Alaska has a MEDICAL MARIJUANA (cannabis) LAW

SUMMARY: Fifty-eight percent of voters approved Ballot Measure #8 on November 3, 1998. The law took effect on March 4, 1999. It removes state-level criminal penalties on the use, possession and cultivation of marijuana by patients who possess written documentation from their physician advising that they "might benefit from the medical use of marijuana."

Approved Conditions: Patients diagnosed with the following illnesses are afforded legal protection under this act: cachexia; cancer; chronic pain; epilepsy and other disorders characterized by seizures; glaucoma; HIV or AIDS; multiple sclerosis and other disorders characterized by muscle spasticity; and nausea. Other conditions are subject to approval by the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services. Patients (or their primary caregivers) may legally possess no more than one ounce of usable marijuana, and may cultivate no more than six marijuana plants, of which no more than three may be mature. The law establishes a confidential state-run patient registry that issues identification cards to qualifying patients.

Possession/Cultivation: Patients (or their primary caregivers) may legally possess no more than one ounce of usable marijuana, and may cultivate no more than six marijuana plants, of which no more than three may be mature. The law establishes a confidential state-run patient registry that issues identification cards to qualifying patients.

Amended: Senate Bill 94 Effective: June 2, 1999 Mandates all patients seeking legal protection under this act to enroll in the state patient registry and possess a valid identification card.Patients not enrolled in the registry will no longer be able to argue the "affirmative defense of medical necessity" if they are arrested on marijuana charges.

[pic] Regulate Marijuana In Alaska Thirty-five years after landmark Alaska Supreme Court decision, Alaska’s marijuana law is still contested Last update: June 15, 2010 On April 13, Alaska lost a champion for sensible marijuana policy when Irwin Ravin passed away at the age of 70. Ravin was the plaintiff — and, along with his law partner Robert Wagstaff, one of the attorneys — in the landmark 1975 Alaska Supreme Court case that ruled that although there was no state constitutional right to possess, ingest, purchase, or sell marijuana, the state constitution’s right to privacy included a right to privacy in one’s home, giving Alaskans the right to personal possession in their homes. Since then, lawmakers and reformers have been fighting over the implications of that case, Ravin v. Alaska. In 2006, the legislature and the executive branch attempted to re-criminalize marijuana legislatively. The legislature passed and then-Gov. Frank Murkowski (R) signed House Bill 149, which among other things sought to re-criminalize marijuana possession in one’s home. That attempt was challenged in court, but the issue has not been decided on its merits. On June 5, 2006, the ACLU of Alaska filed suit against the new law. Among other things, House Bill 149 effectively re-criminalized possession of small amounts of marijuana by adults in the privacy of their homes. ...   Visit - .

Medical Cannabis refers to the use of the drug cannabis as a physician-recommended herbal therapy, most notably as an antiemetic. Cannabis has been used for medicinal purposes for approximately 4,000 years. Writings from ancient India confirm that its psychoactive properties were recognized, and doctors used it for a variety of illnesses and ailments. These included a whole host of gastrointestinal disorders, insomnia, headaches and as a pain reliever frequently used in childbirth. In the 1970s, a synthetic version of THC, the primary active ingredient in cannabis, was synthesized to make the drug Marinol. Due to the prohibition of marijuana however; it's use as a medicine is restricted. However, recent Canadian government legislation have made it more available to patients. Patients are now able to apply for personal possession and even a limited cultivation license. ... Until recently marijuana was illeagal here in Fairbanks, but this law was overturned in 2003 and now possession of up to four ounces of marijuana is legal. However if you are found with more than four ounces you can still face fines and some jail time.

Another reporter added: "Alaska has has a medical marijuana law since March, 1999: "Fifty-eight percent of voters approved Ballot Measure #8 on November 3, 1998. The law took effect on March 4, 1999. Law enforcement: Police normally won't bother you unless you are smoking out in the open, and even then they don't pay too much attention to you. up to 4oz. or 4 plants will be ignored as 'personal use.' Where to buy marijuana: Pretty much anywhere inside of the town, downtown is an especially active place for finding dealers and also by parks. Anyone who looks like a dealer probably is, so just go up to them and tell them that you are going through a dry spell and they can probably help you out. another reporter added: "You can ask nearly anyone down town, off of South Cushman St., in North Pole, off College Rd., and, to a slightly lesser extent, at the University. Its good to know someone though, as we can have an occasional dry spell."

