Axis: imaginary line through a spinning object. On Earth, the axis goes through the center from pole to pole.
Revolve (revolution): When an object follows an orbit around another object. The movement of the Earth around the sun is a revolution. It takes one year (365 1/4 days) for Earth to complete its revolution around the sun.
Rotate (rotation): The motion of a planet as it turns on its axis. It takes 24 hours for Earth to complete one rotation on its axis.
Orbit: The path of the moon around the Earth is the moon's orbit. The path of the Earth around the Sun is the Earth's orbit.
Earth's Seasons: caused by its revolution and the tilt of the axis. When the northern hemisphere is closest to the sun, it is summer in the northern hemisphere and winter in the southern hemisphere. When the southern hemisphere is closest to the sun, it is summer in the southern hemisphere and winter in the northern hemisphere. When there is no tilt, it is fall or spring.
Sun: The sun is the center of our solar system. It is a medium sized, yellow star that is the source of almost all energy in the solar system. It is made up completely of gases, and is the largest object in our solar system. The sun in about 110 times the size of Earth and is about 4.6 billion years old.
Moon's cycle of phases: it takes the moon about 28-29 days to go through its cycle of phases.
Phases Of The Moon: The different "shapes" of the moon are caused by the amount of reflected sunlight we see from Earth.
Waning: when our view of the light part of the moon is "getting smaller", with the light on the left.
Waxing: when our view of the light part of the moon is "getting larger", with the light on the right.
Know the Phases of the Moon:
Surface Conditions of the Earth, Moon and Sun: Earth - has liquid water and life. Moon - Lifeless and has a crater-like surface with dust. Sun - Made up of gases and gives off light. Earth, Moon and Sun System Diagram:
