Dear Mr./Ms./Dr. __________:

Paragraph 1: MAKE UP a reasonable position you could realistically see yourself applying for in the future once all of your formal education is complete, or an internship you would be interested in doing during college. Tell the reader what the position is, how you heard about it (networking, internet, print ad, etc.) and what you are interested in applying for. This is something that will change every time you submit a cover letter. For October 23, I’ll let you choose your own direction, as long as it’s realistic, productive, and legal.

Paragraph 2: BACK TO REALITY! Highlight the education, accomplishments, and achievements you have earned up to this point in your life, and briefly discuss the FUTURE professional plans that will qualify you for the position you wrote about in Paragraph 1. Don’t word things you haven’t done already like you already have. For example, say you plan to attend the University of Missouri – don’t act like you’ve already graduated. Just outline your resume in sentence format and be honest with where you are currently in your educational and professional life. Don’t worry that you have not yet accomplished everything you need to in order to be qualified for what you want to do.

Paragraph 3: Thank the reader for his/her time, give your contact information one more time, and ask for the interview. Say something like, “I look forward to meeting you” to close it out.

Sincerely,

Johnny D. Jaguar
