Man Cave Blog #1: Breaking Down the Week 9 Man Cave Real RankingsAnother exciting weekend of College Football provided us with some movement up and down the top 20 in our own Michigan Man Cave Real Rankings. When you breakdown the rankings by their total point values, it provides you with insight on how the top teams in College Football compare to one another. We discuss several topics regarding this week’s rankings:Ranking the Best Wins This Season in College Football5. Clemson at Virginia TechClemson was undefeated when they traveled to Blacksburg to take on the Hookies. The Tigers defeated Virginia Tech 31-17, doing so in convincing fashion. There are only five teams to earn Top 15 wins this season and Clemson has one of them. 4. TCU at Oklahoma StateTexas Christian took down Oklahoma State back in Week 4. Many people (in the AP) had Oklahoma State ranked very highly coming into the season. That’s exactly why preseason polls in the AP simply DO NOT WORK. The old fashion theory of using last week’s ranking to dictate how far a team moves up or slides down is extremely outdated and frankly incorrect. TCU got credit for a victory over a #6 ranked Oklahoma State team when in reality the Cowboys have slipped to #11. If Oklahoma State would not have been ranked so highly in the first place, TCU would not be receiving as much credit as they are now. Either way, the game still earns #4 on our list.3. Iowa State at OklahomaIt’s fair to say now, the Cyclones have certainly been a surprise team this season. Their victory at Oklahoma back in week 5 is certainly the best evidence to support that claim. Iowa State needed a thrilling second half comeback to take down playoff hopeful Oklahoma Sooners in Norman. Despite having two losses versus unranked opponents (Iowa, 44-41 and Texas, 17-7) the Cyclones are ranked as high as 6th by the computer. Iowa and Texas are middle of the pack contenders in their respective conferences but the Hawkeyes and Longhorns have looked formidable in their losses. Iowa State’s remaining wins over Power 5 teams are unappealing but a win over TCU this week could change that quickly. As long as Oklahoma keeps winning, this victory will continue to be very favorable by the computer. Remember, the computer formula is fluid. For example, a team like Alabama does not get credit for beating a #3 Florida State team, it instead gets chalked up as just another win over an unranked Power 5 opponent - - it just makes more sense that way. 2. Oklahoma at Ohio StateBaker Mayfield and the Sooners made Ohio State look silly in their own yard way back in week 2. As we mentioned, the rankings are fluid, and because Ohio State has bounced back nicely, (albeit against extremely poor competition: UNLV, Army, Rutgers, Maryland, and Nebraska) Oklahoma continues to earn more credit as each week passes. The AP has the Buckeyes ranked as high as #6, five whole spots ahead of the Man Cave Real Rankings where Ohio State sits at #11. Sooner fans will be rooting hard for Ohio State this Weekend as the Buckeyes welcome Saquon Barkley and Trace McSorely to the Horseshoe. 1. Georgia at Notre DameGeorgia and Notre Dame entered their 2017-2018 campaigns with less respect from the AP as opposed to some of the other blue bloods. Another reason why Preseason rankings DO NOT WORK. The Bulldogs took down the Irish in South Bend (20-19) in week 2. Similarly to the Oklahoma-Ohio State situation, Georgia fans are going to continue rooting for Notre Dame so their victory in South Bend remains strong. Even if Notre Dame does run the table from here on out to finish with one-loss, Bulldog fans should have little to worry about even if they do slip up once this season. A head-to-head tiebreaker should give the Bulldogs an edge over Notre Dame. Best Resumes in the NationHere are the best resumes in college football this season according the computer and the strength of wins formula. We breakdown everybody’s resume and group similar point values together to gain the best possible insight into who has the strongest wins this season.Group 7: Stanford, Ohio State, NC StateHow is Ohio State ranked #19 by the formula? Simply put, good wins get rewarded – and Buckeye fans, you have none!Group 6: OK State, Auburn Wisconsin, Miami, Virginia TechAll the teams in group 6 are lacking a signature win. Virginia Tech is the only team out of the bunch to beat a Top 25 team this season. That win came over an overrated West Virginia team back in Week 1 of the season.Group 5: Michigan State, LSU, Notre Dame, Washington StateThis group is a fairly good example why the “eye test” and the human element should always remain an important factor in ranking teams. When comparing LSU and Michigan State the two teams both have earned 11.5 points. LSU has the better win this season – Auburn at home while Michigan State has zero wins over Top 25 AP ranked teams. However, the Spartans have defeated two more Power 5 teams with winning records. Those wins for MSU were: Iowa, Michigan, and Minnesota. The computer also has docked LSU for unranked losses at Mississippi State and Troy at home. Take away the two losses for the Tigers and LSU has better quality wins. Notre Dame and Washington State have very similar resumes and fall