Lancers Smash Sydney, Two Down And Three to GoLa Salle extended their state-leading playoff victory string to 17 with a convincing 41-6 victory over the Sidney Yellow Jackets [10-2]. The 3-time defending state champs are one of 8 teams left in the chase for the state title.The Yellow Jackets entered the game ranked #8 in the state, averaging a little over 41 points a game. Their running back Isaiah Bowser, a Northwestern signee and frontrunner for the Ohio Mr. Football title, entered the game averaging 8 yards a carry and 2617 yards for the year. He had ten 100+ yardage games this season. Bowser had also scored 29 touchdowns or 2 ? a game.Sidney came into the game having defeated a Belmont team 46-33. Belmont had only given up a total of 9 points in their first 10 games. In the first half against the Lancers, Sidney had no points and Bowser had 36 yards on 10 carries with the team totaling 65. Enough said! You can stop reading. Not really.It was a chilly night at Holland Field on the Miamisburg campus. The Lancers set the tone for the game on the opening drive, marching 65 yards on 9 plays for the TD. The scoring play was a 11-yard pass from Griffin Merritt to Jake Roberts. With 10:17 to go in the opening quarter the Lancers led 6-0. The extra point was missed on a low snap. Two possessions later the Lancers were at it again. This time Merritt, with plenty of time in the pocket, hit Jake Seibert streaking across the middle for a 49-yard pass and score. With 5:37 to go in the first quarter La Salle led 13-0 and that was the score at quarter’s end.Sidney didn’t get a 1st down until the opening drive of the second quarter, and that was on a penalty. The Lancers defense was dominant. Adam Doenges, Sidney’s coach, told the Dayton Daily News, “They look fast on film, but they are football fast, Across the board, they are all fast.” After recovering a fumble and starting at their 37, the Lancers initiated an 8-play drive resulting in 9-yard bolt up the middle by Cam Porter, carrying Sidney defenders the last three yards into the end zone. Four minutes into the 2nd quarter the Lancers led 20-0.La Salle would score twice more in the half on drives of 67 and 53 yards. The scoring plays were a 20-yard pass from Merritt to Jake Roberts and a 9-yard pass from Merritt to Jake Seibert. The half ended with La Salle taking a commanding 34-0 lead with running time in effect.At the half La Salle had accumulated 365 yards to the Yellow Jackets’ 65. The Lancers had 22 1st downs to Sidney’s 3. Cam Porter, who ran hard the whole evening, had 88 yards on 12 carries. He was followed by Deon Campbell, who earned 75 yards on 9 carries. Griffin Merritt had an outstanding 1st half going 13/20 for 184 yards, four TDs and no interceptions. Josh Whyle had 5 catches for 57 yards. Jake Seibert and Jake Roberts each had 2 TD catches.La Salle and Sidney would each score one touchdown in the second half. On La Salle’s only scoring drive, Kevin Howard carried the ball 12 times for 51 yards and a 7-yard TD. The Warriors defeated the Lancers earlier in the season 18-15, and had it not been for an errant kick by the Warriors in the Elder game, hitting the cross bar, they would have had an undefeated season.Many football experts see the La Salle/Winton Woods game as the most important game remaining for each of them. Whoever wins the game will have an excellent chance of becoming the division II state champions.Friday's OHSAA Region 8 football final vs. Winton Woods will be played at Angus King Stadium at Withrow.
