HALF YEARLY EXAMINATIONS 2015/2016

A Fantastic Day

Bobby Jones is very poor. His father works two days a week in a baker’s in Brighton in the south of England. His mother is always ill and stays at home with Bobby’s two little sisters. There is never enough money in the house and all the money that Bobby’s father brings home goes on medicines for his mother and food for the family. Bobby is a good boy. He helps his mother in the house. He is also a good student at school and he studies very hard.

One day, he was walking home from school when he saw two one-pound coins on the pavement. He felt so lucky. He picked up all the coins and ran all the way to the baker’s shop and showed them to his father. His father was happy too.

‘The money is yours,’ his father said. ‘What are you going to do with it?’

‘Give me five chocolate cakes, please, Dad,’ Bobby said. ‘We can have them at dinner tonight.’ ‘You are a very good boy,’ his father said. ‘That’s one pound, please.’ Bobby took the cakes and started to walk home. ‘Now I’m going to buy a comic,’ he thought. ‘All my friends read comics, but I never have enough money to buy them. Oh, it’s a fantastic day!’

When he arrived at the newsagent’s, there was a very old man standing outside the shop. The man was blind and he had a metal cup in one hand and a white stick in the other. ‘Give me some money for food,’ he shouted at the air.

‘Give me some money.’ ‘Oh dear, what a poor man,’ Bobby thought. ‘He’s so old and he looks very hungry.’ Bobby looked at his one-pound coin and at the comics in the shop window. ‘Oh, never mind, I can buy a comic when I find some more money,’ and he put the coin in the metal cup. It made a metal sound as it hit the bottom of the cup. At that moment, a very elegant lady walked past the old man. She had a very strong and very sweet perfume on. ‘Thank you, madam,’ the old man said. ‘That’s very kind of you. Have a fantastic day.’
