Research the Olympic Games and a host city

Student guide

In this activity, you will research a year of the Olympic Games in one city and create an attractive informational brochure based on your research. You’ll create a brochure with information you find during your research. To know what information to look for, read Step 2, #5 below.

Step 1

Research the Olympic Games and one set of games in a host city and one sport

Visit the official Web site of the Olympic Movement (). Examine the Past 47 Olympic games at . Select the year and city that you have chosen or that you have been assigned, and start gathering information. Also search for information about this set of games and its host city in Microsoft Encarta or other online encyclopedias, such as the one you can find at or on the Web, and by using Bing Image

Select one particular sport to focus on in your research and to highlight for your brochure.

Gather all your information, enter it in a Microsoft Office Word 2007 document or in Microsoft Office OneNote 2007, and save it. Check for thoroughness and accuracy, and then make additions or corrections, as necessary. Be sure to include images.

• What were emblem and medals designed for these games

• Who designed them?

• What do the symbols represent?

Host city

• Picture of the city or a picture representing the games

• Where are the host country and city located?

• What other attractions are located in the city?

• How did the city and country prepare for the games?

• How were the games unique in this host city?

Athletes

• How many athletes participated?

• Who were the star athletes during these Olympic games?

• How many athletes represented the host country?

• Which country sent the most athletes? The least?

Your Sport of Focus

• Information about the particular sport.

• Competitors in the sport.

• Interesting happenings related to the sport at these Olympic games.

• Medal winners and records

Event highlights

• What records were set?

• What other interesting highlights occurred?

• Were there any "firsts" at these games?

Step 2

Create a brochure for your Olympic Games host city

There will be six main parts to your brochure, one part on each of the six panels. Fill in the required information in each of the six parts or panels. Be sure to include any appropriate pictures or graphics. You might want to layout your information on paper before using Word. Choose some or all of these items—or add your own—to include in your brochure.

Create your brochure

Use Publisher - Select Brochures and an appropriate informational template.

Delete the template information and begin customizing your brochure.

Check to make sure you have entered all the information in the appropriate sections (6) on both pages of the brochure. Include not only visual images but also WordArt or other appropriate design elements. Integrate these with the culture or theme of the games and the city.

Proofread your brochure to make sure there are no grammatical or spelling errors, and check it for legibility, in addition to the attractiveness of the design and colors. When you have finished, print your brochure and turn it in to your teacher.
