This reference book is a combination of a dictionary (with definitions) and a thesaurus (with synonyms.) To make the best use of it when writing, you need to be well-acquainted with its different features and hopefully this scavenger hunt will provide you with that opportunity. Happy Hunting!1. Find the “Contents” page toward the front of the book. What page can you find the “States of the United States of America”? 2. Turn to page viii, “How to Use The Oxford Desk Dictionary and Thesaurus.” Look closely at the “entry map” description and the labels. What symbol is used to indicate “derivatives” of words in the entries?3. Guide words are the words on the tops of the pages that show the reader, at a glance, the first word and the last word on the page. This reference helps you quickly find words in alphabetical order. What color are the guide words in this book?4. What are the guide words on page 103?5. The synonyms in the entries are located after a small blue cube and sometimes a number that shows which definition the synonyms match. Look up the word “flash” and find the synonyms after the small blue cube and the numbers “1,2.” Write down the third synonym after the “1,2.”6. Find the word “write.” Look for the pronunciation right after the word and write it here.7. Look up the word “government” and write down the first definition.8. On what page is the word “happy” found? Use the guide words to help you find it.9. What is the noun definition of a “schuss?”10. Look up the word “bad.” Find the synonyms after the small blue cube. Write down the 5th synonym listed.11. The back of the book includes a “Punctuation Guide” starting on page 995. Look through the section and find “quotation marks.” Write down the first example that is written in italics.12. There are places in the book that are set apart by black lines, and they are “synonym studies.” In these sections, the subtle differences between synonyms are explained.
