What to Expect after Root Canal Therapy:

What to Expect after Root Canal Therapy:

It is normal to experience soreness for several days following treatment. The following anti-inflammatory drug regimen will alleviate discomfort and/or swelling. Please follow instructions whether or not you are experiencing discomfort. Please be advised that discomfort following visits in no way affects the successful outcome of the treatment.

Disregard the following if allergic or sensitive to Aspirin and/or Ibuprofen.

-Take 600 mg. Ibuprofen every six hours after treatment for four days.

-If Ibuprofen alone is not relieving your discomfort, you can supplement this with the prescribed pain medications given to you. Generally if no allergies are noted, the prescribed pain reliever is either Tylenol #3 or Darvocet. We recommend that you alternate between the two starting with the Ibuprofen.

If you are taking an antibiotic please continue to take as prescribed.

Soaking the area with ½ teaspoon of table salt in 8 oz. of warm water also is helpful. You can do this several times daily if need be.

Avoid chewing on this tooth while it is tender. Also avoid chewing anything hard until the permanent restoration is placed. Generally, it is recommended that a full coverage crown is placed shortly after the root canal treatment (ideally within one month).

You may notice a medicinal taste. This is due to the penetrating quality of the medication and is not harmful.

Sometimes a temporary filling will be placed following the root canal therapy until a more permanent restoration is done. You may notice crumbling of the temporary material placed. As long as most of the temporary filling stays intact this is not a problem until the permanent restoration is placed.
