School Board news

by Jessica Cambron

Derrick Harris is the only candidate running for school board this year. Here is some information about Mr. Harris. His wife is Christine and their two children are Devan, a junior, and Jordan, sixth grader. He graduated from NWOSU in ’92 with a BS in Business Administration. He is currently the Fire Chief and EMT for Kremlin Volunteer Fire Department. He also works for Oneok NGL Pipeline as a pump mechanic.

The Harrises moved to the Enid area 14 years ago and they wanted their children to go to a good school. KHS was known for its academic excellence so they moved into the school district. He wants to keep that tradition going and that is why he is running for the school board.

PE Department Needs Your Help!

by Mrs. Toelle

In elementary, each student has PE (and music) every single day. That’s more often than most of the area school! (Yet another thing that makes K-H the best school around!) However – and this should come as no surprise in today’s economy – things are tight. With over a hundred students in PE each day and no budget, it is a constant battle to find creative and inexpensive ways to make each day a success. Each PE class period has roughly 45 students so that brings an extra challenge in having enough of everything as well.

In college I had a professor who always said “PE should be more than glorified recess”. I’ve tried to keep that in mind as I – a veteran teacher of almost 20 years – have had the opportunity to use my minor and begin teaching PE. So, we have covered several units in PE including hockey, football, basketball, volleyball, and Frisbee golf (learning to score golf as well). We’ve also done several teamwork/problem solving games and activities as well. BUT – we need your help to finish our units for this semester. Please see the list below. If there’s anything you could do to help we’d be sincerely grateful.

Unit Needs

Bowling Empty 2 liter bottles

Step Aerobics Scrap wood (to make 50 step boxes)

Time (to make the above)

Various Games Tennis Balls

Social Games Horse Shoes/Spikes (10 sets total needed for all play)

Croquet Sets (remember those??) (10 sets)

Fit For Life 50 Pedometers

Program* (we’ve found on eBay for $1.50 each)

The Fit for Life program we’d like to implement is a program that inspires kids to stay fit. It includes calorie/fat intake awareness and how to burn those calories. Students also learn distance measurement, and etc. In this program, our goal will be to “walk across the state of Oklahoma” in terms of distance/calories burned.

Any other items such as tennis racquets, golf clubs, or jump ropes that you may have in a garage or storage unit could be put to good use as well!

Thanks so much for your continued support of our great school and all its programs!

ALL PUNS INTENDED

1. Two antennas met on a roof, fell in love and got married. The ceremony wasn't much, but the reception was excellent

2. A jumper cable walks into a bar. The bartender says, "I'll serve you, but don't start anything."

3. Two peanuts walk into a bar, and one was a salted.

4. Two cannibals are eating a clown. One says to the other: “Does this taste funny to you?"

5. "Doc, I can't stop singing The Green, Green Grass of Home. "That sounds like Tom Jones Syndrome."

"Is it common?" "Well, It's Not Unusual."

6. An invisible man marries an invisible woman. The kids were nothing to look at either.

7. Deja Moo: The feeling that you've heard this bull before.

8. I went to buy some camouflage trousers the other day, but I couldn't find any.

9. I went to a seafood disco last week... and pulled a mussel.

10. What do you call a fish with no eyes? A fsh.

11. Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly, so they lit a fire in the craft. Not surprisingly it sank, proving once again that you can't have your kayak and heat it too.

12. A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel, and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office, and asked them to disperse. "But why," they asked, as they moved off. "Because," he said. “I can't stand chess nuts boasting in an open foyer."

13. A woman has twins, and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt, and is named 'Ahmal.' The other goes to a family in Spain; they name him 'Juan.' Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal.

Her husband responds, "They're twins! If you've seen Juan, you've seen Ahmal."

13. . A dwarf, who was a mystic, escaped from jail. The call went out that there was a small medium at large.

14. Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him (oh, man, this is so bad, it's good) a super-calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

Superintendent news

by Steve Hoffsommer

Superintendent of Schools for KHS

Parents, I need your help. These past few basketball seasons, our school has gained an unflattering reputation for lack of good sportsman ship at basketball games. Most of this comes from the excessive verbal abuse directed towards the referees from a small number of fans.

In all the years I have coached, I would not allow my players to blame a loss on the referees. When a coach allows players to do so, he or she allows players to place the responsibility for losing somewhere other than on themselves and not take responsibility for poor defending, being outrebounded, turning the ball over, poor shooting, and heaven forbid, admitting the other team was jus plain better. It is difficult for a coach to make his players take ownership of a poor performance and instill in them the need to get better when adults they respect place the blame for losses on the officials.

