isaac nears haiti's quake homeless

By TRENTON DANIEL Associated Press

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- Tropical Storm Isaac strengthened as it swirled toward vulnerable Haiti on Friday evening, threatening to bring punishing rains to people still without homes after the 2010

earthquake, but unlikely to gain enough steam to strike as a hurricane.

Forecasters expected the storm to stay below hurricane force until it reached the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday, and they shifted the projected track back eastward where it re-

mained a threat to Tampa, Fla., where the Republican National Convention starts Monday.

In Haiti, the government and international aid groups were prepared to evacuate several thousand people from settlement camps that sprang up in the aftermath of the earth-

quake but there were few takers.

Isaac was expected to dump up to eight to 12 inches of rain on the island of Hispaniola, which is shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Haiti is heavily deforested and just a few hours of steady rain can

trigger deadly mudslides. "That kind of rain is going

to cause some life-threatening flash floods and mudslides," said Dennis Feltgen, a spokesman for the U.S. Hurricane Center in Miami.

Isaac was centered about 100 miles south-southeast of

Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital, Friday evening, and its maximum sustained winds had increased to 65 mph. It was moving west at 16 mph. Tropical force winds extended nearly 200 miles from the storm's center.

ner Michael Head said. Tucker said the police de-

partment received a call about 5:37 a.m. that the bodies were in the driveway of a home on South Third Street.

Head said Gowens was pronounced dead at the scene and Leatherwood was taken to a hospital, where she died.

Tucker said autopsy results are pending and the investigation into the shooting is continuing.

University of Alabama apologizes to baker

Woman had

been threatened

with legal action

By PATRIcK RuPINsKI Halifax Media Group

TUSCALOOSA -- The University of Alabama on Thursday apologized to a Tuscaloosa baker who received a letter threatening legal action because some of her handdecorated cakes and cookies carried UA-related images.

"UA has talked to Ms. (Mary) Cesar and has apologized for the letter, which is not consistent with the protocol we normally follow for local vendors on trademark issues," said a statement released Thursday afternoon by Deborah M. Lane, UA assistant vice president for university relations.

"We have assured Ms. Cesar that we will work with her to resolve this issue quickly and amicably so that she can continue to produce pastries that bear the university's marks.

"We will also make sure

that everyone involved in the licensing process is fully aware of UA's long-standing communications practices and concerns when dealing with local merchants."

Cesar is owner of Mary's Cakes & Pastries in downtown Northport. The bakery is known for its customized cakes, but it also sells freshbaked pastries and iced and decorated form-cut cookies. During the last three to four years, its cookies, especially during the football season, have included hats with a houndstooth-like icing pattern, footballs and elephants with the letter "A." Some customers also ordered cakes decorated with a Crimson Tide theme.

On Tuesday, Cesar received a cease-and-desist letter from Collegiate Licensing Co. in Atlanta, ordering her to stop selling the products. Collegiate Licensing represents UA in licensing the use of UA trademarks and logos on commercial products. It also monitors the use of those trademarks.

family donates artifacts to Etowah historical Society

Zerah Lyle Appleton's memory is alive and well through her love letters, photos and other mementos. Members of the Etowah County Historical Society on Thursday received a gift of Zerah Appleton's belongings to put on permanent display in its office in the Elliot Community Center in Gadsden from Sue Appleton, the wife of Zerah's late third cousin, Jerry.

The Appleton Collection, as historical society members call it, includes letters, photos, smalls drawings and even a playbill that belonged to Zerah Appleton, the feisty daughter of Dr. Hugh Lounge Appleton and his wife, Lilly.

The family lived in Gadsden beginning in the early 1900s. Zerah drove the first car across the Memorial Bridge

and reportedly had a fire truck named for her.

Sue Appleton, of Jasper, Ga., also had ledger books dating from 1906 to 1933 from Dr. Appleton's medical practice, which was on Broad Street. She said it was interesting to see his patient list and to see what he charged for services.

She's a genealogist and often tries to get the items she finds to family members when she can. She felt it was important these items get back to Gadsden.

"I am very happy to be able to present this to you and hope you will enjoy digging through all this," Appleton told historical society members Thursday afternoon.

Artie Morgan said Zerah, portrayed by Sheila Freeman, is one of the favorite people represented during the annual "A Walk Through Time," a fundraiser for the preservation of Forrest Cemetery where

actors play notable Gadsden residents who are buried in the cemetery.

"This will let us know what she was like, who she was and where she was in her life," said Morgan, co-founder of "A Walk Through Time."

Morgan said she had searched online for information about Zerah and found Sue Appleton's genealogy website. Sue said she had gotten the artifacts after a man who bought a trunk filled with the items at an estate sale in Jacksonville, Fla., contacted her, and she decided to contact Morgan, who then called Historical Society President Danny Crownover about the items.

Crownover said the historical society will digitize a lot of the materials so people can see the artifacts with less handling and they can make copies for their records. The materials then will be placed in a display case.
