Negative ‘Tú’ Commands
For regular ‘-ar’ verbs:
Go from the “yo” form of the present tense, drop the “o” , and add the opposite letter ending ES
Example: Don’t dance! – ¡No bailes! Don’t swim! - ¡No nades!
For regular ‘-er’ and ‘-ir’ verbs:
Go from the “yo” form of the present tense, drop the “o” , and add the opposite letter ending AS
Example: Don’t eat! – ¡No comas! Don’t write! - ¡No escribas!
I. Watch out for the stem changers! You still stem change in the negative
commands—they stem change like we did in the present tense.
Example: Don’t sleep! - ¡No duermas! Don’t think! -¡No pienses!
II. For irregular ‘yo’ verbs, you must observe the irregular ‘yo’ pattern.
So conjugate to 1st person from the present tense, drop the “O” , and add
opposite letter endings.
Example: Don’t leave! - ¡No salgas! (salgo) Don’t bring it! - ¡No lo traigas! (traigo)

V. Watch out for these irregular spellings to preserve the sounds!
1.When a “z” is followed by the letters “es”, you change the “z” to a “c” and then add “es”
Don’t start! ¡No comiences! OR ¡no empieces! Or Don’t cross! ¡No cruces!
2. When “c” is followed by the letters “es”, you change the “c” to a “q” and then add “ues”
Don’t touch! ¡No toques! Don’t practice! ¡No practiques! Don’t look ! ¡No busques!
3. The “gu” and the “qu” stay together when followed by -ES.
Don’t play! ¡No juegues! Don’t pay! ¡No pagues! Don’t arrive! ¡No llegues!
VI. Watch out for these irregulars! You need to memorize them.
Ir = To go ( Don’t go! = ¡No vayas!
Ser = To be ( Don’t be! = ¡No seas!
Estar= to be [L] ( Don’t be!= ¡No estés!
Saber = to know ( Don’t know ! = ¡No sepas!
Dar = to give ( Don’t give ! = ¡No des!
VII. All pronouns must be placed before negative commands. [no/indirect/direct/neg. command= No IDC]
