PLASTIC FREE SCHOOOLS 2019ASSEMBLY SCRIPT, STATS AND TIPSSLIDE 1 – INSPIRING INTRODUCTIONSSAS SCRIPTINTRODUCE YOURSELF – For example if you are a volunteer, tell the story of why you donate your time to protect the places you love.INTRODUCE SURFERS AGAINST SEWAGE (SAS) - SAS is a national marine conservation and campaigning charity that inspires, unites and empowers communities to take action to protect oceans, beaches, waves and wildlifeWHAT IS PLASTIC FREE SCHOOLS I HEAR YOU CRY? PLASTIC FREE SCHOOLS IS A SYSTEM SHAKING, CHANGE MAKING PUPIL LED EDUCATION PROGRAMME. This ground-breaking programme equips and empowers young activists with the tools to create positive, lasting environmental change. Plastic Free Schools is a positive, investigative, action-packed vision for stopping plastic pollution at source. The programme will empower pupils to not only tackle unnecessary single-use plastics in their school but inspire Industry and Government to make positive strategic steps in the same direction.SLIDE 2 - PLASTIC POLLUTION CRISISSAS PROP TIP! It can be both shocking and entertaining to empty a bucket of litter that you’ve removed from a beach that morning here.SAS SCRIPTThis is Perranporth beach in Cornwall, SAS’s local beach.Sadly, when it comes to plastic pollution this could be any beach in the UK, or the World!WHAT’S YOUR WHY? ICEBREAKER INTERACTIVE – SAS TIP – GET EM MOVING!Hands up (and keep them up) - Who does what? Surfs, plays sport, climbs trees {hands, feet, elbows, toes, in the air}What do all of these activities have in common? Answer: they are all outdoors and that is what we are here to protectHonesty Corner! Who is responsible? We are all responsible for the plastic pollution problem, both as individuals and communities. We can all make small changes to our lives that have a big impact on the wellbeing of our community and our environment. Our aim is to tell you a bit more about the problems of litter and what role you can play in the story of litter in your local environment. FOR EVERY PROBLEM THERE IS A SOLUTION - We are going to talk about some things that may be a bit upsetting. We’re also going to learn some facts that seem so HUGE that it will feel like there’s nothing that can be done. BUT! Never fear, there is always something that can be done and after learning about the problems that our oceans are facing we’re going to learn what WE can do to tackle them together. We are NOT here to simply wallow in doomNo! We have come to offer some SUSTAINABLE – ACHIEVABLE – SOLUTIONSSolutions that can halt the flow of plastic into our oceans.Oh and just so you don’t feel ambushed later! I’m here to ask for your help SAS SHOUT - POWER TO THE PUPILS! IT’S UP TO YOU!SLIDE 3 - KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!SAS SCRIPTPLASTIC POLLUTION FACTS – KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!From plastic pollution to habitat degradation and overfishing to climate change, the health of our oceans is extraordinarily fragile. There’s a time and a place for stats and this is it! “People protect what they love. But they only love what they know” - Jacques CousteauSAS PROP TIP - A great way to bring each of these alive is to head to your favourite beach (on the day of the talk really resonates) and ‘go shopping’ for the litter items that you’ll be discussing.SAS TIP – If you can reel these off with props and/or images then it really does build a sense of momentum.PLASTIC POLLUTION IS EVERYWHEREPlastic pollution can now be found on every beach in the world, from busy tourist beaches to uninhabited, tropical islands nowhere is safe.Scientists have recently discovered micro plastics embedded deep in the Arctic ice. There is even plastic pollution on the moon! Left behind after the one of the Apollo Moon Landings between 1960 and 1972.In 1950, the world’s population of 2.5 billion produced 1.5 million tons of plastic; in 2016, a global population of more than 7 billion people produced over 320 million tons of plastic. This is set to double by 2034.Plastics consistently make up 60 to 90% of all marine debris studied in the world.Plastics make up 70% of all litter in the UK, the majority of which ends up in the seas. The density of plastic litter found on UK beaches increased by 146% between 1994 and 2008.Approximately 8 million pieces of plastic pollution find their way into our oceans every day.Over 12 million tonnes of plastic flow into our oceans each year. There may now be around 5.25 trillion - macro and micro plastic - pieces floating in the open ocean. Of that mass, 269,000 tons floats on the surface (equivalent to 1492 Blue Whales at 181 tonnes each).Four billion plastic microfibers per square kilometre litter the deep sea.Plastic doesn’t disappear it