Glaucoma is an eye disease that causes permanent damage to the optic nerve, usually due to high pressure inside the eye. If untreated it can result in blindness, and there is currently no cure. Glaucoma affects people of all ages, but the risk increases with age; we support people from infancy to old age, and the average age of our beneficiaries is 78 years old.People from BAME communities have an increased risk of developing glaucoma. People of African-Caribbean origin are four times more likely to develop glaucoma, and it is more likely to appear earlier and be more severe when compared to people of European origin. People from South East Asian communities also have a substantially increased risk.Glaucoma is usually symptomless in its early stages, and vision loss happens gradually so often goes unnoticed. Over 700,000 people in the UK have glaucoma and the number is expected to rise by 44% between now and 2035. At Glaucoma UK our aim is to end preventable glaucoma sight loss, and support people to live well with the disease. To achieve this we run a telephone helpline, provide free information and advice materials, and provide information via our website and online forum. We also fund research and provide support and resources to professionals working in the glaucoma field. Our services are open to anyone, and thanks to the generosity of our supporters, they are free to anyone who needs them. For more information please visit our website glaucoma.uk or find us on ????The background to this role Glaucoma is a chronic disease that requires lifelong treatment. People need regular appointments to monitor the progress of the condition, manage treatment and maintain sight. When the pandemic hit in March 2020, ophthalmology services effectively ceased all but emergency care in order to free up resources needed to manage COVID-19. Whilst there has been some return to elective care, much routine work is still on hold, and appointments are being delayed and cancelled while services struggle to develop new ways of working. A small number of high-risk people are still being invited for hospital clinic appointments, but it is a sad reality that some people will suffer sight loss, as well as high levels of stress and anxiety. Those at risk of glaucoma have also been affected because many optometry practices closed their doors and were no longer able to carry out the routine screening that detects over 90% of glaucoma in the UK. This particularly affects those in high risk groups who require more frequent eye health checks. Our own services have also been affected. Our glaucoma support groups can no longer meet because of the need for social distancing, and we have had to cancel all our face to face events and community support activities. Sadly, we cannot yet see a time when it will be feasible to re-open them. So to sum up: we have increasing numbers of people living with glaucoma who aren’t being diagnosed, treated or supported via traditional routes. We need to develop sustainable and effective ways of expanding our support to all those communities who need it, and a key element of this is digital support. Our Head of Support Services recently successfully trialled a short series of digital support groups featuring presentations by top glaucoma specialists, followed by Q&A sessions. We learned a lot from these sessions, but now need to build on this to create a library of high quality material and a system for rolling out new content that meets the needs of the people living with glaucoma, including opportunities for peer support. This new fixed-term post - funded by the Coronavirus Community Support Fund – will research, design and deliver digital support that will form a key part of the charity’s offer during the critical months ahead, but also into the future. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, this is an exciting time for us at Glaucoma UK. During the summer – despite the sudden move to home working - we adopted the new operating name of Glaucoma UK (we were previously the International Glaucoma Association), rebranded, launched a new website, and dipped a toe into online support services. We’ve made massive strides in the last few months, and we’re really excited that this new post will help us to develop at pace and scale. We can offer training and development opportunities, 21 days annual leave pro rata, up to 5% contributory pension, access to Benenden healthcare support and an AXA Employee Assistance Programme. 3211830-40005Glaucoma UK Board of Trustees00Glaucoma UK Board of TrusteesGlaucoma UK staff structure5111750147320004556760147320002766060147320006271260175260Finance & Governance Committee00Finance & Governance Committee537210184785Clinical Advisory Panel (incorporating Grants Committee)00Clinical Advisory Panel (incorporating Grants Committee) 377571095885Chief Executive Karen Osborn00Chief Executive Karen Osborn747395015240Office Administratorrecruiting00Office Administratorrecruiting568198015240Executive PARichenda Kew00Executive PARichenda Kew713105029845005339080298450045599351549390025781054609001867535634990035496505461000591185054610008483600552440025781054610007630886193403IT Development ManagerTracy Dorman00IT Development ManagerTracy Dorman4972050191770Head of Support ServicesJoanna Bradley00Head of Support ServicesJoanna Bradley2830830183515Head of FinanceKay Cox00Head of FinanceKay Cox-427990255905Fundraising ManagerJenny McCarthy00Fundraising ManagerJenny McCarthy6477000134620673163514859000551815014859000115570040005Comms & Engagement ManagerRachel Hughes00Comms & Engagement ManagerRachel Hughes35471091276350020955029464000288290044450Finance OfficerWendy Chamberlain00Finance OfficerWendy Chamberlain7943850130176006731635130175004738370201295Helpline ManagerHelen Doe00Helpline ManagerHelen Doe14192254635500-481013507048Support & Membership Admin Natalie Smith00Support & Membership Admin Natalie Smith240030057150003956050546100002616200563880002393950558800004883150509270Helpline AdvisorTrish Ganszczyk00Helpline AdvisorTrish Ganszczyk69278504445 Development ManagersEryl Williams (Wales & SW)Subhash Suthar (London & SE)Hannah Morrow (NE England)Philippa Mason (Scotland)00 Development ManagersEryl Williams (Wales & SW)Subhash Suthar (London & SE)Hannah Morrow (NE England)Philippa Mason (Scotland)5518150249555003357563214313Digital Comms OfficerRecruiting (maternity cover) 00Digital Comms OfficerRecruiting (maternity cover) 5872163114618Digital Support Co-ordinator0Digital Support Co-ordinator71913819368DesignerLindsay Haynes00DesignerLindsay Haynes19954885080Comms & PR Officer Elena Cooper00Comms & PR Officer Elena CooperJob Description Job Title Digital Support Co-ordinatorResponsible to Head of Support Services Responsible forNo other staffLocation Home based (may require occasional travel to our headquarters in Ashford, Kent)HoursFull time 35 hours / week (may include evening or weekend work)Contract Fixed term to mid-April 2021Salary?25,000 - ?26,000 p.a.
