As the holiday season approaches, we'd like to take a moment to express our appreciation for your support of Nashville Public Radio this year. You make it possible for both WPLN and 91Classical to provide programming that inspires conversation and curiosity, educates, and entertains. We hope the following special programming adds to your holiday celebrations.

DECEMBER 2

DECEMBER 21

Candles Burning Brightly 7-8 p.m. on 91Classical Mindy Ratner hosts this celebration of Chanukah, the Jewish Festival of Lights. The show explores the meaning and traditions of Chanukah, including holiday foods and Sephardic and Ashkenazi music.

DECEMBER 4

All Is Bright 8-9 p.m. on 91Classical Lynne Warfel hosts an hour of beautiful, contemplative choral music that tells the traditional Christmas story with songs about angels, the star and manger scene. Featured artists include Cantus, Chanticleer, Cambridge Singers, Bryn Terfel, Emma Kirkby, Jessye Norman and a variety of choirs.

DECEMBER 6

A Choral Christmas with Stile Antico 8-9 p.m. on 91Classical Award-winning London choir Stile Antico pays a visit to St. Paul's Church on Harvard Square for a concert of radiant sacred music for the Christmas season by the most acclaimed composers of the renaissance.

DECEMBER 11

Christmas with Morehouse and Spelman Glee Clubs 8-9 p.m. on 91Classical One of the great holiday traditions in America, the choirs of Morehouse and Spelman Colleges--two of the most prestigious historically black institutions in the nation--get together to present a spine-tingling concert program mixing spirituals and carols. Korva Coleman hosts.

DECEMBER 13

Carols & Cheer 8-9 p.m. on 91Classical Host Scott Blankenship reviews his favorite carols this holiday season. Audiences are invited to sing along as he shares his top picks for the Christmas season, performed by leading artists and ensembles.

DECEMBER 18

A Chanticleer Christmas 8-9 p.m. on 91Classical Brian Newhouse hosts this one-hour program of a cappella holiday favorites, new and old, presented in concert by Chanticleer, the 12-man ensemble known as "an orchestra of voices."

DECEMBER 20

Hollywood Holiday 8-9 p.m. on 91Classical Join Lynne Warfel, hosts of APM's Saturday Cinema for a festive onehour musical retrospective of some of Hollywood's most cherished films inspired by Dickens' classic character, Ebeneezer Scrooge.

Paul Winter's Annual Winter Solstice Celebration 10 p.m.-midnight on 91Classical Celebrate the return of the sun with an encore performance of the 31st annual solstice celebration, recorded in the world's largest Gothic cathedral. Musicians include gospel singer Theresa Thomason, multi-instrumentalist Arto Tun?boyaciyan and double reed wizard Paul McCandless. Hear the American performance premiere of the Grammy-winning suite MIHO with The Paul Winter Consort and the thundering Cathedral Pipe Organ. WNYC's John Schaefer hosts.

DECEMBER 24

A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols 9-11 a.m. on 91Classical An annual and beloved Christmas tradition, A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is an extraordinary and memorable service broadcast live from the Chapel of King's College, Cambridge in England. This year's service will be the last for retiring music director Stephen Cleobury, who has conducted the chapel choir since 1982.

Christmas with the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra 11 a.m.-noon on 91Classical The 360-voice ensmble formerly known as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir continues its tradition of great artistry this holiday season with touching arrangements of familiar carols and lesser-known melodies that are fast becoming new classics. Julie Amacher hosts the concert which also features a 150-piece orchestra and 32-member bell choir.

St. Olaf Christmas Festival noon-2 p.m. on 91Classical This service in song and word has become one of the nation's most cherished holiday traditions. The festival includes hymns, carols, and choral works as well as orchestral selections celebrating the Nativity. More than 500 student musicians perform in five choirs with the St. Olaf Orchestra as Valerie Kahler hosts.

The Nashville Symphony's Messiah 8-10 p.m. on 91Classical It wouldn't be the holidays in Music City without the Nashville Symphony's annual performance of Handel's Messiah. On the night before Christmas, 91Classical's Nina Cardona hosts a broadcast of the 2017 concert of the classic oratorio, directed by celebrated opera conductor Gary Thor Wedow.

JANUARY 1

New Year's Day From Vienna 2019 10 a.m.-noon on 91Classical The Vienna Philharmonic presents its ever popular annual New Year's Day concert from the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna. You'll hear favorite waltzes, polkas and more--a festive start to the New Year.