There is no doubt in my mind we have lost games because some of our fans rode the referees from the opening tip and consequently, the calls could have gone either way all went to the other team -- referees are human. Being screamed at by fans makes them mad and nothing productive comes from it.

Let’s turn over a new leaf and begin repairing the image of our school by refraining to yell insults at the officials. Sure, we all react to an obvious blown call. But to stay on an official and make it personal demonstrates very poor sportsmanship to the young people in attendance. Let’s exemplify the positive side of competitive athletics and not the negative beginning this week at the Cherokee Strip tournament.

Let’s make the Broncs the classiest team and fans in the area!

Thanks for your help!

There are still T-Shirts and sweatshirts available. Some of them are at reduced prices! These will continue to be available at our Friday home games. Get them while they last! Don’t miss this opportunity to show your support for the KHS athletes.

Many KHS athletes have earned additional patches for their letter jackets. The Booster Club is going to buy these patches for each athlete. These patches would include tournament, district, regional and state honors. Athletes need to get with their coaches in order to verify that the patches should be ordered. We will get a completed list from the coaches on January 28. If your name is not on the list from the coach your patch will not be ordered.

FFA news

by Jessica Martin

December 11-12 was MFE and ALD.

MFE is a leadership camp for 9th and 10th graders. MFE stands for made for excellence. This year Haley Carson, Jacob Pekrul, Jessie Martin, Lee Olmstead, Miranda Kolesar, Rustin Pearce, Ryan Voth, and Taylor Hole went to represent our school. After arriving and getting settled in, their first session started. That night they had a dance to let everyone have a little fun. The next morning continued with a few more sessions. All the sessions were filled with fun games but also made you meet new people. The speakers also made it a point of how serious becoming a leader was but still having fun doing it. Throughout the stay they had eight speakers, Rhet Laubach, Kelly Barnes, Stewart Kennedy, Casey Kennedy, Elizabeth Stidham, Laila Hajji, Jonie Ternes, and Travis Schnaithman. ALD is a leadership camp for 11th and 12th grades. The meaning of these words is Advanced Leadership Development. The students that attended were Devan Harris, Jenifer Pekrul, Jessica Martin, Kierstin Copage. Arriving at the hotel we put our stuff up and went on to our first session. That night we also had a dance and lots of games to get to know a lot of other people. We went to bed late but woke up early for our next sessions our speakers were Bill Cordes and Phil Boyte. Throughout both these camps you had to learn about a lot of things but the speakers made it fun way of learning. They taught us that being a leader is more than just having a title to your comfort zone, but once you get out you have a blast. The best thing is meeting new people along the way. These camps were meant for you to have fun but also be serious about the stuff you learned. The main part is bringing back the things you learn and making a difference in our chapter and in someone else’s eyes.

Christmas Angels

This year our FFA Chapter decided to buy presents for Christmas angels. The FFA officers picked four kids to buy Christmas gifts for. The officers spent the evening buying gifts that they thought the children would really enjoy. Buying presents is a big way of showing people how much you care. This project really helped us realize how fortunate we are and it felt good to have the opportunity to make someone else feel the same way.

December 22 was the FFA Christmas party.

This year our FFA Chapter had a party for all the members just to be together and have fun. We had lots of food to eat and plenty of fun. We played dirty Santa and everyone enjoyed stealing gifts from each other.

Legislative Appreciation Dinner

January 5th was Legislative Appreciation dinner at Drummond. Starting at 6:30 there was a great meal provided by the Drummond FFA Chapter. This year Mr. Smith took Jessica Martin and Ty Zaloudek. Following the meal Mike Jackson and Kale Walker talked about where the future of Agriculture stood.

Up Coming Events

January 17th the Booster club is having a meeting.

FCA Dallas Trip

by Ty Schoenhals and Ty Zaloudek

The senior FCA boys and sponsor Mr.Gossen went to Dallas on the weekend of November 20-21. The boys who went were Austin Fox, Brandon Davis, Ty Schoenhals, and Ty Zaloudek. We attended the Dallas Cowboy football game against the Detroit Lions. The “Party Animals,” as they like to be called, because of the “Roger”, left on Saturday the 20th and arrived that evening after breaking into song…for six hours. After Brandon’s solo of the “Dancing Queen” by ABBA we formed a quartet to sing “For the Longest Time” by Suede. Later we graced Yogurt Zone with our presence and decided that Enid should get one. Oh and we watched Dallas stomp the Detroit Lions in the THROAT! Cop roll! That is all!

Yearbook news

by Trev Schoenhals

The 2010-2011 Yearbook is coming along great! We recently had a photo contest for students, and people in the surrounding area. The winners will have their photos featured on the cover of this year’s new yearbook! Thanks for all the help and participation in our contest!
