PURPOSE

To establish guidelines in department uniforms, including Class “A”, work, station and turnout/protective clothing.

REQUIREMENTS

1. DRESS UNIFORM

1.1. Hat Fireman’s Pershing navy blue round style with black leather band with standard fire department silver badge and hatband buttons.

1.2. Shirt White dress shirt, long or short sleeve with pointed collar and open breast pocket and epaulets on the shoulders. Long sleeve shirt to have standard button cuff.

1.3. Coat Fireman’s navy blue, six button double breasted with peaked lapels and three small sleeve buttons. All buttons are to be silver “FD” style. Silver 3/8" lapel “MV” upper right lapel peak and “FD” upper left lapel peak. Letters are to be aligned horizontally. The Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department patch on the left sleeve shoulder ½" below seam and the Southern Maryland Volunteer Fireman’s Association patch on the right sleeve shoulder ½" below seam.

1.4. Tie The tie will be a standard width black tie. (Mans)

1.5. Pants Fireman’s navy blue, straight leg, uncuffed style.

1.6. Socks Any styles black in color.

1.7. Shoes The shoes will be black, plain toe oxfords without buckles, they will not be supplied by the fire department.

1.8. Belt The belt will be 1½" black leather with square chrome single pin buckle.

1.9. Gloves The gloves will be white poly/cotton style.

NOTE: The hash marks will be awarded for five years of service. Hash marks are to be 1 ½" x 3/16" gold embroidery style. Lowest mark to be 4" from end of sleeve. In cases where an individual has held the office of Fire Chief and has the Five Gold Stripes on their dress coat, gold stars will be utilized for years of service.

NOTE: Members who have held other office(s) may wear miniature badges indicating previous office(s) held on left side above coat badge. Length of service badges will be worn above name badge on right side.

2. ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER DRESS UNIFORM

2.1. President

Hat Standard hat with gold “PRESIDENT” badge and gold metal flexible expansion hatband with gold buttons.

Coat Standard coat with gold “FD” buttons and gold “MV-FD” letters and one gold band with red center stripe on each sleeve.

2.2. Past President

Hat Standard hat with gold “PAST PRESIDENT” badge and gold metal flexible expansion hatband with gold buttons.

Coat Standard coat with gold “FD” buttons and gold “MV-FD” letters and one gold band with red center stripe on each sleeve.

3. OPERATIONAL OFFICER DRESS UNIFORM

3.1. Chief

Hat Standard hat with gold “CHIEF” badge with 5-bugle center in place of standard center with gold metal flexible expansion hatband and gold buttons and gold scrambled eggs on brim.

Coat Standard coat with gold “FD” buttons and gold “MV-FD” letters. Gold 5 bugle 3/4" pins to be worn on the lower coat lapel peaks under “MV-FD” letters. Five Gold Stripes sewn on each sleeve. If the office of President was also held the bottom gold band will have a red center stripe.

3.2. Past Chief

Hat Standard hat with gold “PAST CHIEF” badge and gold metal flexible expansion hatband and gold buttons and gold scrambled eggs on the brim.

Coat Standard coat with gold “FD” buttons and gold “MV-FD” letters. Gold 5 bugle 3/4" pins to be worn on the lower coat lapel peaks under “MV-FD” letters. Five Gold Stripes sewn on each sleeve. If the office of President was also held the bottom band will have a red center stripe.

3.3. Assistant Chief

3.4. Deputy Chief

Hat Standard hat with gold “DEPUTY CHIEF” badge with 3 bugle center in place of the standard center with gold metal flexible expansion hat band and gold buttons.

Coat Standard coat with gold “FD” buttons and gold “MV-FD” letters. Gold 3 bugle 3/4" pins to be worn on the lower coat lapel peaks under “MV-FD” letters.

3.5. Captain

Hat Standard hat with silver “CAPTAIN” badge with 2 parallel bugle center in place of the standard center with a silver metal flexible expansion hatband and silver buttons.

Coat Standard coat with silver 2 parallel bugles round 3/4" pins to be worn on lower coat lapel under “MV-FD” letters and silver “FD” buttons.

3.6. Lieutenants

Hat Standard hat with silver “LIEUTENANT” badge with single bugle center in place of standard center with a silver metal flexible expansion hatband and silver buttons.

Coat Standard coat with silver single bugle round 3/4" pins to be worn on lower coat lapel peaks under “MV-FD” letters and silver “FD” buttons.

3.7 Sergeants

Hat Standard hat with silver “SERGEANTS” badge and silver metal flexible expansion hatband and silver buttons.

Coat Standard coat with silver chevrons round ¾” pins to be worn on lower coat lapel peaks under “MV-FD” letters and silver “FD” buttons.

