Some surgeries, pioneered at UC San Diego Health, do not require even a single incision — and can be performed through the mouth with no scars or external stitches. Jacobs Medical Center is one of just a handful of hospitals in the country to offer specially designed imaging suites, where patients remain in the operating room while MRI and CT scans are performed. In many cases, multiple technologies are integrated into a single view inside the operating room to offer the entire surgical team incomparable internal perspectives of the body and surgical field. Critical information such as the location of tumors, arteries, vessels, and individual nerve fibers can be seen and safely navigated. These imaging capabilities will reduce the length of surgeries and help ensure that tumors are completely removed so that patients can safely begin recovery more quickly.Inside the operating rooms, special sound and light systems have been designed to calm and reassure the patient. Bathed in comforting tinted light from the time they go to sleep to when they wake up, patients can also hear different soundscapes to soothe the mind.Cancer Care at Jacobs Medical Center (Floors 4-6)B-roll video file: Cancer-B-roll-video-JMC.mp4Finished tour video file: Cancer-finished-tour-video-JMC.movDescription: The fourth and fifth floors of Jacobs Medical Center provide a multidisciplinary team approach to cancer care. These teams include specialists from a variety of disciplines such as surgeons, medical oncologists, symptom management specialists, and social workers. The air on the entire sixth floor is positively pressurized and specially filtered to help reduce the risk of infection for blood and marrow transplant patients. This extraordinary advancement in care gives patients freedom of movement to leave their hospital room, walk around open areas. The floor includes a gym, which will also serve as a place for patients to strengthen their muscles with exercises and their minds through social interaction. Traditionally, for blood and marrow transplant patients only left their hospital room for short periods of time and had to wear a mask. The cancer care floors at Jacobs Medical Center will also build on advanced tools to deliver personalized cancer care and promising investigational treatments such as T and NK cell therapies that harness a patient’s own immune system to work harder and smarter against cancer cells, or stem cell therapies that can cure some aggressive blood cancers. More than 170 treatment trials are open at Moores Cancer Center, helping patients access the most promising anti-cancer treatments here and in our clinics. Women and Infants Care at Jacobs Medical Center (Floors 8-10)B-roll video file: Women-Infants-B-roll-video-JMC.mp4Finished tour video file: Women-Infants-finished-tour-video-JMC.movDescription:On the tenth and topmost floor, recovering mothers will hold their babies during the first hours of life while looking at the best view in the hospital. Our 32 spacious postpartum rooms are a place where new moms and their families can enjoy amenities like fold-out guest beds and state-of-the-art technology nested in a modern home setting. Family members have access to comfortable family lounges throughout the floors and a play area for big brothers and sisters visiting their new siblings. UC San Diego Health provides the most birth options in San Diego, doing everything we can to honor women’s preferences and choices. The ninth floor houses eight private labor and delivery rooms with ocean views and three operating rooms for cesarean births. There are also three birth center rooms to support a childbirth experience with little to no pain medication. Mothers have the option of various labor techniques, including a built-in tub in each room for hydrotherapy or access to our volunteer doula program, the only one of its kind in San Diego. In addition, we are the only hospital west of the Rockies with an in-hospital birth center staffed by midwives. Should medical issues arise during labor or delivery, life-saving interventions are just steps away, including a specialized resuscitation room for newborns needing additional assistance. The 52-bed, level III neonatal intensive care unit on the eighth floor of Jacobs Medical Center has private rooms for our most critically ill babies. This encourages best practices to reduce infection in this fragile patient population and nurtures a safe environment for parents to touch and hold their infants, which is a critical part of the bonding and recovery process.Overview: Welcome to Jacobs Medical Center Finished tour video file: Welcome-to-JMC.movDescription:The 10-story, 509,500-square-foot Jacobs Medical Center features leading-edge surgical services, cancer care, clinical trials, birthing options and more.