Marijuana prices: Depends on who you buy it from, most prices stay the same. About $20 for an gram, $45-$55 for an eighth, $90 to $100 for a quad, and $250-$300 for an ounce. another reporter added: "Normally always $50/8th, if your lucky $40-45. Sometimes you can get a gram for $20. It is pretty standard, but not exactly the cheapest. "

Marijuana brands: Not too sure of the names, however most any weed you get will be excellent. I have not found any weed that I did not like. Most weed here is grown indoors so the growers can carefully control the plants and modify them to be more potent. If you get bad stuff it was probably just a fluke and when you buy again you will get quality stuff. another reporter added: "There seems to be a wide range here. Not that I always expect the dealer to know what they are talking about, I have been told that I was getting 'God Bud', 'Iceburg' and I have been lucky enough to get the near legendary Matanuska Thunderfuck, which most people around here just refer to as Valley Bud."

More information: A cool place to smoke, you can go out to the woods and smoke and no one will ever find you. Lots of places to drive when your high, and good scenery. All in all a good place to come and smoke. There is no such thing as kind bud here because its all good. Even the not great stuff was good. I wouldn't drive while stoned though because, while pot is decriminalized here, cops hit very hard for driving while intoxicated because there are a lot of drunk drivers here. Fairbanks cops arn't too bad, but the North Pole cops have a reputation for being dicks. ...   Visit -

Gonzales v. [pic] Volunteer petitioners needed in Alaska! - Last Update: October 29, 2013 | Alaska’s August 2014 primary-election ballot will likely include a measure that would tax and regulate the production, sale, and use of marijuana for recreational purposes. In order to qualify, the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana has set a goal of collecting 45,000 gross signatures by December 1. With the deadline drawing near, we need ALL of our supporters circulating petitions in order to guarantee a place on the ballot. To date, petitioners have collected 24,465 signatures. This leaves just over 20,000 signatures left to be collected with only a month and a half to go!   Visit -

Based on estimates from Washington and Colorado, where voters recently passed similar laws, Alaska residents can expect roughly $50,000,000 in tax revenue from the legal sale of marijuana. The initiative would also allow law enforcement to focus its limited resources on serious crimes, rather than criminalizing adults for using marijuana responsibly. You can learn more about the initiative here. If you are an Alaska resident and over the age of 18, please let us know if you would like to volunteer as a petitioner! We will send you a petition booklet and work with you personally to answer any questions you may have about gathering signatures.   Visit -

With your support, and the support of volunteers all over the state, the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana can pass a clear and sensible initiative that will tax and regulate marijuana in Alaska. If you are interested in supporting Alaska’s campaign to regulate marijuana, you can volunteer, contribute, or join the campaign on the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana’s website, or contact ballotinitiatives@. Stay Connected | Thank you for supporting the Marijuana Policy Project. Please tell your friends and family about this page, so that even more voices for reform can be heard. If you have not already, please subscribe to MPP's free legislative alert service.   Visit -

[pic] Informational Guide on Medical Cannabis | If you have ever heard of the song, “Lets Go Get Stoned,” as sung by Ray Charles or Joe Cocker, you know the lyrics were referring to getting high or using cannabis aka marijuana. This mind altering drug goes by other names as well; names such as weed, pot, joint, blunt, hash and mary jane are quite common among users. Cannabis is a plant that contains a chemical called cannabinoids or cannabinolidic acids. Another substance that is found in cannabis is THC, or Tetrahydrocannabinol, which gives the users that “high” sensation. When speaking of marijuana, the actual substance used in creating the high feeling comes from the leaves and flowering tops of the cannabis plant. Marijuana is considered to be a schedule 1 controlled substance today, because of the THC, which can be highly potent, depending upon the concentration factor of the THC. Visit > < for more.

1. Since 1996, twelve states have legalized medical marijuana use: AK, CA, CO, HI, ME, MT, NV, NM, OR, RI, VT, and WA. Eight of the twelve did so through the initiative process. Hawaii's law was enacted by the legislature and signed by the governor in 2000, Vermont's was enacted by the legislature and passed into law without the governor's signature in May 2004, Rhode Island's was passed into law over the governor's veto in January 2006, and New Mexico's legislation was signed into law by Governor Bill Richardson on April 2, 2007.

2. The Institute of Medicine's 1999 report on medical marijuana stated, "The accumulated data indicate a potential therapeutic value for cannabinoid drugs, particularly for symptoms such as pain relief, control of nausea and vomiting, and appetite stimulation." And more. Visit - medicalm.htm

Their chief concern was that legal medical access would send the message that cannabis is safe. The presidents can, however, lay their safety concerns to rest because the scientific literature overwhelmingly confirms that cannabis is both an effective and safe medicine. The Cannabis Safety Profile. The journal PHARMACOLOGICAL REVIEWS reports that decades of research prove that, "Compared with legal drugs...marijuana does not pose greater risks." Yet based upon mortality statistics, we can safely conclude that cannabis is one of the safest medical drugs known, for, while prescription drugs, defined as safe by the FDA, kill up to 27,000 and aspirin up to 1,000 Americans per year, cannabis kills 0 per year.
