ANTI-HARASSMENT TOOL #1:Harassment ScenariosExample 1:Your working environment is very hectic. Employees tend to swear at each other, call each other names and make catcalls and off-color comments to each other. One employee tells a dirty joke each day. Most of the workers in the division participate, but a few seem uncomfortable.Example 2:A group of workers view another employee as overtly religious because she has religious symbols in her cubicle and wears religious jewelry. The group teases and taunts her repeatedly.Example 3:On numerous occasions, Supervisor Bob speaks to his direct report employee, Dan, in a belittling and demeaning manner by calling him a slow, lazy and an incompetent employee. Bob threatens to fire Dan on more than one occasion if he does not shape up. In a fit of rage, Bob throws Dan’s report in the garbage and laughs sarcastically. Dan feels that Bob is rude to him by making degrading and offensive comments and he is unable to effectively perform his duties due to Bob’s intimidation tactics.Example 4:In the course of a conversation with a colleague, Albert learns that everyone’s leave requests are approved within a day or two except his requests. Mike, his boss, frequently delays approving his leave up to the requested day. Albert also learns that his colleagues’ temporary positions have been extended, but not his. Mike generally terminates conversations when Albert enters the room. Albert makes numerous attempts to discuss his concerns with Mike, but Mike cancels each appointment at the last minute preventing Albert from expressing his concerns. Albert feels singled out in his work unit based on Mike’s behavior.Example 5:Margaret is deaf and requests her co-workers look directly at her when speaking in order to read their lips. Co-workers Jane and Sylvia purposefully turn away from Margaret at various points during conversations so she is unable to understand everything spoken by them. Additionally, Jane and Sylvia use exaggerated gestures with their hands, as if mocking Margaret’s use of sign language.Example 6:Frederick sees his manager, Jeff, disrespecting an elderly employee by frequently telling him he moves much slower than younger employees do. Jeff berates him with comments suggesting he should retire so other employees have a chance at his job, calls him the “office grandfather” and makes numerous age-related comments.Frederick reported Jeff’s behavior to the director, who admonishes Jeff for his actions. Within a week, Jeff assigns Frederick a number of tasks well below his grade level. In addition, Jeff begins referring to Frederick as “snitch,” “rat” and “dead-man-walking.” Jeff’s behavior has been ongoing for more than two months.Example 7:After learning that Carl was homosexual, his co-worker, James, starts making derogatory comments and spreading rumors. James’ comments and rumors continue even after Carl asks him to stop discussing his private business and spreading false rumors.Example 8:Meredith’s team lead, JoAnne, punches Meredith’s shoulder every time they pass one another in the office. JoAnne also tousles Meredith’s hair every morning, knocks items over on her desk and purposefully drops paperclips, erasers, pens and other items into Meredith’s coffee. JoAnne’s behavior has been ongoing for more than six months. Meredith considers leaving her position because of the intimidation she feels from JoAnne’s bullying behavior.Cyber-Bullying ScenariosExample 1:David was oblivious to a website created all about them. For months, there has been a website that made fun of David and his family. The website indicates that David was a pedophile, he is gay and dirty. David reported this to his manager alleging Brian, a TIGTA co-worker, created the site.Example 2:When someone stole Amanda belongings, she reported it to her manager. Later that night, she received instant messages calling her harsh names and saying she was a tattletale. Trying to defend herself, she identified two co-workers had stolen her stuff. She received instant messages, all which were threatening and intensely mean messages.Example 3:Tom works in a group with Carole, a group secretary. While teleworking, Tom receives an email from Carole that states, “Would you like to have dinner one day?” Tom finds the message odd because he knows Carol is aware that he is married and she has never said anything like that before. A few days later, Tom receives an instant message from Carole saying, “I’m still waiting for your response.” The following week, Tom goes to the office and receives a handwritten note that states, “don’t worry, I know how to keep a secret,” with no signature. Tom decides it is time to confront Carole whose cubicle is located outside of the manager’s cubicle. Just as Tom approaches he hears loud laughter and notices several of his coworkers, as well as his manager, all gathered in the manager’s cubicle. The group calls Tom into the manager’s office and tells him Carole didn’t send any of the messages but rather, they sent them to him when she would step away from her desk and then immediately deleted them. They admit Carole had no knowledge of the messages sent to him. Tom speaks with his 2nd-line manager about filing a harassment complaint, as well as concerns that his coworkers and managers were using someone else’s computer without her knowledge. Tom is told he should just let it go because nothing was done with “malicious intent” and he needs to “lighten up.” Example 4:Because of Drew’s disability (irritable bowel syndrome), Drew is granted a reasonable accommodation to temporarily telework five days a week. Drew’s coworkers believe he is being given special treatment because Drew has a special relationship with Dawn, the group supervisor. The coworkers begin calling, texting and sending messages to Drew, joking with him about his alleged relationship with Dawn and the “perks” he is receiving. A couple of his coworkers are also friends with Drew on Facebook and periodically make innuendos on his Facebook page about the benefits he receives at work because of his special relationship with Dawn. Drew becomes concerned that his wife will think he really is having an inappropriate relationship with Dawn because of the texts and Facebook messages. Example 5:Nikki and Toni were once good friends when they worked together as Program Analysts for a period of almost 10 years. Toni was promoted to a position as a front-line manager in another group. After Toni was promoted, Nikki immediately stopped speaking to Toni and began rolling her eyes anytime they passed each other. Nikki also began telling everyone that Toni thinks she’s better than everyone because she got a promotion. Toni reported Nikki’s behavior to management and the behavior at work stopped.Approximately two months later, Nikki started posting comments on Toni’s Facebook page, such as “this is a treacherous witch who will stab you in the back.” Nikki also began sending Toni vicious text messages, such as “you’ll get yours one day because you’re a fake friend.” Toni unfriended Nikki on Facebook and blocked her number on her cell phone, but Nikki continues to find ways to attack her using other people’s accounts and cell phones, and on other social media sites. One day, Toni receives a text message from an unknown number that states, “I know where you live, work, eat and sleep so watch your back ‘Benedict.’” ................
