James Peter Allaire

James Peter Allaire, Iron manufacturer and marine engine builder, was born in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia on July 12, 1785. Originally from New York the family moved to Canada during the American Revolution because of his father's loyalist views.

The Allaire family returned to New York and by 1806, having learned the brass manufacturing business, James P. Allaire opened his own foundry. From 1816 to 1840 he operated the largest marine engine building shop in the United States at his Allaire Works in New York City. He owned and established a line of steamships that traveled up the Hudson as well as a line down to Shrewsbury, NJ in the 1830s. In addition, he established and owned the majority interest in a steam packet line to Charleston, SC. He was also the inventor and patentee of an improvement on steam boilers, which was widely used all over the world.

The Howell Works

In 1822 James P. Allaire purchased the property we now call Allaire and operated here the Howell Iron Works Company. Its purpose was to ensure a source of iron for his New York City steam engine works, known as the Allaire Works. Over the next few years many improvements were made at the Howell Works including a carpenter/pattern maker shop, blacksmith shop, bakery, gristmill, workers' homes, a boarding house, mills to finish iron products, a school, a chapel and a general store with a post office.

The Howell Works thrived during the period 1822 to 1846. James P. Allaire retired in 1850 and moved to the Howell Works spending his remaining years at the site (now called The Historic Village at Allaire) until his death in 1858.
