Newry Triathlon Club Junior Duathlon Race Saturday 23 June 2012

3 of our swimmers went to St. Mark’s High School, Warrenpoint, to compete in Newry Triathlon Club’s first junior Duathlon (run & cycle laps).

In the 10 – 11 year olds race Fergal McConvey paced himself well and finished strongly to come second in his age group.

The final race was the 8 – 9 year group and a strong bike performance by Daragh McConvey meant he came home first to win his age group. Ryan McCarron also had a great race and came home 4th in his group.

Leah McCarron has just joined our club this season – she had a go at the run and came away with a very good time for her age.

Well done to you all!!

Irish Division 1 Age Group Championships

Well done to Aine & Ciara Fitzpatrick and Hannah Gilsenan who travelled to Limerick University on 6 July to compete against Ireland’s top-flight swimmers in the Irish Division 1 Age Groups Championships.

This was their first competition in a long course pool and they swam brilliantly in this unfamiliar format to get some great PBs.

Big congratulations to Ciara on breaking the C group records for 100m and 200m backstroke and to Hannah for setting 2 new long course records for 200 breaststroke and the very long and arduous 400 Individual Medley.

Well done girls!!

ILDSA Whistledown Round the Rock Swim

Well done to Son & Mum team Fergal McConvey and Anne Duffy who took part in this sea swim on 21 July.

It was a cool, windy day with choppy conditions in the water on the 1500m course. With a phased start they both came in around the same time, with Anne just pipping Fergal to the finish line. At 11 years of age, Fergal was also the youngest competitor on the day. Fergal’s swim was a fantastic 30 minutes and Anne’s a very impressive 25 minutes.

Well done guys – we’ll see you in the Lake soon for more open water swimming!!

Beach Water Safety Week

Some of the Newry and Mourne club swimmers (listed below) took part in the “Beach Water Safety Week” held at Gyles Quay, from 16 July to 20 July.

This was a very enjoyable week where the children learned about various areas of safety both on and off the water.  First aid, water awareness and various ways of rescue were explored.  It was very evident that the swim skills of the children left them in a comfortable position in any water areas of the course.  Apart from the odd shower the weather was reasonable and by all accounts the water was warm.

This is a valuable asset for the children both from a personal safety point of view and also for work in the future.

Well done to all!!

Joe McKevitt completed Rescue 4

Huge congratulations to Laurence McGivern at the London 2012 Paralympics. He exceeded his own expectations and swam an amazing 2 second PB to qualify 6th fastest for the 100m backstroke final. He didn’t quite manage to improve on his brilliant heats time, but still had a great finals swim.

Fantastic stuff!!!