within this group as well. Both teams have an identical signature win – USC at home in convincing fashion. Despite losing to unraked Cal, the Cougars maintain a ? point lead ahead of Notre Dame because they have one more win on the season (7-1 compared to 6-1). Anybody judging these two teams would probably rank Notre Dame higher because you would look directly at each of the team’s losses. Notre Dame lost to Georgia by 1 point, Washington State lost to Cal by 34. There is really no comparison and a great reason why the eye test remains vital!Group 4: Penn State, USC, Iowa StateAgain, the eye test is vital! A reason why the computer formula is only ? of the total calculation. Nobody in their right mind would have USC ahead of Washington State, Notre dame, or tied with Penn State in their rankings!! But the computer does… Why? USC has 13 total points, ? ahead of Washington State and 1 full point ahead of Notre Dame. USC has one more win over a Power 5 team with a winning record while both of their losses are to ranked opponents so the Trojans don’t get docked any points. When comparing USC and Penn State. The Nittany Lions have 1 more win but USC’s win over Stanford keeps them tied at 13 points each. Iowa State’s victory over Oklahoma bumps them to the top of Group 4, #6 overall. Group 3: Oklahoma, AlabamaTwo blue bloods share a spot in Group 3 – Oklahoma (#5) and Alabama (#4). Alabama stays a ? point ahead of Oklahoma despite the sooners having one of the best quality wins on anybody’s resume. Alabama has two more wins (8 to 6) and 3 more wins over Power 5 opponents. Despite zero victory’s over Top 25 teams, The Crimson Tide remain just ? point above Oklahoma.Group 2: Clemson, TCUDon’t sleep on Clemson just yet! The Tigers have an impressive resume despite the glaring loss at Syracuse. Syracuse has competed against better competition over the course of their season, so perhaps people may not view this loss quite as bad as the season progresses. Remember last season, Clemson made the playoff with a loss to 8-4 Pittsburgh. Clemson’s strength of wins comes in the form of beating four Power 5 teams with winning records (Wake Forest, Louisville, Virginia Tech, and Auburn). That is the most wins over Power 5 Opponents with Winning Records in the nation. The Tigers also have one of five Top-15 wins on the road. That is good enough to bolster them to the 3rd overall spot.TCU is ranked 2nd by the computer, a ? point ahead of Clemson. The two teams would have identical resumes, according to the computer, at 17 points if Clemson would not have lost to Syracuse. Group #1: GeorgiaIt may be lonely at the top but Georgia fans don’t mind that at all! The Bulldogs have the most impressive resume by two full points ahead of TCU. Simply put, a win at Notre Dame is better than a win at Oklahoma State. After throttling the USC Trojans last week, Notre Dame jumped several points, leaping Oklahoma and Oklahoma State right into the AP Top10. Notre Dame’s victory single handedly gave Georgia the two point edge by earning a point for each of the following categories; Win over Top 10 and Win over Top 10 on the Road. Explaining the Top 4The top 4 teams according to the Michigan Man Cave Real Rankins were announced on Friday’s podcast during Segment 3 of the show. The top four teams are as followed:1. Georgia: 55 points Georgia was ranked #2 by Tyler Szczepanski, and #3 by Trevor Kline and Cory Kline. The Bulldogs strength of wins, specifically at Notre Dame gave them the ? point edge over Alabama to take 1st place away from Alabama in just the second release of the Man Cave Real Rankings. Looks like an Irish fan might still be bitter about the 2012 championship game…. Tyler Szczepanski played a role in Georgia’s number one ranking over Alabama by favoring Georgia over Penn State while Cory Kline and Trevor Kline both favored the Big Ten over the SEC at the two spot. 2 – Alabama: 54.5 PointsDon’t worry, we’re not too crazy. Alabama was ranked #1 by all three Man Cave Voters. The problem for the Crimson Tide resided in their resume when comparing it to Georgia. If the season ended today for the computer, Alabama would have snuck in at #4 but the Bulldogs still have a 19-14.5 point lead in the computer’s mind. 3 – TCU: 53.5 Points TCU was ranked #2 by Trevor Kline, #4 by Tyler Szczepanski and #5 by Cory Kline. The Horned Frogs have the 3rd best resume according to the computer and are ranked in a different spot by each of the three Man Cave voters. TCU is a perfect reason why it’s important to look at things from a different perspective! The different approaches from all four factors landed TCU a spot at #3, one full point behind Alabama.4 – Penn State: 48 points Penn State was ranked #2 by Cory Kline and Trevor Kline and #3 by Tyler Szczepanski. The Nittany Lions schedule is weak as they do not have a win over a ranked opponent. That could change very quickly if Penn State takes down Ohio State in Columbus this weekend. Penn State could gain as many as 5 points on the field with a victory. Expect Penn State to make the jump into the third spot with a win over Ohio State. First Two Out:5. Clemson: 44.56. Notre Dame 44Tyler SzczepanskiMichigan Man Cave Journalist OCT 28. 2017. 12:58am. ................
