This is an advanced course based upon the previous knowledge of pharmacology that the nurse obtained in their undergraduate education and from their clinical practice. This course meets the law, ethics, and fiscal requirements for prescriptive privileges in the State of Ohio including Schedule II prescribing requirements. VoiceThread is a totally web-based application that allows the placement of collections of media like images, videos, documents, and presentations at the center of an asynchronous conversation. A VoiceThread allows students to have conversations and to make comments using any mix of text, a microphone, a web cam, a telephone, or uploaded audio file. Instructions for establishing an account, and the functions of Voice Thread are posted in the Carmen course site under “Course Materials.”I-PEER: an open source web-based program used for peer feedback/review in an assignment context.Conduct of the Course:Content Modules: Course material will be organized in weekly modules. The week is defined as beginning Monday at 8:00 am and closes the following Sunday evening at 10:00pm. A Panopto recording will introduce the module content and plan for study. Assignments for each week will be posted on Carmen under “Content” labeled as “Weekly Assignments” with detail including objectives, readings, cases and activities designed for learning. Seminar: One two-and one half (2.5) hour session in-class on Monday mornings from 9:00-11:30am on dates scheduled. The FNP on line section will meet synchronously via Carmen Connect on Monday evenings from 6:30pm -9:00pm on dates scheduled. The Peds/Acute Care Peds section will meet synchronously via Carmen Connect Tuesday mornings 9:00- 11:30 am on dates scheduled.*See Appendix A for the schedule of seminar meeting dates for all sections.Seminar will be conducted using a team based learning approach. Students will prepare for seminar by completing the week’s assignments, and then process/apply key concepts in assigned teams to enhance critical thinking.Learning Activities:Clinical case studies will be the basis for study and application of pharmaco-therapeutic treatment plans using the Rational Prescribing Process. Case studies including on-line, unfolding case studies will implement an analytical framework for pharmacotherapeutics and fulfill the Advance Practice Registered Nurse/CNL roles including care coordination.Discussions will be used to formulate drug treatment plans with emphasis on decision making with supportive rationale will be accomplished using a variety of team based methodologies. Other activities to reinforce learning of the materials, or provide perspective and context for concepts may be utilized.Peer Evaluation: Students will conduct peer review on designated assignments using I-Peer. Exams: Midterm Exam #1: Feb 15th/16th administered during scheduled seminar session Testing Method: Students will take this exam individually without resource materials. After completion, students will assemble in assigned groups for a retake. One answer sheet will be scored for each group based on consensus best answer. Each student’s grade for the midterm will be calculated using 85% of the individual’s score and 15% of their team score. *The use of any resource materials during testing is prohibited. 15%Weekly Quizzes: beginning week #6 of the semester through Week #13Short Carmen based quizzes will follow the assigned reading and activities each week. Quizzes will be available during the class week period. (Monday 8:00am through the following Sunday 10:00pm.Each quiz will be timed allowing 1 minute per question.Each student will take each quiz individually, having 2 attempts, with the highest score achieved used for course grade calculation.The final quiz grade will be calculated based on the highest 7 scores out of the 8 quizzes.The lowest quiz score will be automatically dropped from the calculation. 10%FINAL Exam: Scheduled during finals week on Friday, April 29th 10:00am-12:00noon. Any cell phones, pagers or other communication devices must be turned off and stored out of sight (book bag, purse, etc). No cell phones, pagers or any other type of communication device will be allowed on the student during any exam. Cell Phone and E-transmission PolicyThe use of cell phones for calls or texting is prohibited during class/seminar/clinical with the exception of break times. Students who need to have a cell phone on for emergency purposes should discuss the issue with the designated faculty course head. Students found in violation of this policy should be aware faculty has the option of lowering the course grade and/or reporting the violation to the academic/professional misconduct committee chair. Taking pictures of the College of Nursing/College of Nursing property, clinical sites, and patients using ANY device are prohibited without the written consent of the institution and all parties involved.Please be aware that electronic transmission of data related to patient specific identifiers and student to student health information obtained in physical assessment labs with student identifiers is a violation of HIPAA. ................