just breaks down into smaller and smaller plastic pieces that accumulate in our oceans and become a danger to marine life.Once in the ocean plastic can accumulate toxins naturally present in the environment, and can potentially release toxins incorporated at the point of manufacture, becoming toxic bombs! There are now approximately 5000 items of plastic litter for every mile of UK beachesIn 2016 over 150 plastic bottles were found per mile of UK beaches.A plastic bottle can take up to 450 years to break down in the marine environment.INTERACTIVE - HOW LONG UNTIL IT’S GONE? SAS PROP TIP - Use an example of a plastic bottle and an apple (it is great to bring them in as props)SAS TIP – TAKE A BIG BITE OUT OF THE APPLE AND THEN DROP IT ONTO THE FLOOR - Ask pupils how long until it’s gone!? What biological process is taking place?TAKEAWAY FACT – The apple is used by life for life!SAS TIP - DROP THE PLASTIC BOTTLE ONTO THE FLOOR - Ask pupils how long until it’s gone!? [A plastic bottle can last for 450 years in the marine environment, slowly fragmenting into smaller and smaller pieces which eventually end up microscopic but never truly go away.TAKEAWAY FACT – Doing nothing but harm to life!TAKEAWAY FACT - This means that every piece of plastic that has ever been produced is still with us in some form!In the UK we use approximately 35 million single use bottles each day – 12 Billion per yearRecent studies have revealed marine plastic pollution in 100% of marine turtles, 59% of whales, 36% of seals and 40% of seabird species examined100,000 marine mammals and turtles and 1 million sea birds are killed by marine plastic pollution annuallyMarine litter kills over 100,000 marine mammals and turtles and 1 million sea birds each year through ingestion and entanglement.ILLUSTRATIVE INTERCATIVE STORY – Tessa the turtle and the carrier bag. SAS PROP TIP – Have a carrier bag handy for thisASK PUPILS to imagine they are hungry turtles swimming around the ocean searching for their favourite food jelly fish.PLASTIC CONFUSION! As our oceans fill with plastics many animals are confusing our waste for food which causes a multitude of problems640,000 tonnes of lost or discarded fishing gear (known as ghost gear) enter the world’s oceans each yearGhost gear kills at least 136,000 seals, sea lions and large whales every year worldwide.SAS SCRIPT - REMEMBER WE PROMISED IT’S NOT ALLL DOOM AND GLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!The problem is pretty huge yes? Hands up if you’re feeling a bit sad and overwhelmed?? Maybe you’re even feeling like it’s not even worth trying to help!???Well the first fact to remember is that the vast majority of this plastic pollution consists of single-use, throwaway items.Secondly, do you agree that the situation that we’re in has come about because of trillions of small, careless actions? Well isn’t it then possible that we can solve it by taking trillions of small CARE FULL! actions? In short, if all 7 billion of us just do our bit then we’ve got a great chance.Shall we get cracking? ARE YOU READY?Let’s eliminate single-use plastic together – ARE YOU READY!?Overview of Plastic Free Schools Programme: To achieve Plastic Free Schools status schools will have to work towards five objectives.SLIDE 7 – YOUR PLASTIC FREE SCHOOLS JOURNEYOBJECTIVE ONE: ACTION PLAN –?It is time to resist this plastic flood. If you don’t act who on earth will? STEP 1: CREATE YOUR PLASTIC FREE SCHOOLS ACTION GROUPSTEP 2: HOLD A PLASTIC FREE SCHOOL MEETINGSTEP 3: ANNOUNCE YOUR PLASTIC FREE PLAN IN SCHOOL ASSEMBLYOBJECTIVE TWO: TRASH MOB! –?Before we can tackle single-use plastic we need to understand what plastics are polluting our playgrounds. We can do this by organising a TRASH MOB! A TRASH MOB is a quick fire, high energy, litter at your school.OBJECTIVE THREE: CHALLENGING GOVERNMENT – Never underestimate the power of your voice. Using everything you have learnt so far, write a letter to your local MP. ?Your local MP has been chosen to represent YOU and the community you live in. Let’s put them to work and ask for their support!OBJECTIVE FOUR: CHALLENGING INDUSTRY –?Industry spends a lot of time and money making themselves and their products look good. More often than not it is the branded products that we find littering our playgrounds, streets, woodlands, and beaches. It’s time they stepped up and took their share of the responsibility.OBJECTIVE FIVE: CHALLENGING YOURSELVES – Creating a plastic-free legacy at your school. Your collective actions will already be sending a powerful message to the rest of your school and beyond. Now to make sure this positive change is here to stay your school needs to make 3 commitments.SLIDE 8 – SIGN YOUR SCHOOL UP TODAY! THANK YOU. ................
