POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Position Title: Assistant Professor and Extension Turfgrass Specialist

Appointment: This position has a 100% Extension appointment

General Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent to this position will:

• Serve in a coordinating role for campus and center based turfgrass scientists in developing and implementing educational programs, applied research and publication development on turfgrass management.

• Provide leadership in educational programming and applied research in turfgrass establishment, management, irrigation, water use efficiency and turfgrass IPM in cooperation with home owners, managers of municipal green spaces, golf course professionals, lawn care professionals, commercial and sports turf managers, turfgrass growers, and county, center and campus-based faculty and volunteers.

• Serve as contact for turfgrass issues for the public as well as local, state and federal agencies and the industries associated with turfgrass.

• Conduct interdisciplinary research on turfgrass management to address problems relating to varietal suitability, water conservation, integrated pest management, and other practical turfgrass management issues.

• Closely collaborate with extension and research colleagues from all disciplines to develop aesthetically suitable, water efficient turfgrass in the broad array of environments and settings in which it is grown in the state.

• Develop written publications and electronic media to educate the public on issues related to turfgrass, water use, water quality and turfgrass management issues.

• Collaborate with the State Extension Turfgrass Specialist to conduct an annual short course for turfgrass professionals

Administrative Relationships: The incumbent will be report to the Department Head through the Associate Head and Extension Program Leader for Soil and Crop Sciences. The incumbent will potentially supervise one or more Extension Assistants, Associates or Program Specialists, clerical staff and part-time student workers.

Qualifications:

Required:

• An earned Ph.D. in agronomy, crop science, horticultural sciences, or closely related field with a specialization in turfgrass.

• Excellent and demonstrated skills in oral and written communications.

• Experience in the establishment, management and irrigation of turfgrass

Preferred:

• Experience in Extension education

• Experience in developing electronic publications and media

• Experience in the acquisition of extramural grants

Headquarters: The AgriLife Research and Extension Center, 17360 Coit Rd., Dallas, TX

Area Served: primarily Extension Districts 4, 5 and 8 or North and East Texas.
