OCLC Direct Request
Basic Information regarding OCLC Direct Requests
When an ILL request cannot be fulfilled via Aleph, the OCLC-Direct supplier can be used to automatically transfer the request to the library’s OCLC review file in the Resource Sharing tab of WorldCat. All subsequent updating (receiving, returning, etc.) must then be done manually in the Aleph system as per the results in OCLC.
One time set-up: Notify the ODIN office of your intention to use the OCLC Direct Request process so server configuration can take place.
Day to day workflow:
1. If the request is to be sent to OCLC, the OCLC-DIRECT lender should be added to the list of potential suppliers via the Add Supplier button.

2. When the borrowing request arrives at the OCLC-DIRECT supplier, a request is automatically generated and put in the borrowing library’s review file in the Resource Sharing tab of WorldCat. Process in OCLC as per usual.

3. When the item arrives at your library, process it in OCLC as per usual. Then go to the Aleph ILL module, retrieve the record, and click ‘Receive’ to update it in Aleph. Note the record will maintain a status of ‘Sent to Supplier’ until the ‘Receive’ is conducted. Once the record is received, handle it as you would any request (i.e. checking it out to the patron via Circulation, etc.). Additionally, if an item is renewed, dates in Aleph will need to be changed manually.

4. When the patron returns the item to your library, do any Circulation processing necessary (i.e. checking it in). Then go to the Aleph ILL module, retrieve the record, and click ‘Return’ to update it in Aleph. The record will automatically go to the ‘Closed’ status. At this point, go to OCLC and process the return as per usual there.
