WHAT IS OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE?

Occupational Medicine can be defined as a branch of medicine dealing

with the prevention and treatment of job-related injuries and illnesses.

It focuses on the health of workers, including the ability to perform

work; the physical, chemical, biological, and social environments of

the workplace; and the health outcomes of environmental exposures.

Practitioners in this field address the promotion of health in the

workplace and the prevention and management of occupational and

environmental injury, illness, and disability.

The Occupational Medicine specialist works to ensure the highest

standards of occupational health and safety that can be achieved and

maintained. While occupational medicine may involve a wide number

of disciplines, it is centered on preventive medicine and management of

illness, injuries, and disability related to the work place.

To become certified in Occupational Medicine, the physician has to have

a medical degree or osteopathic degree. The certified physician, for the

most part, has a Master Degree in Public Health (MPH). Physicians in

this field have gone through a formalized or an approved clinical track

for three to five years.

The four areas of study within this field are:

? Biostatistics

? Epidemiology

? Environmental Medicine

? Occupational Medicine

Once the physician has completed the above course of study and it has

been approved by the American Board of Preventative Medicine, the

applicant has to pass a written examination.

Dr. Boswell completed his

undergraduate studies in

biology at Alma College

in Alma, Michigan. He

graduated cum laude with

honors. He completed

his medical degree in

osteopathic medicine from

Michigan State University,

College of Osteopathic Medicine, East Lansing, MI.

He also obtained a Fellowship in Human Anatomy

from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI.

His internship (rotating with emphasis in internal

medicine) was completed in the United States

Navy and his residency in Family Practice from

The Osteopathic Medical Center of Philadelphia,

Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Boswell maintains an active

practice and is triple certified in Family Practice,

Emergency Medicine and Occupational Medicine.

He is a Washington State Department of Labor and

Industries approved provider and has been practicing

in the Occupational Medicine field for over 20 years.

WHAT IS OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE?

The Occupational Medicine specialist is trained to

amalgamate medicine and the law. This amalgamation

is to provide the most efficacious delivery of a safe

workplace. To achieve this result, the specialist has

to keep in balance the employee, the employer, and

the insurance company (third party payer) through

carefully orchestrated communication. This is done in

compliance with the State of Washington¡¯s Department

of Labor and Industries.

Even though in the occupational medical setting the

classic doctor-patient relationship does not exist, the

occupational physician is still legally bound to the

delivery of care to the standard of medical care.

One of the major tasks of the Occupational Medicine

physician is to determine if a patient¡¯s complaint is the

result of a work-related medical disease or injury.

The specialist is also trained in environmental medicine

to deal with exposures and screening procedures for

asbestos, lead, benzene, volatile organic compounds,

arsenic, formaldehyde, chrome, cadmium, mercury,

polyvinyl chloride exposures, etc. and their associated

treatment protocols. The occupational medical

specialist also has a working knowledge in blood and

body-fluid exposure protocols. The occupational

medical specialist also has an awareness of the

biological hazards of mold, fungus, protozoans, etc.
