Patron Saints of Catholic Schools, Teachers and Students

Did you know there are many people who are now saints that knew the importance of education, especially in a school that taught the Catholic faith? Read the short biographies, color the saint, and complete the crossword puzzle.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

Elizabeth Ann Seton was a wife and mother of five children. She learned about the Catholic faith when her husband was ill, and they were living in Italy. She eventually converted, and after her husband's death, established the first Catholic girls school in Maryland where she also established the first American congregation of religious sisters, the Sisters of Charity. She is the first canonized saint who was born in the United States. Because of her work with establishing schools, she is a Patron of Catholic schools. Her feast day is January 4. We ask St. Elizabeth to pray for the success of our Catholic schools.

Pope Saint Gregory the Great

Gregory was born to a wealthy family in Rome in troubled times when there was famine and plague as well as unrest among civil and Christian society in the 500's. He became a public servant to help guard against corruption. He entered a prayerful, monastic life and had seven monasteries built. Gregory repeatedly sought peace. For Gregory, true holiness lay in humility. He called himself "servant of the servants of God." Gregory was a writer and supporter of missionary work. He is a Patron Saint of teachers because of his work in teaching young monks about monastic life and sharing stories. He is responsible for sending St. Augustine to evangelize in a pagan England. Please pray with St. Gregory for teachers.

Patron Saints

St. John Neumann

Can you believe, too many priests? Early in his life, St. John Neumann knew he was called by God to be a priest. At that time, there were many priests in Europe. When his ordination in Europe was cancelled because the bishop became ill, he traveled to New York City to be ordained. He became the founder of the first diocesan Catholic School system when he was the fourth Bishop of Philadelphia. The Catholic schools grew from two schools to one hundred in his diocese as well as several hospitals and orphanages. He promoted devotion to the Eucharist. His feast day is January 23. Please join in praying with St. John Neumann for our principals and school leaders.

Saint ? YOU

You too, can be a patron saint of our Catholic schools. As you learn about how God's Divine presence is alive in our world, you become the hands, feet and mouth of God. That is how you become a saint, sharing God's word and helping your neighbor. Each day, live the Gospel message to be a Disciple of Christ.
