There is much controversy over Workplace Musculoskeletal Disorders or WMSDs. WMSDs are a range of of disorders involving pain and/or other sensations in muscles, tendons, nerves and joints. In the early stages, symptoms may be limited to pain. The issue is soreness or fatigue are a normal part of physical activity whether at work or play. This can be confused with pain associated with WMSDs. Making things more difficult is individual differences in pain threshold and pain tolerance. Pain Threshold is the point at which a stimulus (such as pressure or temperature) is reported by a person as pain. Pain Tolerance is the amount of pain a person can withstand before breaking down, either emotionally or physically. So, the question is, “How do you recognize when a WMSD exists?”
A WMSD needs to be diagnosed by a medical health professional. Recognizing some of the symptoms may help to decide when to seek professional help. Since pain is the early indicator, know your level of pain tolerance and threshold. If you believe the pain is outside what is usual, seek help. If the pain is also associated with ongoing joint stiffness, muscle tightness and swelling, check with a physician. In later stages of a WMSD, you may eexperience “pins and needles”, numbness, changes of skin color and a decreased amount of sweating of the hands.
Of course, the reduced sweating of hands or other symptoms affecting a certain part of the body can be indications of a specific type of WMSD. Often the symptoms of a particular WMSD are easier to recognize and diagnose. Some of the more common WMSDs and their symptoms are:
• Carpal tunnel syndrome involves pain, numbness and tingling in your hand and wrist that may be reduced by shaking or moving your fingers. These symptoms typically become worse while you are using your hand or wrist.
• Tendonitis can occur at any joint in your body because it is an irritation of the tendons. The symptoms include pain, weakness, swelling with a burning sensation or dull ache in the affected joint.
• DeQuervain’s disease involves the tendon at the base of the thumb. Symptoms include pain and swelling near the base of your thumb and difficulty moving your thumb when grasping or pinching.
• Tension neck syndrome causes you to experience pain in the neck and down your shoulders.
The best way to avoid this type of injury is to pay attention to your body. If you are experiencing pain it is a warning sign that the muscles and tendons of your body need rest and attention. Avoid engaging in activity at home that will aggravate the situation. Reduce or eliminate stress and be sure to eat properly. Look at your work activities for the contributing factors. Apply the techniques provided in training for prevention of WMSDs. Discuss ideas with your supervisor on minimizing or reducing WMSD risks at work. Ignoring the situation can result in an injury that is longstanding and irreversible. The quicker you recognize the symptoms and deal with them, as well as their cause, the more quickly you will recover.
