Using the New Microform Equipment



Reader/Scanner/Computer—Ask at Circulation Desk

1. Turn on the microform machine (toggle on side)

2. Turn on the computer

3. Login to computer with the following information

Username: scanner

Password: You must ask for the password at the Circulation Desk.

Log in to: KL200 MICRF (this computer)—this is in drop-down menu

4. The LCD (on reader above Start) should read Pc if you plan on scanning the image to the computer--To toggle between Pc and 1, simultaneously press and hold the PC/PR and the Shift buttons (directly above the green start button) for 2 seconds

Load microfilm—

1. pull out center carriage until pieces of glass separate,

2. load film on left reel (film coming off top and under white roller, between glass pieces, under white roller, into take-up reel).

3. Push center carriage in—film images will be under lens.

4. Find frame that you wish to scan

--other info about microfilm reader:

a. Knob below green “start” rotates image.

b. Gray arrows on carriage advance or rewind film. To do this quickly, pull out center carriage, and use red advance or rewind buttons.

c. Blue dial above lens allows you to zoom in or out. Gray dial allows you to focus image.

Computer

1. Click on icon for Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional—2d icon in column 1

2. Click on the Create PDF (1st row, 1st icon)

3. Select From Scanner

4. The resulting dialog box should have the following settings

Scanner: MS6000 @ 0:0:0

Scan: Front Sides

5. Click on Scan from that dialog box

6. On the next dialog box make sure the Resolution DPI is set to 300

Note

o Lower resolution = smaller file

o Lower resolution = lower quality image

o Default resolution is 400 every time you open the program, but it will retain the settings for each session

7. Click on Scan on this dialog box.

8. When scanning is done, a pop-up box appears with 2 choices—“done” or “next.” Select “done.” Then the scanned image will appear on computer screen, and you can see if you need to readjust film and re-scan.

9. For next image, advance film to desired microfilm frame and repeat steps 2-8.

10. When you have successfully scanned all the images you want, you can now “delete” the unsuccessful scans. a. Click on “pages” tab to right of image on computer screen. Small images of all pages in file will appear. b. Highlight ones you wish to delete. c. Press “delete” key on computer keyboard.

11. Save file to Desktop [Click on file in from top menu, then click on “save as,” “save in” “Desktop,” name the file.]

12. Open e-mail and send yourself an e-mail with the file as an attachment.
