Unit 2 Assessment:

Writing about the Classroom Toys We Prefer

This formative assessment centers on CCSS ELA W.K.1, L.K.5e, and L.K.6. For this assessment, students use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to communicate a preference about which classroom toy they prefer. The assessment is in two parts. In the first, students respond to the prompt: “Which of these classroom toys do you prefer?” During the second part of the assessment, students respond to the prompt: “Draw the classroom toy you prefer. Write at least one word to describe the toy.”

This assessment builds on experiences of reading, speaking, and listening from previous lessons but involves less teacher support. It provides baseline data to be used to guide instruction throughout the module.

CCSS Assessed:

• W.K.1: Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose opinion pieces in which they tell a reader the topic or the name of the book they are writing about and state an opinion or preference about the topic or book (e.g., My favorite book is...).

• L.K.5c: Identify real-life connections between words and their use (e.g., note places at school that are colorful).

• L.K.6: Use words and phrases acquired through conversations, reading and being read to, and responding to texts.

Assessment Directions:

Part I: This part of the assessment is administered in Unit 2, Lesson 9.

1. First, remind students of the definition of the word prefer (to like one thing more than something else).

2. Distribute and display the Unit 2 Assessment, Part I recording form.

3. Read the first question aloud and track each word.

4. Model how to complete the form by circling your preferred classroom toy.

5. Invite students to circle their preferred classroom toy.

6. Proceed to the sentence frame at the bottom of the page. Read it aloud: “I prefer _____________________.”

7. Model writing your preferred classroom toy.

8. Dismiss students to their workspaces to write the name of their preferred classroom toy.

Part II: This part of the assessment is administered in Unit 2, Lesson 10.

1. Briefly remind students about the thinking and writing they did in Part I of the assessment.

2. Explain that they will draw a picture of the toy and also write a word to describe the toy.

3. Display the Unit 2 Assessment, Part II recording form and model how to complete it.

4. Tell students they will now practice drawing their toy and writing a word to describe or tell about it, using the recording forms already at their workspaces.

5. Remind students to refer to the Size Words anchor chart, Color Words anchor chart, and Texture Words anchor chart to help them describe their toy.

6. Briefly tell students that as they work, you will also come talk to them about how they like to play with the toy they prefer. Provide an example for how they might respond: “I like to roll and squish the play-dough!”

7. Dismiss students to their workspaces.

8. Circulate and ask students to tell you how they like to play with their preferred toy. Scribe their responses on the bottom of their Unit 2 Assessment, Part II recording form.
