TIMS Directions for PA Certification Candidates Messiah College

Please use this guide as you work through the Pennsylvania Department of Education's electronic system (TIMS) for applying for certification. If you have questions, ask before you submit your application. After your application is submitted, it cannot be revised. Questions: Amanda Sigel at asigel@messiah.edu or 717-691-6031

Accessing TIMS

You need to register for a log in on PDE's site first (upper left part of page): education.state.pa.us

The next day (it takes about 24 hours before you can log in to TIMS after you have set up your PDE log in), go back to the link to PDE's site above and log in. Click on "Teachers" in the center, then the "TIMS" bright blue logo in the center of the next screen. Scroll down a bit on the next screen. Look for "Access the TIMS application by clicking here." Click on here. This will take you to a screen divided into 4 segments (the dashboard), you are now "in TIMS!"

Entering a New Credential Application

Credential Type: Education Specialist I (31) for School Counseling Endorsement (58) for ASD Endorsement Program Specialist (86) for ESL Private School ? Teacher (1022) for Nursery & Kindergarten (minored in Early Childhood Education and applying for private school, not public school, certification) Instructional I (61) for all other areas

Certification Subject Area: Choose the teacher preparation program area(s) that you have completed while at Messiah. Grades PK4/Special Ed PK-8, Elem/Sec School Counseling, Bio/Env Sci combinations can be submitted on the same application for one $125 fee.

Will a PDE-approved teacher education or other certification program in PA verify that you meet requirements for the certification for which you are applying? YES for all Messiah teacher preparation, program specialist, endorsement, and education specialist program completers

Background questions: Applying for a child abuse clearance is different than being the subject of a child abuse investigation.

Education Details (Read this entire section before entering Education info): By searching, add your undergraduate institution as the first record. If you are completing an educational specialist program as a graduate student at Messiah (counseling), you may need to enter your graduate program first. Did you receive any Degree from this institution? Answer YES if you did or will be receiving a degree from that institution. Post-Bacc students will answer NO on their Messiah education entity record. Did you complete the PDE-approved Educator Preparation Program(s) for this subject area(s) at this institution? YES on the Messiah education entity record for all Messiah College program completers. Enter:

1. Degree 2. Date conferred - you cannot apply earlier than the first day of the month of your

graduation/program completion 3. GPA - only enter tenths, not hundredths, do not round, i.e. 3.3 for 3.38. Many times this will be

an estimate since you will not have your final GPA if you apply before graduation. Major subject area for degree: See PA_CIPS document; two majors can be added in the case of dual certifications. After you answer that you have completed an educator preparation program at Messiah, the Add/Edit Educator Preparation Program box will pop up. Post-Bacc and graduate students will add another record for the college where they earned their bachelor's degree. Be sure to indicate correctly whether or not you completed an educator preparation program at that institution.

Last updated: 8/6/13 Proof Items: An official transcript is required only if you are applying for Private Academic Nursery/Kindergarten Teacher Certification. For all others who have completed preparation programs, Messiah College will review your information and recommend you for certification. PDE will not require a transcript from you.

Health Certificate Form (as of 7/9/13, this form is ONLY needed for Private Academic certification) 1. The health certificate can be uploaded into TIMS before you submit your application. Retain the original. OR 2. After you submit, mail a good quality copy of the health certificate with the cover sheet according to the directions provided. Retain your original health certificate. PDE shreds documents after scanning.

Payment: It is easiest to pay the $125 fee using a credit card. If that is not possible, you can also pay by money order. After you have indicated your method of payment and submitted your application, a link will appear for a cover sheet that you can print. The cover sheet includes a barcoded page that requires your original signature. Send your signed, barcoded cover sheet and your money order, if applicable, to PDE according to the instructions included in the cover sheet document. PDE will not process your application until they receive your signed cover sheet.
