EDUCATION FOR THE 21st CENTURY
GAMES, GAMES— AND YET MORE GAMES
An Online Workshop Series with Doug Goodkin— 2020-21
Games are what sets the Orff approach to music education apart from the dull drill of mere musical practice. They meet children in their world of play, integrate singing-dancing-playing, socially connect kids and make the serious work of learning music and dance fun for both children and teachers alike. In the hands of the skillful teacher, games can lead to instrumental ensemble pieces and/or choreographed dances. This series will not only offer a large variety of games to add to your repertoire, but examine the how, when and why of how to teach the games and further develop them. A special feature will include how to adapt games to the virtual learning of our COVID times.
Saturday, Sept. 5: 10:00-10:45
FREE preview of the offerings and a chance to connect early in the school year to give each other support and encouragement. No registration necessary.

GAMES FOR ALL AGES: How to adapt games so they are enticing to children of all
ages? How might the same game be played differently with preschool/ elementary/ middle school kids? How to group games so that children become more adept in the different
styles—partner clapping games, rhythm games, ring plays, line plays, number games,
chasing games, passing games, etc.? We’ll do all of this modified for the online format.
Your own children or housemates are welcome to join at no extra charge!

GAMES FROM ALL PLACES: Games are universal—all children everywhere play
them and the same genres of game styles (see first workshop) can be found everywhere.
At the same time, the language, rhythms and styles differ, making them an excellent
starting point to investigate various musics of the world. We will leave a time in this
workshop for folks to share games from their own cultural background and childhood.

GAMES IN JAZZ EDUCATION: The essential elements of much jazz—offbeat,
synocpation, swing, call and response, blues scale, jazz phrasing, improvisation—can
all be found in African-American children’s games. Drawing from examples in my books
Now’s the Time and All Blues and the CD Boom Chick a Boom, we will look at how to
develop these games into ensemble pieces playable by kids of all ages.