EVERYTHING ELSE STANDARD

3.8. Engineer

Hat Standard hat with silver “ENGINEER” badge and silver metal flexible expansion hatband and silver buttons.

Coat Standard coat with silver round 3/4" pumper pins to be worn on lower coat lapel peaks under “MV-FD” letters and silver “FD” buttons.

EVERYTHING ELSE STANDARD

4. WORK UNIFORM

4.1. Shirt Light blue, short or long sleeves long sleeve to have standard button cuff, pocket flaps and shoulder epaulets. Silver badge worn over the left pocket. The Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department patch will be worn on the left shoulder ½" below shoulder seam. Silver 3/8" “MV-FD” letters worn on collar edge. Nametag to be worn over right pocket.

NOTE: Nametag is to be silver with black letters. The name to consist of first two initials and last name or first name, middle initial and last name.

May add Position and length of service riders.

4.2. Pants Navy blue, straight leg, uncuffed style.

4.3. Socks The socks will be black in color and any length.

4.4. Belt 1 ½" black leather belt with square chrome single pin buckle.

4.5. Shoes The shoes will be black, plain toe oxfords with no buckles and will not be supplied by the fire department.

5. WORK UNIFORM OPTIONS

5.1. Shirt On the right shoulder, members may wear the Southern Maryland Volunteer Fireman’s Association patch or the Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen Association Fire Prevention patch ½" below shoulder seam. Firefighters may also wear their length of service pins or any other fire service related pins above their name tag. Firefighters may, depending on the occasion, wear Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department t-shirts instead of the traditional work shirt.

7.7. Engineer

8. Turnout Gear Standards

8.1 Coat – 32” or 35" PBI Black or Gold, 7.5 oz. turnout coat manufactured to the specifications developed by the Mechanicsville V.F.D.

8.2 Pants - PBI Black or Gold, 7.5 oz. turnout pants manufactured to the specifications developed by the Mechanicsville V.F.D.

8.3 Suspenders – Globe GXtreme suspenders that are shipped as part of the ensemble. Red suspenders with 1" lime-yellow scotch light trim sewn to them as per specifications developed by the Mechanicsville V.F.D. as needed for the older style gear.

8.4 Boots - Boots shall be one of the following:

Rubber with a Nomex/Kevlar lining meeting NFPA standards.

Leather meeting NFPA standards (Warrington Pro,Servus,Ranger)

8.5 Gloves - Gloves shall be gauntlet style with coats that have wristlets. Coats that do not have wristlets shall have gloves with wristlets.

8.6 Hoods - Hoods will be made of one of the following materials and will be black or yellow: Nomex, P84, PBI and will be bib style. (Covers head, neck and top of shoulders)

8.7 Helmets

NOTE: St. Mary’s County Fireboard Association adopted a countywide

standard for helmet colors that went into effect on February 16, 1995.

A. Chief Officers - The helmets shall be white in color meeting a minimum of OSHA standards with the NFPA standard amount of scotchlight. (what the factory installed). Traditional style helmets will have white front pieces with the #2 (may substitute rank insignia in center instead of the #2) and have their rank on them as well.

B. Captains/Lieutenants - The helmets shall be red in color meeting a minimum of OSHA standards with the NFPA standard amount of scotchlight. Traditional style helmets will have a white or black front piece with red or blue panels, with the #2 to match, and white lettering. (may substitute rank insignia in center instead of the #2) and have their rank as well.

C. Safety Officer - The helmet shall be white in color meeting a minimum of OSHA standards with the NFPA standard amount of scotchlight. Traditional style helmets will have a white front piece with green panels, a green #2 and white lettering with their rank as well as the department name.

D. Water Supply Officer – The helmet shall be blue in color meeting a minimum of OSHA standards with the NFPA standard amount of scotchlight. Traditional style helmets will have a black front piece with blue panels, blue #2 and white lettering with their rank as well as the department name.

E. Firefighters - The helmets will be black in color meeting a minimum of OSHA standards with the NFPA standard amount of scotchlight. Traditional style helmets will have a black front piece with a minimum of at least their station number.

F. Probationary Firefighters - The helmets will be yellow in color meeting a minimum of OSHA standards with the NFPA standard amount of scotchlight. Traditional style helmets will have a yellow front piece with a minimum of at least their station number and the word “PROBATIONARY” on them.

G. Cadet Firefighters - The helmets will be orange in color meeting a minimum of OSHA standards with the NFPA standard amount of scotch light. The helmets will have the rank of “CADET” on them either on the front shield or identified by rank crescents on the side depending on the helmet style
