Exercise 1. Due: ______________________.

Find each of the unit’s words in Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary (m-). Copy the word and its entry onto a separate sheet of paper. Copy the word broken into its syllables; copy ALL meanings; copy ALL parts of speech; copy ALL related words; copy ALL synonyms and antonyms; copy any sample sentences or phrases given. There are only two things that you do not need to copy: (1) anything related to pronunciation and (2) anything related to word origin. Use the information you find to complete Exercises 2, 3, and 4. Do not use a word processor for this exercise. Credit will be given for handwritten work only. A minimum of half credit will be deducted for failing to copy over ALL parts of any entry.

A. Ten Words in Context: In the space provided, write the letter of the meaning closest to that of each boldfaced word. Use the context of the sentences to help you figure out each word’s meaning.

1. brevity • Everyone was surprised by the brevity of the principal’s speech at graduation. He spoke for less than five minutes.

• President Calvin Coolidge was famous for the brevity of his remarks. When a woman told him, “I have a bet that I can get you to say three words to me!” his response was, “You lose.”

On a separate sheet of paper, write an original sentence using each vocabulary word. To show that you know the meaning of the word, each sentence must also have a “context clue”. Underline the vocabulary word and its context clue in each sentence. You must write each sentence twice: once using the synonym or synonymous phrase from Exercise #2A or #3A of this worksheet and then again using the vocabulary word. More detailed instructions on context clues and on writing sentences in pairs is given in the handout: “Instructions for Writing Sentences with Vocabulary Words.”
