) and may not be suitable for patients on a gluten-free diet.Packaging and pricing:28 daily sachets = 4 weeks supply per box (Hearts and Powder) average RRP is $39 or $1.40 per daily sachet.IngredientsCrisp Hearts: Oat bran (100%) rich in beta-glucan from Scandinavian oats.Powder: Oat bran (100%) extra fine powder rich in beta-glucan from Scandinavian oats.Nutrition Information: (per serving)Oat HeartsPowderEnergy kJ366.75176Protein g5.12.8Total Carbohydrate g 11.5 3.1Sugars g0.40Total Fat g1.00.7- Saturated Fat g0.20.1- Unsaturated Fat g0.9-Dietary Fibre g5.96.2Beta-glucan g3.03.0Sodium g00References:1 Whitehead A et al.
